Valli is the Ichcha Shakti of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya) & Deviyanai (Devasena) is the Kriya Shakti & Vel embodies Gnana Shakti (power of knowledge).In her previous birth Valli & her sibling Deviyanai (another consort of Lord Murugan) were the daughters of Lord Vishnu & both of them undertook several penance to became the consorts of Lord Murugan, who appeared before them & gave them the boon of the marriage in their next birth. And in the present birth, the Goddess was destined to marry the God of Mountains, Lord Murugan. Sage Narada, at a tender informed her father that she was an intimate Shakti of Lord Subramanya incarnated for the fullfillment of lod's leela.
Goddess Valli had her heart & soul to lord & always pray with fervent devotion & love to be with him. The lord was moved by highers expression of love expressed by the princess & so he planned to appeased her. The mountain cheif planned planned to develop a field for growing millets & assigned Valli to take in charge of protecting fields from birds & animals who might devour the crops. Lord Murugan saw this an opportunity to meet the Goddess & therfore he assumed the form of handsome tribal hunter & appeared before her as if he lost his way on chasing a deer while hunting. Valli did not recognize the stranger & promptly asked him tp leave the place. The hunter was about to leave & at that the moment the chief was returning to the place by bringing honey & fruits for Valli, the God in order to avoid being caught turned himself into a tree. After the chief & his followers left the place, the God changed back into the hunter form & proposed to Valli. The princess who had her heart only for the God was angry at the proposal & lashed out the hunter.The chief & his followers were again so the hunter changed himself into an old man. The old man was hungry & asked Valli for food & she gave him a mixture of millet flour & honey, that made him thirsty for water & asked for water. She provided him with water to which the lord jokingly remarked that she has satisfied his thirst &she can quench her thirst for a companion. the Goddess was anger again & stated to leave the place, the lord requested his brother Lord Ganesha for his help. Lord Ganesha appeared as a wild elephant. On seeing the elephant Srimati Valli ran back to the old man pleading to save her from the elephant. Lord Muruga proposes to save her only if She agrees to marry him.In the heat of moment, she agrees & Lord reveals his true form. It was then Valli realizes that it was her beloved Lord, who was with her all the time. After the harvest was over, the chief with his daughter & entourage returned to their native land. The lord again returned for his devotees & the Divine Couple enjoyed love sports away from Srimati Valli family. Nambi raja on being alerted about Valli absence flew in to rage & went in search for her.When they finally found Lord with Valli the chief & followers shot arrows at him but they all failed to the lord & instead the chief sons fell ill. Goddess Valli was sad to see the lifeless bodies & requested the Lord to bring them back to life back. Lord Murugan requested her to touch the bodies & by her mere touch everybody was brought back to life.The chief & his followers realised that it was their God of Mountains, in the form of old man & prayed to him. Lord Murugan came ti his true form & blessed the tribesmen & the chief conducted the marriage of his daughter Valli & the Lord. This place came to be known as"Vallimalai" the place where the couple spent their time. It is located in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
