In the northeast, he is a household name. In the rest of the country, he is not exactly unknown. Remember the haunting title song of Fiza and Jaane kya hoga rama re in Kaante? Most of the 30 albums that Zubeen Garg has made have been successes. His recent shift—from Guwahati to Mumbai—has only broadened the 32-year-old's canvas. Assamese film, Dinobandhu, in which he plays second lead and has composed music, will make it to the Indian Panorama of the international film festival in India next year. A project he is excited about is Strings, a Bollywood-made English film, in which he is music director.

"Music is in my blood. My mother and grandmother are singers and my father Kapil Thakur is a renowned poet," says Zubeen.

In 1992, he began singing. His first album, Anamika, in which he was lyricist, composer and singer, was with Kavita Krishnamurthy. It was a hit. He has since helped compose music for Asoka and Dil Se. Along with best buddy Debo Kumar, he set up N.K. Productions and made Assamese film Tumi Mor, Matr Mor; the romantic thriller had Zubeen as the star; the story, lyrics, music and direction were also by him. Today, he has one leg in Assam and the other in Mumbai. "I always wanted to do Hindi films because of the national reach," he says.

He is an unabashed admirer of R.D. Burman, Ilayaraja and Sting and is close to Bhupen Hazarika. Zubeen and his band have worked with almost 250 Assamese tribes, learning over 5,000 folk songs. "I intend to bring all that to Mumbai," he says. "They are my weapons and tools."

Zubeen croons another rocking number!

Tanuja Chandra's next directorial 'Zindaggi Rocks' starring Sushmita Sen and Shiney Ahuja is produced by B.A.G Films and has music by Anu Malik. As Sushmita plays a singer in the film, four songs featuring her have fallen in the kitty of Sunidhi Chauhan. Another song has been added now to the soundtrack to be rendered by Zubeen Garg and Tulsi Kumar. It is a fast and pappy number with lots of good rhythm, pace and energy. It is a groovy number with a mix of emotions and romance. Lyrics are by Mudassar Ali.

Well Zubin is fantastic in this film. I am a fan of him from a very long time. His music has a spiritual undertone. I think Assamese folk tune has a very unique quality. It goes very well with the film. It's just beautiful. My favorite song is called 'Om' but it has not come on air. It's by a very famous Hindu poet called Nagarjun. I think he has done a fantastic job. He is a rock star and also acted in the film.


Ya Ali takes UK by storm!
If you thought the music of Gangster was only topping charts in India, think again. Those in the UK think it's the best music in recent times too. Apparently, we are told the song Ya Ali has been topping music charts for consecutive weeks in the Queen's country. Singer Zubeen Garg can take a bow, as can music director Pritam. They've certainly created dhoom this time around!


Zybeen's Debuet as Film Producer in Hindi Films

Zubeen Garg is suddenly here, there and everywhere.
After ruling the music charts with Ya Ali and making his debut as a composer for the Bollywood production Strings, the Assamese youth icon is planning an autobiographical film in Hindi.
"The film will be about the challenges and struggles of a singer trying to establish himself in the cut-throat music industry. The film will include certain chapters from my own life. I was neither born with a silver spoon in my mouth, nor am I the son of a great singer or musician. I have had to struggle to establish myself in the music industry," Zubeen told The Telegraph from Mumbai.
The singer, who has cropped his trademark curly locks, is not exactly new to a film set. He directed, acted and composed the music for the Assamese film Tumi Mur, Matho Mur, which was moderately successful.
