Student of the Year: Are Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra the new John, Abhishek?

New Delhi: Shah Rukh Khan was already a big star in Bollywood but Karan Johar's 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' paved his way into the hearts of youngsters which eventually made him an actor acceptable to all classes and age groups. Not only SRK, Rani Mukerji and Kajol also carved a separate niche for themselves with 'KKHH'. Now, after 14 years, Karan Johar has returned with 'Student of the Year'.

'SOTY' also has three people at the helm of affair. Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra would not have asked for a better entry into Bollywood. The actors have come up with better performances than what is normally expected out of star-kids in their first film. The audience tends to think whether he is seeing three stars of the new generation?

'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' showed Rani as the second lead while 'SOTY' doesn't have any second lead. All three actors are lead actors and they have been given equal amount of time to perform on the screen. Varun Dhawan is equally the pick of actors but other two are also not bad. Sans some emotional scenes, Alia Bhatt has looked like her character and Siddharth represents what was intended for his character.

The basic premise is nothing different than what was revealed through the promos. It's true that these youngsters couldn't match the level of charisma of Kareena and Hrithik in 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' but those two had their own fan base till then.

On the other hand, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra look closer to John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan when it comes to their mannerism and poise. He has got more chances to prove his mettle in the film but he has grabbed the chance also. The school featured in the film needed someone who is a spoilt brat but has a good heart, Dhawan matches both the requirements. Isn't this something John Abraham did in 'Lakeer', 'Kaal' and 'Garam Masala'?

Similarly, Abhishek Bachchan is someone who can carry stylish roles without losing traditional values. Siddharth Malhotra is sober but hard willed, and comes from a relatively humble background. His persona in the film will remind you of Abhishek Bachchan's 'Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya', 'Kuch Naa Kaho' and 'Bluffmaster'.

Commercial success and acceptance among the audiences are two separate things. John and Abhishek might not have huge hits in their credit but they can easily feature among the prominent actors of their age group. Similarly, Varun and Siddharth have the capability of striking a common cord with urban audiences. Varun in particular has showcased a range of emotions and his apparent vulnerability is likely to make him endear to his female friends.

It's just a matter of good selection of films and these two will also emerge as the new generation stars in due course of time.
