Made with a rather small budget, Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra film Barfi's box office collections are catching fast with Ek Tha Tiger. But Oscar nomination is certainly going to give it a longer run in multiplexes across the country.
UTV Motion Pictures must be over the moon with the stupendous success of their latest film Barfi. The film has already collected around Rs 75 crore and the way things are developing for it, a Rs 100 crore target by the end of this week is not impossible. So while Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra collect laurels from both critics and film buffs, producers mint money by the enthusiasm it has generated.
Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor were not really expecting such remarkable performance of their film at the box office. But the film is not just turning out to be a money minting movie, it is also attracting critical acclaim as great film. This is the reason that it has been nominated as India's entry into the Oscars.
So far the film's box office collection is around Rs 75 crore in the ten days following its launch in multiplexes across the world. It is not a Rs 100 crore films like Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger. Ek Tha Tiger collected around R 250 crore rupees at the box office.
Meanwhile Award winning actress Priyanka Chopra, whose latest film "Barfi!" will be India's official entry at the Oscars, is overwhelmed by the news and says the film was a labour of love and it was amazing to be a part of it.
"Yay! Congratulations Team Barfi! This is such amazing news. This film was a labour of love for all of us and to see it receive such amazing success is so gratifying. This has been the toughest character of my life and to see everyone loving Jhilmil is such a dream come true. I am thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful team who made this happen," Priyanka said in an statement.
Currently in Los Angeles to complete work on her international music album, Priyanka plays an autistic girl named Jhilmil opposite Ranbir Kapoor in the Anurag Basu-directed "Barfi", which was released Sep 14.
Film Federation of India (FFI) sends some critically acclaimed and highly appreciated films from the country to the jury of the Academy Awards.
While many films including "Paan Singh Tomar", "Kahaani" among others were shortlisted by the jury members but "Barfi!" has been selected to represent India in the Best Foreign Language Film category to compete with the entries from the other foreign countries.
So far, only three Bollywood films – Mehboob Khan's "Mother India" (1957), Mira Nair's "Salaam Bombay" (1988) and Ashutosh Gowariker's "Lagaan" (2001) – have made it to the nomination stage.
Even as the industry speculates if it can break the record of India's top-grossing Bollywood movie ever, the romantic action thriller from Yash Raj Films has already added yet another feather in its cap. According to the latest Global Video Insights (GVI) report published by Vuclip, the world #1 independent mobile video company, the historic blockbuster has become the longest standing movie to be featured in the most viewed list on mobile devices in India.
Elaborating on the record, Bollywood Bhai's namesake, and Vuclip's Vice President, Business Development - APAC & MEA, Salman Hussain, says, "For the fourth month in a row, Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger has been featured among both the most watched video clips as well as the most searched video terms by more than 14 million users of Vuclip in India, making it the longest running top movie title on mobile phones in the country. The Ek Tha Tiger fever shows no signs of subsiding yet among Indian mobile phone users, having been featured in the top ten in our GVI reports for June, July, August and now September. Never have we seen any movie being such a big hit for such a long time. In the last four months, the movie appeared as many as ten times in the Top Ten Most Viewed category, as well as grabbed a rank in the Top Ten Most Searched category each month."
Among these top ten ranks, Ek Tha Tiger was the #1 search term in August and September, while it grabbed the numero unotitle of the most watched video clip in the months of June and August.
The season is proving to be successful for not just the movie, but also for the mobile video service, Vuclip, which was featured among the top ten most accessed domains in India, according to the latest edition of State of the Mobile Web report released on August 31 by the browser company, Opera Software, based on an analysis of over 205 million users worldwide.
Says Salman Hussain, "With reports of possible Tamil and Telugu remakes of the movie, Ek Tha Tiger still seems to have a lot to offer to its fans, and I won't be surprised if it grabs the top slot yet again on mobile too, which is fast becoming the screen of choice for personalized viewing of video content. Besides over 900 million mobile phone subscribers in India, Frost & Sullivan predicts that there are still another 650 million users that are still untapped, which presents a huge and growing addressable market. It's no wonder that movie producers are increasingly looking at promoting their video clips on mobile to reach out to their fans in every nook and corner of the country."

Ek Tha Tiger made a staggering 1.20 Crores in it's 5th week at the box office. The movie which now stands at a domestic box office collection of197.63 Crores, is off most of the screens.
The Salman Khan and Katrina Kaifstarrer has also made another 54.50 Crores oversease which brings up the worldwide total of the flick to 252.13 Crores.
Ek Tha Tiger will no longer enjoy any screen space in the 6th week. The movie's run is basically over and the returns are undoubtedly nothing less than huge.
However, the movie could not beat the box office collection of 3 Idiots which is still the highest grossing Bollywood movie ever. Let's see it Dabangg 2 can achieve what Ek Tha Tiger couldn't.
