Why do people chant 'Ram nam satya hei' when a person is dead? Ain't it a universal truth, regardless of whether one is dead or alive? In other words, what are the origins of this 'ritual' - I can't imagine it going even far back as the Dwapar Yuga.

Dunno when this came into vogue but according to wikipedia the Satya refers to breath. A dead body cannot say Raam naam (because no breath) and therefore the dead person's body has become worthless.

More info from various web sources: It looks like Gandhiji used to say this phrase often. Looks like the origin is recent!

Other explanations: only Raam naam is truth and everything else is maya (illusion) including life and death. I guess chanting this at death is supposed to reinforce this idea for everyone.

Also Raam naam is truth and therefore chanting it is the only way to mukti and an escape from the curse of birth and death.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for starting this topic Vrisha Bhaiya 😊

As Khalrika di said, this ritual seems to be of recent origin.

I am not sure as to why or when this custon started. It would make more sense to say any God's name.

My guess is that this might be red tapism.

I would think something like 'Yamraj satya jai' or something along those lines would be more apt
