Shilpa Shukla's a bad, bad girl!

Chak De India's Shilpa Shukla has still not completely shaken her tough hockey chic image, but then again, she's not really trying that hard, is
she?
'I'm glamour girl on Jhalak Dikhla Ja, that's where I get to look pretty," she protests, "and playing tough girl on Rajuben on the small screen, gives me my dose of reality."
At first, she confesses, she was annoyed at being teased with "Bindiya, where's your team" wherever she went, "But then I began to realise it's a huge compliment to be associated with your character, that just means the character was so strong."
And strength I something Shilpa identifies with. "Rajuben is a superwoman. I mean she plays mom, she plays daughter, she plays gangster – she is very involved with the various relationships in her life and takes them right to the very end, that makes her very, very layered."
Shilpa, a former theatre actor, identifies deeply with the gangster. "She's given a face to many faceless women. I personally too identify with her because I know what it's like. I grew up in a family that was very academically inclined – my dad was with the Income Tax Department. It took me a lot to convince them that my interest in theatre was okay. I used to do a lot of leftist, socialist, street theatre. It was only after about three years that my dad came to know I was doing stage. So in that sense I understand the core of Rajuben – the need to be a strong woman."
From stage to the big screen to the small screen – quite a few ups and downs? "Well, a lot of people didn't know what to do with me post Chak De. It's only now avenues for these kind of roles have increased. In that sense, it typifies the gangster I'm playing – there's no wrong or right. There's just destiny that leads you to your roles."
