----------------------------------------------

"Maan when are you coming home" Geet called Maan and asked him the same question the sixth time now. Momentarily shutting his eyes, he sighed as he patiently replied, "Geet, I have a meeting in an hour. Three hours… I promise it won't take longer" he said it in a voice filled with adoration and a hint of regret for not being there beside her at a time like this. Lately, his wife's hormones seemed to be all over the place. One moment she was laughing, the other she was crying… one moment she was yelling at him the other she was showering him with her love. No he was not feeling, it was only making him more concerned for her well-being. "You know I feel the baby is eager to meet us now" she said, as she stood in front of the mirror and gently caressed her full blown pregnant nine-month belly. "Let him know that mummy and daddy are no less excited" he said softly. "I'll convey it to HER" she said stressing on the 'her' and he chuckled, "We'll see that". She frowned at his confident tone as if it was not she who was carrying the baby but him! But then one look back at the mirror and a frown caressed her features again. "I'm scared" she said meekly.  Maan pursed his lips tight knowing well how terrified she is of her approaching labour. "What! Scared and My Mishti!! Are you sure?" he tried to ease her fears by pulling her leg, but truth be told, he was a nervous wreck himself. Damn the corporators, who insisted to get this meeting done today, he cursed them under his breath. But when he heard no retort, he spoke softly in an assuring voice, "It's all going to be fine Geet. I'm there beside you every moment". His comforting voice managed to get a smile back on her lips. And he knew, it was time to cheer her up, "In the meantime, to keep yourself distracted why don't you go back to drool over that guy… what's the name of that guy from your favorite television soap? Oh yes, Gurmeet!" He teased her. "Maan!" she whined and he sniggered before once again assuring her that he'll try to be home as soon as possible.

Geet placed the phone on the table. She smiled as she looked at her and Maan's wedding picture and then patted her belly gently as if to assure the baby of her love and care. Their baby was their miracle, the symbol of their love… a tiny being that was coming to complete them and their relationship.

It had been four years since their marriage and they were expecting their first kid yet it all seemed like yesterday to her. In Maan she had got everything that a girl wants for in a husband and more. No, theirs had not been a love marriage... at least not as far as she was concerned. It had been a match set up by the families. Their courtship period had been merely 2 months and they had not once dated before their wedding. It was only after she came to Delhi, after the marriage did they gradually open up and explore more of each other's personalities. In their journey together, they had started from being friends to companions to partners to lovers and now – to parents. A sense of pride filled her and she caressed her belly lovingly again before she opened her almirah and brought out her treasured photo albums that had captured various moments of their togetherness.

Orey manva tu to bavra hai
Tu hi jaane tu kya sochta hai
Tu hi jaane tu kya sochta hai bavre
Kyun dikhaye sapne tu sote jaagte

Jo barse sapne boond boond
Nainon ko moond moond
(Nainon ko moond moond)
Jo barse sapne boond boond
Nainon ko moond moond
Kaise main chaloon, dekh na sakoon
Anjaane raastein

(chorous)
Gunjasa hai koi iktara iktara, gunjasa hai koi iktara
Gunjasa hai koi iktara iktara, gunjasa hai koi iktara
Dheeme bole koi iktara iktara, dheeme bole koi iktara
Gunjasa hai koi iktara iktara, gunjasa hai koi iktara

While she waited for him, she softly brushed her hand over the names engraved on the album cover, Memoirs – Maan Singh Khurana Weds Geet Handa… What better way for her to get herself distracted than to relive the memories that brought her alive… She looked at Maan's picture and kissed it gently, as she remembered the day he had come by to whisk her away….

"Urghh Not again!" Geet groaned and slumped on the bed holding her head in her hands. "Di ab kya karenge?" Asked Rajji as she paced back and forth in front of Geet while Pari put a comforting arm around Geet's shoulder. "Karenge kya? usse bhi bhaga denge" replied a confident Titto and hi-fived a grinning Pari who added, "That would make a perfect score of 10". Geet beamed at them as she smiled evilly, "Hmphh… bechara… aane do… aisi halat karenge ki agle baar Amritsar ki taraf mud ke bhi nahi dekhega" said that she extended her hand and one by one everyone placed their hand on hers forming a pact while all of them had evil grins plastered on their faces.

In the evening, everyone in the Handa Haveli was getting ready to welcome the special guests who were arriving from Delhi. Daarji, the patriarch of the house and Teji, his eldest grandchild had gone to receive the guests while Daarji's sons, Mohinder and Brij were anxiously waiting in the verandah waiting for their arrival. Inside the house, "Arre yeh phool bhi theek se nahi lagaye" Rano fretted as she started arranging the flowers in the vase. "Mummy ji, woh door se aayenge toh unhe bhookh lagi hogi na, main thode pakode bana leti hoon" said Pammi, Teji's wife. "Haan theek hai" Rano smiled at her daughter-in-law.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Kya khabar laye ho" Geet asked haughtily lazing around in Darji's chair in the backyard of the house when she saw Titto walking in. "zor shor se swagat ki taiyaariyan ho rahi hai Di" he said in a hushed whisper as if sharing a great national secret. "Di… main toh kehti hoon unke aate hi na, unke peeche pagal kutte chod dete hain" Pari said quite pleased with her idea. "Khabardaar!" a voice thundered from behind alerting the gang and Pari gulped when she saw Preeto, her mother standing on the door holding a belan in her hand. "Maine na teri taange tod deni hai" Preeto glared at her daughter and then passed a warning glare at all of them, "Kaan khol ke sun lo tum sab, agar is baar koi bhi shararat ki na toh maine tum sab ko pankhe se ulta taang dena hai" Looking at each of them to ensure that her threat that hit the targets she then turned and made her way back into the house. Geet, Titto and Pari looked at each other in disappointment and dismay. But then Titto's eyes gleamed with mischief as he spoke, "Koi baat nahi Di… pagal kutto wala idea chala gaya toh kya aur bhi toh tareeke hain na usse bhagane ke" He raised his eye brows while the girls grinned back before Rajji came running and panted before she broke the news, "Di woh mehmaan aa gaye". Despite having her gang with her, Geet grimaced while Pari pursed her lips for a moment in determination before she announced, "Ok guys… mission Geet Di ka dulha No. 10 bhagao aaj se shuru". The young Handa gang looked at the door leading to the living room area with an indomitable look while Geet muttered, "Whoever you are mister, you are so going to regret coming here"

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Geet was Rano and Mohinder's daughter and Daarji's muse. While Teji and Rajji were her siblings, Pari and Titto were Brij and Preeto's kids and her cousins. Based in Amritsar, Handas had always stayed together. Mohinder and Brij had been inseparable and so had been their kids. Their family was not the one who withheld their daughters in the confines of the house and so the girls were opened up to equal opportunities like the boys.  While Teji always played a role of strict eldest brother keeping an eye on all the youngsters, it was Geet who spread liveliness in the house. She was the head of the small gang and was always upto some mischief or the other. But Daarji's obdurate backing to all her waywardness, paved an easy escape route for her all the time. And it had been like this for her, ever since she remembered. So when first time the talks of her marriage broke into the house, she had been alarmed, scared to leave her territory and since then had succeeded in shooing away 9 potential suitors from their home with the help of her small gang. Whenever it happened, everyone would expect Daarji would loose his patience with her but much to everyone's surprise Daarji would simply shrug his shoulders and laugh it off saying, "Bachchi hai… hum iske liye isse bhi achcha ladka dhund ke layenge"

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Jo bhi karna hai, aaj raat ko hi karna hoga" Geet told the gang who were now clustered together in her room, in a conspiratorial whisper. "Di, main ready hoon" whispered Titto back. "Di, main ek suggestion doon" Rajji said unsure. Geet squinted her eyes at her sister knowing exactly well what was coming from her, after all wasn't Rajji the most humble, polite and obedient Handa kid? "Bol" she said. "Woh… mumma keh rahi thi… ki woh… log… bohut a..ache hai aur…" she trailed back when she saw the rest of the three people glaring at her. "Tera dimag toh theek hai na" Titto chided her. "Aur nahi toh kya? You know, those guys are from Delhi… agar shaadi ho gayi… toh Geet Di ko bhi Delhi jaana padega" Pari frowned. "Haan… aur main kahin nahi jaane wali… agar tu interested hai, toh Mumma ko kehti hoon meri jagah teri baat karde" Geet said annoyed and Rajji fell back making a baby face. "Haan… toh main kya keh rahi thi…" Geet said turning to the others but before she could continue Rano walked into the room and eyed the devils of her house. Rolling her eyes she asked them to leave and warned them to behave themselves while she had a word with her daughter. Rajji, Pari and Titto reluctantly left the room.

"Dekh Geet, ek baar mil ne main kya problem hai? Nahi pasand aaye toh na keh dena" Rano explained as she looked at her daughter sitting crossly. "Jab mujhe shaadi hi nahi karni, toh kyun miloon?" she retorted back. Rano sighed before she continued in a stern voice, "Dekh… that's enough now! You better prepare yourself… kyunki Daarji ne kaha hai ki tu kal subah us ladke se milegi. Unki Dadi Ma bhi saath hai… main nahi chahti ki tu koi bhi shararat kare. Samajh gayi tu?" Rano firmly made her point and left the room, leaving behind a sulking Geet.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

It was an hour past the midnight. The house was pitch dark and everyone was fast asleep except the plotters who were waiting for the right moment to put their plan into action. "Subah mil le na…" Geet scoffed as she remembered her mother's warnings. "Subah tak woh yahan rahenge toh main unse milungi na" Geet thought and a smiled in conviction before she looked at the clock again. It was 10 minutes past 1. "Titto… All the best" Geet encouraged as Titto and Pari wrapped a white bed sheet covering them from head to toe and held a torch light below their chins to give them a ghostly appearance. "Dhyan se jaana" Rajji said scared as she looked uncomfortably from here to there. "Oye, hum apne hi ghar pe hain… jung pe nahi ja rahe" Pari rolled her eyes while Rajji held Geet's arm firmly. To add the extra effects, Geet placed a stepping stool just outside the window of the guest room that opened in the corridor and placed a table fan on it.

Pari and Titto entered the room, all prepared to scare the guy who had come to meet their Geet Di… better put, the guy who had come to take their sister away from them. They moved towards the bed silently and gave each other a thumbs up when they saw a sleeping figure on the bed. This was fun, thought Titto. How many times, they had tried this trick and it has always worked. How people could be so dumb, he thought but then the grogginess and catching them off guard played the major part in it, he knew that. So carefully walking up to the bed, they switched on the torch lights, that highlighted their facial expressions spookily and then slipped the cover off of the man's face. As Titto pulled the covers down, Pari began to call out to him in an eerie voice but stopped short when she realized that there was no one under the covers. Titto and Pari looked at each other in confusion and pulled the covers off only to see pillows lined up to make a false impression of a sleeping form on the bed. They looked at each other perplexed when someone tapped on Titto's shoulder causing him to gasp. Titto held Pari's hand and whispered, "Di, peeche koi hai" Pari frowned, "Arre yahan aage (pointing at the bed) koi nahi hai, tujhe peeche ki fikar hai" and the next moment, the hand was on Pari's shoulder causing her to widen her eyes. They looked at each other in horror as they comprehended the problem at hand but then a voice cut through the silence, "Mujhe pata tha, tum log aisa hi kuch karoge" He said as he pressed his hand on the both Pari's and Titto's shoulder making Titto jump in horror while Pari shrieked, "Aaahhh" but a hand quickly shut her up warning her to stay quiet. Scared, they cautiously turned to look at the man behind them and slightly tilted their torches to see the face of the man who had managed to terrorize the devils of the Handa Haveli. Pari's eyes widened, "Dreamy you!" she exclaimed.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Itni der ho gayi… ab tak yeh log aaye nahi" Geet said standing at a distance while she restlessly fidgeted with her dupata. "Di, koi gadbad toh nahi hogi na" Rajji was tapping her foor incessantly. "Shubh shubh bol Rajji… Babaji please madat karna" Geet prayed.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Maan! Maan Singh Khurana!" he corrected, muffling a chuckle while he tried to keep his face straight. "So as I was saying, I knew you were going to do this. I was waiting for you guys infact" he said in nonchalance. "Wait… waiting for us?" Tito asked eyeing Maan. "Haan… ab koi mere kamre main aaye, toh, wouldn't it be rude if I keep sleeping" Maan asked while Pari gave him a dubious look. "Waise, I think it's so mean of us to not include your family in our fun… nahi?" he asked as if serious while Titto and Pari looked at each other alarmed. "Wait let me call them" Maan said and turned to the door, hiding his smile. "Noo!" Titto lurched forward. "Please… kisi ko mat bulana" he requested terrified now. "Haan please… warna meri mom toh mujhe pankhe se ulta taang ne se pehle ek baar bhi nahi sochengi" Pari joined her hands to stop him. Maan looked at them both and said thoughtfully, "Lekin tum dono ne mujhe abhi tak nahi bataya, ki tum dono yahan aaye kyun the?" he turned to look at them again. Pari bit her lip while Titto raced his mind up to come with an alibi, "Haan… woh… aap… aapse milne aaye the" he said suddenly. "Haan milne aaye the" Pari echoed. "Milne aaye the?" Maan glared at them and added, "Milne aaye the ya dara ke bhagane aaye the?" he pointed at their attire. "Err… woh… haan… hum, hum toh mazak kar rahe the" pari chimed in "Mazak?" Maan raised his eyebrows and finally Pari and Titto slumped their shoulders in defeat. "Fine, hum aapko bhagane aaye the" Titto accepted and looked at him in defiance. "Kyun?" he asked. "You plan to take our Di away" Pari answered and turned to look away.

Not able to hide his amusement any longer, Maan chuckled and shook his head, "trust me kiddos… try as much as you wish… I'm going to take your Di away. And don't forget I know what you guys have done so beware" said that Maan opened the door of the room for them while pari and Titto gaped at him. "You are blackmailing us?" Titto spat. Maan shrugged and yawned before he said, "Good Night kids. Now LEAVE!" Pari and Titto walked out of the room dejected while Maan laughed before he slumped on to his bed thinking about what had happened. He knew he was not their first target, there were others who had fallen victims to their monkey business before. But then, he was extremely pleased that they had managed to keep those other guys, who had come to seek Geet's hand in marriage, at a bay. His thoughts went back to the time when he had come to the Handa Haveli with his friend Dev.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Dev was a Canada based businessman whose family was settled in Delhi. His family wanted to get him married to a suitable girl and it was then that someone had suggested Geet's name. Dev was extremely apprehensive about getting married to a small town girl. He already had his biased judgment clouding his thoughts when he agreed to meet Geet for the sake of his family. However, he had cajoled Maan to accompany him here to meet Geet and despite his numerous requests and excuses he couldn't find a way out of it. So it was then that Maan had come to Handa Haveli for the first time and had met Geet. Though he would hate to admit it, he did sense his heart flutter at the sight of her. However, then owing to the circumstances, he pushed his thoughts back, not thinking much about it.

What unfolded in the next couple of days was unbelievably hilarious, bizarre and entertaining to say the least. Since even then they were travelling from Delhi, they were going to stay over with the Handas. He was tired and fell asleep soon after he laid on the bed in the room allotted to him. However, couple of hours later, his sleep was rudely disrupted with the loud banging on his door. At first he was baffled to see a terrified Dev standing at his door. He was sweating profusely when he narrated Maan about the hauntings in his room. Maan laughed out aloud attributing it to a nightmare Dev must have seen in his sleep. Dev's ordeal didn't end there. Titto had played another of his cards when he ushered Dev with him alone on the pretext of showing him the farms. When they returned, Dev was drenched and shivering. Apparently, Titto had told him that there was no water in the house and if needed to take bath he could bathe in the pond that they came across. The haughty Dev had stepped into chilling waters of the pond and had returned home drenched. If that was not all, it was later they found out the pond was not meant for humans but for giving bath to the cattle. Aghast, Dev ran into the washroom and had spent two hours to clean himself and ward off the stinking smell of the cattle off of him. Maan couldn't help but laugh when he remembered how Pari had coaxed him to sleep on the terrace where the entire night, mosquitoes had feasted on his blood.

The final bomb was dropped by Geet herself. When Geet and Dev were left alone to have a dialogue, Geet's behavior had scared poor Dev off. Throwing away all of her table manners out of the window, Geet was at her best when she started sipping her tea so noisily that poor Dev gaped at her forgetting he was himself holding a tea mug in hand. While she grinned like a fool staring at Dev, he had no clue what he was supposed to say or ask. "Tum kahan tak padi ho" he finally managed to ask her the most basic question. "Oye ji… itna toh padi hoon ki apni phamily nu chithi toh likh hi loongi" she said proudly showing off all her teeth. "Ji?" he asked her perplexed. "Haan ji… Canada jaake yahan sabko letter shatter toh likhungi na unko batane ko ki, I doing phine." Dev gulped hard at her reply. "aapke friends honge yahan" he said. "Haan. Main Canada jaake unke saath mating bohut miss karungi" she replied feigning remorse and dev spat out his tea, "WHAT!" he almost yelled. "Haan… milna julna toh roz ho nahi payega na" she added this with a sigh while she tried hard to control her laugh. "Oh… you mean you'll miss meeting them" he said as he sighed in relief. "Haan haan… wohi… Maa kehti hai ki shaadi ke baad husband sabse first… toh aap se zyada aur koi kaise impotent ho sakta hai" she said eyeing him as if she was head over heels for him. "Impotent!" he exclaimed incredulously while she looked at him with confusion, "Haan sabse zyada zaroori… tch tch tch… Canada main reh ke itni angrezi bhi nahi seekhi" she said and shook her head in disappointment. But that was all for Dev. He excused him and left her alone while she did her little happy dance to celebrate the success of her plan.

Dev came straight to Maan's room eager to run away from the place as fast as his legs could carry. When Maan coaxed him, he narrated the whole episode to Maan who was perplexed nonetheless. He asked Dev to pack his bags while he proceeded with his. Meanwhile, he had to make an urgent call and since the reception was weak in his room, he stepped out to make the call. Once he was done, he turned back to his room and it was then that a laughter caught his attention. Curious, when he stepped towards the backyard, he saw Geet, Rajji, Pari and Tito sitting there and having a gala time at Dev's expense. It didn't take him long to discover that it was all her plan. As he fitted the puzzle, he couldn't help but laugh himself and wondered how Dev could be so stupid to fall to such dim-witted childish tricks. From the corner, he watched her animatedly talking to her siblings and mimicking Dev, before she fell into another bout of laughter. Wasn't she cute? He knew he should be angry but strangely he was not. Her mirth was contagious.

But then he rushed to Dev to explain things to him, but Dev refused to listen to Maan. Sighing, Maan left the house but could not forget the adorable looks and innocent tricks that made him smile everytime he thought about her. When his Dadi Ma, Savitri Devi, noticed it, he first tried to shrug it off but then succumbed to Dadi Ma's insistent persuasion. Understanding the matter, Savitri Devi quickly got things arranged and spoke to Handa's proposing for Maan's marriage with Geet. And so here he was… with his Dadi Ma… back at Handa haveli… determined to make the girl, who had managed to capture his heart effortlessly, his! He shut his eyes, blocking out everything else but her beautiful face from his thoughts.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"What do you mean he knew?" Geet snapped her head in pari and Titto's direction who cowered at her dominating stance. They knew their Geet Di, she had no patience or tolerance towards the failed plans! And this was anyways a grave situation which she was desperate to escape from. "Di, he's smart" said Pari with a wistful look in her eyes only to earn a smack for her Di in return. "Smart my foot! Mujhe lagta hai meri saari training tum logon pe waste ja rahi hai… ek bande ko bhaga nahi paaye" she glowered at them. "Di… lekin humari baat toh suno" Titto pleaded. But Geet turned away, "Nahi Sun ni… tum logon ki wajah se ab kal subah mujhe us nikamme se milna padega" she rued. "But Di aap us se already mil chuke ho" Titto said. Geet turned to him, "Matlab?" she asked eyeing them uncertainly. "Di! Woh… wohi hai… dreamy" Pari said with an excited smile. Geet frowned, "Who dreamy?" she asked in confusion. It was then that Pari told him about Maan. Geet shut her eyes and flopped on the bed again wondering what did she ever do to land into this situation. As Titto and Pari told her about what had happened Geet remembered the first time she had met this man.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Dev, the NRI guy who had come to see her was accompanied by this friend of his. At first instance, Geet had thought Maan was the proposed guy but then it had turned out to  be Dev. And she was a bit disappointed to know that as undoubtedly Maan was much more handsome, gorgeous and intelligent than that dim-witted friend of his. No… not that she was considering to give him a chance, its just that it would have been more flattering if the guy would have been Maan. From the little they talked, Geet was quick to realize that Maan was witty and smart. And when they were leaving, didn't she see Maan eyeing her with a smirk while his eyes had the look which gleamed with familiarity… It was as if he knew… he knew what they had done with Dev. Geet remembered looking away in embarrassment when he wished her luck for her future. But never in her dreams had she ever though that he would come back for her. And it was precisely at this moment she knew that she was trapped! The predator had turned into a prey! Grunting, she hid her head in the pillow making futile attempts to sleep.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

The sun was much above the horizon when Maan woke up. Freshening up, he walked out of the room and looked around to catch a glimpse of Geet. But instead was met by Rano who guided him into the dining room. His dadi ma was already seated on the table and they had a general conversation over the breakfast. All this while, Geet was missing and Maan's eyes searched for her. Daarji smiled and excused himself as he went towards Geet's room.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Mujhe nahi aana neeche" Geet stomped her foot on the ground as Preeto and Rano tried to coax her into meeting the guests. "Puttar ek baar mil toh le" Rano pleaded but sitting on the bed, Geet hugged the pillow tight and vigorously shook her head in denial. "Achcha baba… chal ke breakfast hi kar le… maine tere pasand ke paranthe banaye hain" Preeto tried. But Geet shook her head again. Rano sighed, "Dekh Geet tu..." she started but was cut off when Daarji's voice came in, "Kyun pareshaan kar rahe ho meri Geet ko… ki hoya Puttar?" he asked in an affectionate tone. "Daarji… mujhe kisi se nahi milna" Geet whimpered almost in tears now. Taking long strides Daarji came to sit in front of Geet, "Arre toh is main rone wali kaunsi baat hai?" he asked running a hand over her head in assurance. "Phir aap zidd nahi karenge na" Geet asked cutely. Daarji smiled at her and said, "Puttar, aaj tak kabhi aisa hua hai ki teri koi baat hum ne na maani ho?" he asked and waited for Geet to respond. Geet shook her head for a no and then he continued, "Toh phir? Lekin meri Geet, kuch bahar ke logon ke wajah se apne kamre main darr ke chup ke baith ti achchi lagti hai?" he tried to prompt her. "Main nahi darti kisi se" Geet at once asserted. "Toh phir neeche aane se mana kyun kar rahi hai… arre nahi karni shaadi toh na kar… mehmaan hai, do din ke liye aaye hain, chale jayenge" he reasoned as casually as he could. Geet smiled instantly and agreed to come downstairs. Rano, Preeto and Daarji smiled as Geet shut the washroom door to get ready.

It was not like Daarji was not aware of the dealings of his grandchildren. He was… and as far as Geet was concerned he knew her like the back of his hand. He knew how to pursue her… he knew how to get around her… and so he knew exactly what qualities he was seeking in the guy he would give his Geet to in marriage. All the guys who were driven out by the kids, no one held Daarji's eyes for even a second. He knew Geet was a full of life, lively girl and the thought that someone would want to change that about her was unacceptable to him. But when Maan's Dadi Ma called him, he was initially surprised and then reluctant. He didn't know if it would be the right decision but then he had met Maan and didn't Maan know about Geet's juvenile manners… he did… ofcourse he did, he had seen it… and that only meant one thing that here was a guy who would cherish the innocence and dynamic nature of his granddaughter just like he did. Oh how could he not give Maan a chance? And so he had consented for them to come over. The more he spoke to Maan, the more he realized how mature and responsible man Maan was. And if that was not all, he didn't miss the spark in his searching eyes whenever they spoke about Geet. And he knew, Maan was the right choice for Geet and intuitively knew this was going to work.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Around 15 minutes later, Geet was sitting amidst her family on the dining table. As Pammi served her, Savitri Devi tried making a brief conversation with her to which she courteously replied. The old lady was certainly impressed with her humility. Geet kept nibbling on her paranthans, too conscious of the pair of eyes that refused to budge away from her. "Yeh kahin aur nahi dekh sakta kya" she muttered under her breath only to receive a nudge from Preeto who was sitting beside her. Though nerved, Geet continued to avoid him through the breakfast and politely excused herself once she was done.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

The morning and afternoon rolled on with Maan dying to have a word with her but everytime he tried he found himself stuck with one or the other member of the household. Dadi Ma too was having a lovely time at the Haveli. It was late in the afternoon when Daarji left to take a small nap and asked him to do the same, leaving him alone for the first time since he had come here. He was hoping to get his chance when he saw Titto walking down the corridor. "Titto" he called. Titto stopped in his tracks and turned to give him a skeptical look. Maan smiled at the 12 year old and asked directly, "Geet kahan hai?" Titto narrowed his eyes at him, "Aapse matlab?" Maan raised his eyebrow and said, "Oh! Main toh bhool hi gaya tha ki tum Geet ki team main ho. No problem… no problem at all… main soch raha tha ki jaake Brij Uncle ko bata doon ke kal raat mere kamre main koi ghus aaya tha" he said. Titto's jaws dropped, "Aap gussa kyun ho rahe ho? Main bata ta hoon na… (Titto said flashing a smile while Maan crossed his arms and started tapping his foot impatiently) Geet Di, farms ki taraf gayi hain" said that Titto ran away from there and Maan smiled and ran a hand through his hair.

Geet flipped the photo album to find a picture of her and Maan sitting near the small rivulet that runs through her town. This picture was taken by Titto a few days after her wedding but the place had some memories that no one else was privy of. She blushed as she thought about their first kiss.

Dipping her legs in the small water reservoir amidst the vast fields, Geet sat on the bridge watching the booming sunflowers in the fields. It was this season when the lush green fields would turn into picturesque expanse of endless yellow streaks. She loved it all! How could she leave it all behind? Her family wanted to get her married and was also entertaining the potential suitors who sent in a proposal for her. Not to mention one of those guys was sitting at her home now. It didn't help that she felt drawn towards him. Did she like him? No ways… her mind screamed back and she shut her eyes as her thoughts started wandering back to the certain guest at her place. The beautiful environment calmed her and she shut her eyes when his voice interrupted her peace again, "Mind if I join?" and before she could deny, he was seated beside her on the bridge.

"Nice place" he said looking around. "Hmm" came the reply. "So is this your hiding?" he asked smiling devilishly. "Why would I need a hiding now?" she turned to him. "Of course to run away" he said. "From whom?" she asked incredulously. "From me, of course" he replied grinning. She glared at him but turned to look straight ahead. "Tum humesha itni chup toh nahi rehti, hai na?" he probed again. "Aapse kya?" she retorted. Had it been someone else the comment could have been rude but then coming from her it sounded nothing more than a fit coming from an innocent child. "May be… I'm the one to whom it would matter the most" he replied cheekily. "Listen… don't get your hopes high" she said gravely. Maan was trying hard to keep his smile in check… Was she adorable… hell yes she was! And in his heart, he already knew she was going to be his! "Hopes? Regarding what?" he asked feigning innocence. He was trying to rile her up and she could see that. She was about to retort when his phone buzzed. Exchanging a few words quickly, he disconnected the call and turned to her, something was playing in her mind now and he could see that.

"Isn't that the new apple iphone that is yet to be launched in India?" she asked eyeing his phone. He looked at his phone, then at her and smiled. "Can I have a look?" she asked extending her hand. "Sure" he placed it in her hand. She looked at the phone and then at him, "Are you a techno-buff she asked?" Maan was confused from where was her sudden queries were coming from but was glad that she was making a conversation, maybe she was fascinated by the gadget, he thought. "I like to keep myself updated with the technology" he snawered her query with a small smile.  "And what do you think about the cell phones?" she asked. And then he saw the glint that crossed her eyes and he felt suddenly uncomfortable. "It's kind of a necessity today" Maan replied cautiously as he looked at his phone in her hand uncertainly. With that, she lifted his phone in the air and smiled slyly, "too bad" said that she dropped the phone in the water below and feigned a shock, "oops! Sorry" she said and he looked at her with wide-eyes but her eyes with twinkling with laughter. Initially Maan was too stunned to say anything and just then as he turned to her, she started laughing. He glared at her with murderous eyes as she started laughing at his expressions. And then before she knew, he pulled her close and captured her lips with his. Geet's eyes grew wide as she started hitting him with her small fists. However, Maan's hold was strong on her and he gently nibbled on her lower lip before letting her go. It was she now who glared at him with murderous eyes, and Maan's eyes were twinkling with mischief when he said, "oops! Sorry!" with a hint of amusement in his voice.

Angry, Geet tried to get up from the bridge but he pulled her back and whispered huskily, "I'm not getting my hopes high Geet, I know you are mine" said that he got up and left the place leaving behind a stunned Geet. His words and actions had stirred something inside her which she couldn't deny. She touched her lips taking in what had exactly happened just now. She had just experienced her first kiss and then his possessive claim had left her off guard. Somewhere inside, she knew she liked it. And so she was confused.

Still dazed, Geet came back home an hour later to find him sitting in the living room with the rest of her family, while Pammi brought in tea for all. "Aaja puttar" Mohinder called her and made her sit beside him. "Mujhe lagta hai Maan aur Geet ko ek baar akele baat kar leni chahiye" Savitri Devi said. Geet's head snapped at Maan and he winked at her, she wished she could tell upon his actions in the field but tried as much, she neither found the words nor the heart to reveal their moment… it felt too personal… too precious! And his lop-sided grin told her that he already knew that she was not going to disclose their little secret. It irked her further. She looked at his Daarji, hoping for him to turn down the request, sparing her from being alone with the man who was already playing havoc with her senses. But Daarji gave her an apologetic look, mouthed a please and encouraged her to go ahead. Of all the things, how could she let her Daarji down? And so, she agreed.

She picked up her mug of piping hot tea and got up to go to her bedroom, her personal space. Rano nudged her to pick Maan's coffee mug too but Geet just turned a blind eye and went inside while Rano glared at her back. Maan smiled, picked up his coffee and followed her.

Once in her room, they sat across from each other on the coffee table placed in one corner of the room. Geet looked everywhere but at Maan. Maan smiled at her antics and asked, "So?" She turned to him, "So?" she shot back. "I didn't think that you would keep our kiss a secret from your family" he teased her. She glared at him, "Why do you want to get married?" she asked completely ignoring his comment. He raised his brows, "Oh! I didn't know you were that forward. Mujhe live-in se bhi koi problem nahi hai. Let me speak to Dadi Ma" he riled her further completely enjoying himself. Geet shut her eyes to control her rising temperature, "I DIDN'T mean that!" she said through gritted teeth. He sipped his coffee and asked, "toh phir? What did you mean?" Her eyes flared at him, "Why do you want to marry ME? You hardly know me… (holding her chin high) For all you know I might be a les" she finished boldly. Maan spat the coffee he had just sipped and looked at her in amazement. The girl was certainly something! She wouldn't give in easily… would she? He thought and threw his head back while he started laughing. Geet was perplexed, she was so confident that this would push him away and here he was laughing out aloud as if she had just cracked a joke of the century. The pout was back as her shoulders slumped in resignation.

"Desperate times calls for desperate ploys, isn't it?" he laughed while she winced and looked away. Suddenly, his eyes grew soft and he reached over to hold her hand, "look at me Geet" he said sincerely. Reluctantly, she turned to look at him, "Trust me… I won't force you for anything. Now would you tell me the real reason behind your denial". The sincerity in his voice touched her as his eyes searched hers. "I don't want to leave my family" she finally admitted meekly. Maan smiled at her in affection and grazed her hand with his thumb trying to assure her as he spoke, "And who's asking you to leave them?" she looked at him with confusion, "Geet, you have a wonderful family. Your parents, your Daarji, your uncle and aunt, your siblings… everyone. And look at me… I have only my Dadi Ma to call my family. I'm not invading their place in your life… I'm only asking you to make me a part of it all. Marriage doesn't mean to leave behind your family Geet. It means to start a new one." Dazed, Geet found herself lost in his words as he continued to explain her his views about marriage.

Sun rahi hoon sudh budh khoke koi main kahani
Poori kahani hai kya kise hai pata
Main to kisiki hoke yeh bhi na jaani
Ruth hai ye do pal ki ya rehgi sada
(kise hai pata… kise hai pata)

She didn't know how long she stared at him, till he finally asked her, "Would you honour me to begin one with me?" Maan finished with utmost sincerity. Behind the calm expressions, he tried to hide the anxiety that was running through him, however, she read it all in his eyes. Oblivious to her own action, she placed a comforting hand over his. What drew this change, she had no idea… but there was something in his voice that compelled her to submit and that is exactly what she did by nodding in affirmation. A million dollar smile lit up his expressions and Geet knew that together they were going to make it. Maan came towards her and pressed his lips on her forehead, muttering a thank you.

The families were happy beyond imaginations. The Handa's were stunned when Geet gave her nod without throwing any tantrums but Daarji smiled and gave a thumbs up to Maan. Rajji, Pari and Titto were too stunned to react. And if that was not all, the blush that adorned the cheeks of the Handa princess only made her more adorable.

Geet flipped the pages to come across a picture where she and Maan were busy shooting daggers at each other through their eyes. Yes…. they were two contrasting personalities and never missed an opportunity to rile up each other. This picture was taken on one of the wedding functions but this wasn't their first fight. She smiled remembering a small incident that had occurred just the next day after their families had approved and blessed their union.

After finalizing everything, Maan and Dadi Ma left from Amritsar the next morning. This time it was Daarji and Geet who accompanied them to the station. Daarji sat in front with the driver while Dadi Ma, Geet and Maan sat behind. Sandwiched between Dadi Ma and Maan, Geet had a tough time to deal with Maan's ministrations. Dadi ma and Daarji were discussing wedding and Maan refused to let go Geet's hand even for a second. She glared at him, fearing Daarji or Dadi Ma would take notice of his actions but he was totally unconcerned. Geet tried to pull back but he refused to let go. Hadd ho gayi… "Sirf baat pakki hui hai aur yeh aise haq jata rahe hain… babaji agar Daarji ne dekh liya toh" she rued and when nothing worked she kicked his foot indignantly. Unprepared, Maan gasped at her audacity but then quickly recovered and kicked back, carefully though as to not to hurt her in the process. Geet's jaws dropped at his less gentlemanly ways and she replied back with a harder kick. He was furious at her attitude… their marriage has been set… she was his… he didn't understand why couldn't she just let him hold her hand then! Too eager to show her his claim on her, he gently caressed the back of her hand with his thumb sending goosebumps through her entire body. In reply, she pinched his leg hard. Maan coughed to cover the cry while she smiled triumphantly. If Dadi Ma and Daar ji noticed anything that was happening between them, they didn't make it too obvious.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Ouch" Geet gasped as she felt one more contraction in less than an hour's time. She clutched her belly till the contraction lasted. Dadi Ma was by her side in a moment and was trying to comfort her. They knew she was close. But there was sometime… When the contraction subsided, Geet smiled at Dadi Ma in assurance and the old lady went to rest in her arm chair anxiously waiting for Maan to return. Geet went back to see her wedding album and her eyes were drawn towards the picture that was taken after the wedding were she was supposedly sitting coyly on their marriage bed while waiting for her husband to arrive.

Their marriage was nonetheless a grand event of Delhi. Two months after Khuranas left for Delhi, the Handas went there. It was a week before the wedding. Time flew away in a giffy. Each day there was one event planned leaving little or no time for the families to even breathe in peace. And then before anyone knew, it was the day of the wedding and Maan and Geet took vows of togetherness that was to last forever. Like a typical wedding, Geet and Maan did all the post marriage rituals while the families enjoyed to the fullest. Geet was finally taken to Maan's room… which was now their bedroom. One of Maan's aunts made her sit on the nuptial bed and it was then that someone had taken his picture. The soft mattress was comforting and promising to her tired body as her sleep-deprived mind could think of nothing more than a good night's sleep.

The girls and the women teased her mercilessly while she sat with her head bent low. "As if I'm letting him come between me and my beauty sleep for tonight" she muttered under her breath and felt like sticking out her tongue to all the stupid relatives who refused to leave her alone. When finally they left, she heaved a sigh of relief and let her duppata down her head to look around the room that was decorated with flowers and candles. She was in his room for the first time, but she felt strangely comfortable. This was also her room now, the knowledge quickly seeped in to give her a sense of belonging towards the place. But it was not going to be tonight. Not only was she tired, she knew she needed time to know him better before taking their relationship ahead. She knew he would understand her. As she raised her eyes to appreciate the beauty of the flowers that adorned the bed, her eyes caught a sight of some creepy green-colored creature that was staring down at her from one of the flowers. Traces of sleep left her eyes, whilst she shrieked and jumped up on the bed.

And that was how Maan saw her when he entered the room. For a moment, he stood stunned at her reaction wondering if she was shrieking at the sight of him. But then, the next moment, she jumped down from the bed and came running towards him causing him to take a tentative step back. It was only when she clutched his arm and tried to brush her lehnga that he realized that something had scared her. "Kya hua Geet?" he asked concerned trying to hold her in place. "Woh… woh… wahan pe keeda" she managed to say while she pointed towards the bed. Maan gaped at her for a couple of moments and threw his head back laughing while she explained to him that she had seen some green colour garden worm in the flowers around the bed. This has to be first time when any bride would have welcomed her husband by jumping and running around the room, he had teased her. She scowled at his insensitive attitude. "Fine… now forget it and go to sleep" he gently told her by making her turn to look at him. She smiled at him as she realized how right she was. He had understood her but what amazed her more was the fact that he understood her without even her having to say anything to him. It was their first night and like typical men he had not expected her to submit herself to him. His understanding nature touched her heart. However, she quickly changed her opinion when he urged her to sleep on the bed! "How can you expect me to sleep there, knowing there is a creepy insect hiding somewhere in those flowers" she shuddered. Maan rolled his eyes at her and pulled down all the flowers that the decorators had arranged and even inspected the bed thoroughly for her. Once she was satisfied she snuggled in the bed and was fast asleep within a few minutes. Maan rolled his eyes at her and put a comforter around her before he took his place beside her, satisfied to just have her beside him for the moment. With that even he fell into a peaceful slumber.

Days passed, as they came to know each other better. They argued and fought like kids. They enjoyed each other's company like pals. Geet's habit of drooling over television hunks and their bodies irked him to no extent. Soon she started taking over the responsibilities at home. She joined office with him. Their discussion varied on polarities from a healthy discussion to an ugly debate. They understood each other's silence perfectly.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Aahhh" came in another contraction. She took in deep breaths to calm her nerves and messaged Maan to come back soon. I'm going to kill him if he delays it beyond 5, she said when she noticed the clock marking 4:15. "Relax baby. Daddy is coming… relax" she tried to speak to the baby. Dadi Ma was worried and she could see it in her eyes. Geet assured Dadi Ma and shut her eyes as she laid down on her bed uncomfortably. As she did, her thoughts picked up from where she had left them.

She remembered the night when she had witnessed the passionate side of her husband for the first time. They couldn't deny that they were drawn towards each other from the very beginning. Their relationship had taken off on a right note and love had blossomed. The more they drew close, the more he yearned for her. He wanted to make her his completely and Geet had clearly read his need for her in his eyes. But before that, she wanted to confess her feelings to him. And that, she had done… on the New Year's Eve! They were returning from a party when she had asked him to take her to his favourite place, near the lake. She knew it was his favourite place and she had come to like it too. It was serene and isolated. Looking in his eyes, she had held his hand and had whispered, "I love you" to him. And then she had taken the initiative to kiss him. Overwhelmed by the emotions, Maan deepened the kiss and hugged her to himself as close as he could.

Once home, in the confines of their room when Maan was about to walk away, Geet held his hand which caused him to stop in his tracks and look at her in puzzlement. The look in her eyes and the blush on her face was enough for him to know that she was ready or as eager as he was. He lifted her in his arms and laid her down on the bed kissing her fervently while his hands roamed all over her body exciting her and urging her to respond back with the same passion. She held him tight and his lips traveled down teasing her jaw and her neck. He slipped his hand under her kurti while his tongue tasted her soft skin at the hollow of her throat eliciting a moan that drew him towards insanity. He nibbled on her collar bone and threw away her duppata. Turning her on her stomach, he unzipped her kurti from the back and undid the hook of her bra thereby exposing her back to him. She moaned when he placed open mouthed kisses on her bare back before he made her sit and got rid of her kurti. He held her hands preventing her from hiding away from him while he kissed her senseless once again. His lips trailed towards her shoulders and she clutched him hard while his lips explored her sensitive feminine spots. He tugged at the waist band of her chudidar and pulled it off of her before he undressed himself and came back to her. Baring her completely, he explored her leisurely. And then with one thrust, as she gasped, he made her his.

He kissed away her tears and made love to her with a vigour that had her screaming and clawing at his back. His passion drove her to the edge while he let himself loose in her totally. And finally they had together culminated their passionate voyage that fulfilled their existence.

Geet blushed deeply at the memory. She was also amazed that how after so many years, after spending so many intense nights together… it was the memory of their first time that was so firmly engraved in her mind. She smiled, as she remembered how insatiable Maan had been that night but then she frowned… was it only that night? No! He had been insatiable ever since! She thought but then slightly smacked her head to deflect herself from those thoughts.

Geet braced her hands at her side and tried to get to the sitting position. She was about to pour herself a glass of water when she felt an intense contraction and she struggled to catch her breath. Geet called for Dadi ma as she doubled over in pain and shrieked holding her belly. Instantly, Dadi ma was there by her side, trying to ease her worries. She instructed her to breathe and took the phone to call Maan and check where the he was.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Maan had just entered the house when he heard Geet's scream and his blood ran cold. He ran up the stairs to find Dadi ma trying to call him while Geet was visibly distressed. "Maan Kahan the aap" Dadi Maa asked while Maan sat by Geet trying to run a comforting hand behind her back. "I'm sorry dadi Ma… woh…" he was about to continue when Geet yelled, "Damn with the reasons Maan, we need to go to the hospital!" and this at once drew Maan and Dadi Ma's attention while Maan instantly picked her up and carried her towards the car. Once in the car, Dadi Ma sat with Geet in the backseat while Maan drove towards the hospital in a mad rush. He cursed the traffic under his breath only to get a smack from her, "Dare you mutter swear words in front of my baby girl" said that she started taking deep breaths. "Geet... this is no time to admonish me for my lack of fortitude" he snapped back causing Geet to whimper. "Maan!" it was Dadi Ma who warned him to check his tone.

After half an hour when they reached hospital, Maan was panicky for Geet was now in too much pain and the thought was unacceptable to him. At once, she was taken in labour room, where the doctors readied her for the delivery. Maan held her hand providing her the emotional support that she needed at this moment. However, when Geet's water broke, Maan turned his face a notch away unable to see her going through the pain. He was appalled as he didn't know what he could do to calm her. "Its's all because of you" she screamed as she saw him turning away. "Don't you dare turn away now" she warned amidst her shrieks while he looked at her too stunned and worried to react.

Thandi hai angeethi
Seeli seeli hain deewarein
Goonje takra ke in mein dil ki sada

Goonje hai re

In a moment, all the times they have spent together flashed in front of his eyes. "I'm sorry baby. I never knew it would be so painful" he apologized not knowing what else he could do. "And what would have changed if you knew you moron!" she yelled. Maan looked at her incredulously taken aback by the tone of her speech. She dug her nails in his palm as he tried to soothe her but in all honesty it was becoming all too much for him and for a second he really felt dizzy. But Geet quickly caught on with the look and yelled, "DARE YOU! DARE YOU MR MAAN SINGH KHURANA… DARE YOU FAINT… I SWEAR I'M GOING TO KICK YOUR PERFECT ROUND ASS!" she screamed at him and the faintest hint of dizziness leapt away with the threat in her eyes. The doctors urged her to push and she did but whilst she cursed him again, "I knew it… I knew it marriage was never a good idea" she cried. "But you don't need to be married to get pregnant" Maan blurted almost instantly. She snapped her head at him, "tumhe mazak soojh raha hai… Mazak soojh raha hai… come here deliver a baby and then talk about the facts!" she snapped back and screamed again, "I'm not going to live through this" she cried.

Watching her wither in pain, Maan realized why he was here… why had he not let her go back to Amritsar to be with her family… it was for her and their baby. He realized that he was weakening her rather than being the strength she needed then. And so, he shut his eyes momentarily and bent to her side to whisper in her ears, "I love you baby… it's going to be alright… you can do it… a little more… you can do it Mishti" the confidence that his voice held for her and the love and affection that his warm caress on her back reinforced her with the strength and confidence and she pushed with all her might. Half an hour later, she gave a final push and her screams were replaced by the shrill cry of their little miracle. "It's a boy!" the nurse announced and Maan winked at Geet smiling at his little victory. Geet pouted at him but then turned her attention to her boy and looked at him in adoration and love.

Geet was shifted to another ward where the nurse cleaned and brought their little baby to them. Maan and Dadi Ma thanked an exhausted Geet for the happiness she has brought in their lives. And tears of joy fell from his eyes when he held the little baby in his hands. He kissed Geet on the top of her head and Dadi Ma blessed the couple and the little child before leaving them to have a little moment of their own. Maan pecked on geet's lips and engulfed her in a side hug while they both admired their little baby.

"I told you we are having a boy" Maan teased her. "So what… I'll win the next time" Geet uttered softly before she gave a gentle peck on her baby's cheek. Maan placed the baby back in the crib while her eyes were fixated on her bundle of joy. He held her as she drifted off to sleep and he kept looking at her in awe and respect. His Mishti… his wife… his love… and now the mother of his kid. He wiped out the single tear that made his way down his eyes and kissed the back of her palm before he laid down beside her, happy and content.

Excellent piece of writing...very engaging and interesting. I loved how the story moved seamlessly between the past and the present. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The characters of Maan and Geet were very well etched and so were those of the supporting characters. I loved how you depicted that even after marriage they had their good times and their disagreements. 😆  😆 😆

I particularly enjoyed the antics of Geet and her cousins and Maan's response to them. 😆 😆 😆

Thanks for a wonderful read. 😳
