Part 2: First night in Mumbai
Finally Sandeep's flight lands in Mumbai. It's been a long and tiring
trip. As he walks out, he sees a staff member from the newspaper
waiting to collect him & take him to his new place. On the drive,
the guy mentions that he had tried to call Sandeep to let him know he
would be there but his phone was switched of. Switched off? Of course!
For the plane, but now Sandeep knows Urmi will have been calling him,
worrying..
Sandeep switches on his cell. There are 4 missed calls and 3 messages. Before he can dial the phone rings. It is Urmi.
U: Aap ne itni der cell kyun off karke rakha tha?
S: Urmi plane mein cell off karke rakhna chahiye.
U: Par plane se nikal kar on nahin kar sakte?
S: Urmi main jaan bujh kar aisa kyun karonga.
U: Mujhe satane ke liye. Aapko mujhe satane mein bada maza aata hain.
S: Urmiii...
From the background he hears Sujata saying 'Kya phone par chipki hui
hain aur usse pareshan kar rahi hain....chal mujhe de'. So saying
Sujata takes the phone.
Sujata: Sandeep tu thik thak pahunch gaya na?
S: Ji
Pammi taking the phone from Sujata.
Pammi: Woh jo alu ke paranthe diye the maine woh khaa liye na?
Before Sandeep can reply Sukka takes the phone.
Sukka: Puttar tujhe airport par koi lene aaya hain?
Rasik taking the phone from Sukka 'Arre kyun nahin lene ayenge?'
Rasik to Sandeep on phone: Sandeep sunn tu abhi jaa raha hain ghar ya phir pehle tu hotel ya guest house mein tehrega?
S: Abhi seedhe ghar hi jaa raha hoon.
Rasik: Achcha aur ghar kahan hain.
Ratiram taking the phone from Rasik.
Ratiram: Woh tum baad mein pooch lena.
To sandeep on the phone.
Ratiram: Samaan thik thak pahunch gaya na?
In the same manner the phone gets passed around to everyone in the
mohalla. Finally Sandeep requests Mahua to give Bauji the phone.
Sandeep: Bauji aap ne dawai khaa liya na?
Bauji: Urmi aayi thi dawai khilane. Lagta hain tune usse sab sikha padake bheja hain.
Sandeep laughs.
Bauji: Aur sunn iss ladki ko jab woh kahe phone kar liya kar. Nak mein dum kar rakha tha.
Sandeep gives a wry smile.
S: Bauji apna khyal rakhiyega. Achcha mein phone rakhta hoon. Lagta hain ghar aa gaya hain.
So saying he keeps the phone. They have reached the appartment which is
given by the newspaper to its editor. This is where Sandeep will be
staying for the next one year. The staff member Suraj who had come to
pick him up says:
Suraj: Lagta hain bahut log aap ko already miss kar rahe hain.
S: Haan meri family hain.
Suraj: Tab toh Mumbai aana aapke liye mushkil raha hoga? Meri family bhi Nagpur mein rehti hain.
S: Haan lekin zindagi mein kuch karne ke liye kabhi kabhi mushkil decisions lene padte hain.
Suraj: Sahi kehte hain aap.
So saying that, they go up to Sandy's new apartment.
Sandy finally walks into his new place. He looks around, taking it all
in...it's fully furnished, very well done up but lacking the homely
touch. He's spent his journey thinking over the last couple of days.
Kitna kuch hua! He had never thought things would take this turn...that
the whole mohalla would find out in such a way. That they would have
unanimously supported him..that itself had overwhelmed him. He recalls
Bauji stepping in to talk to Rasik .. Sukka & Saurabh's employment
offers and Guptaji tellilng him to go work with Naresh...but most of all
he remembers the feel of Urmi's hand in his.
He could feel her
trembling throughout it all..her fear was giving him the strength he
needed to make the decision he didn't want to make. He had never wanted
a high flying career which needed him to work long hours, it was what
he had stayed away from out of choice! But the feeling of Urmi's hand
in his was one that he wanted to feel forever..and if that meant
proving himself by succeeding as a Mumbai editor then so be it. He was
ready to make that sacrifice.
Looking around the apartment he starts to unpack. First things first,
he puts away all the food that Ratiram, Sujata and Pammi have packed for him,
the theplas alone will be enough for a month! After the food is safely
stored, he start with his favourite things, his books. As he is going
through putting them on the bookshelf, suddenly a bit of paper flutters
out of one and heads towards the balcony. Sandeep walks over to pick it
up and realises it's a picture of Urmi! He'd forgotten all about that
picture! He picks it up, remembering...how had he taken so long to
realise? How had it taken him so long to understand her love - and
importantly, his own?
He had almost lost her. Had it not been for Zoya that evening, maybe he
would have gone ahead and married Vasudha. Or would he? He had always
known in his heart of hearts that he was meant to be Urmi. Would he
have done something about that if Zoya had not given him those rings?
He smiles to himself, no point in thinking about all that now. Now he has to focus on making a success of his year in Mumbai.
Suddenly, he hears a commotion coming from outside. He walks out
towards the balcony, trying to find out where the noise is coming from.
He looks around, and finally sees a woman telling a girl off. The girl
is young, maybe about 10 years old, and it's obvious that being told
off like this is a regular occurance for her! The girl looks so much
like the woman that it's clear they are mother and daughter. Suddenly a
man appears, trying to step between the mother and daughter. The girl
hides behind the man, and the woman starts to shout at him instead!
As the man & woman continue to argue, the girl runs off to join
her friends who are waiting for her...the woman yells out "Tanvi!! Kaha
ja rahi ho! Yaha aao!" But's its to no avail, the girl is gone and the
man is left trying to calm the woman down. The scene reminds Sandeep of
Pammi & Sukka. Even the look on the girl's face is reminiscent of
Jugle!
Suddenly Sandeep can't help but think of Colonel Gunj. The 4 velle,
Saurabh and Mauha, Sukka & Pammi, Bauji...he's never been left alone
for so long before. Back in CG someone would have been knocking on his
door by now, if no-one else it would have been Urmi bringing him dinner.
Urmi..with her nakhre, Urmi, with her determination. Urmi, with her
single focus. She had always been right by his side, never giving him a
chance to feel lonely. Even when he had been rude to her, she didn't
leave his side...
Since the scene with the mohalla yesterday he's had very little chance
to spend much time with her. It had all been so rushed, even on the call
now he had said barely two words to her before the rest of the mohalla
had taken over. His eyes search the vista in front of him, looking
desperately for the one person he know can't be there. He wonders how
she's feeling. Before he realises what he's doing, he's calling her..
Urmi picks up after 1 ring.
S: Suno tumne bauji ko dawai de di na?
U: Haan.
S: Aur tumne riyaaz kiya hain na?
U: Riyaaz ke baare mein toh bhool hi gayi. Lekin ab jab mere guruji nahin hain toh...
S: Urmi suno main nahin chahta ki tum riyaaz karna chod do. Aur aunty
se kehelwa kar naye teacher ke paas jana shuru kar do warna tumhara
riyaaz choot jayega.
U: Sandeep babu.
S: Hmm..
U: Kya aap mere riyaaz ke baare mein baat karne ke liye phone kiya hain?
S: Haan...nahin actually bauji ke dawai ke baare mein bhi poochna tha.
U: Achcha?
S: Aur Gupta aunty ka haath jal gaya tha na? Woh kaisa hain?
U: Gupta uncle unhe station se laute waqt hi doctor ke paas leke gaye the. Accha suniye...aapne khana khaya?
S: Nahin. Khaa loonga. Urmi...
U: Hmmm...
S: Itne mahino baad pehli baar tum muhje dinner serve nahin karogi.
U: Isi liye toh keh rahi thi ki main bhi chalti hoon...toh phir dinner bhi serve karti aur lunch bhi.
S(strictly): Urmi...
U: Sandeep Babu!
S: Aur tumhare papa? Woh kya sochte? Kya kabhi bhi main un se aankh mila pata?
U: Mujhe pata hain Sandeep babu yeh aapke liye kitna mushkil tha. CG se
sabse zyada lagav aapko hain. Yeh mohalla hi aapka parivaar hain aur
aap kabhi iss mohalle ko chod na nahin chahte. Lekin ab iss tarah
achanak raton raat aapko sab kuch chodna pada. Sab mere khatir.
S: Urmi yeh sab main sirf tumhare liye aur humare future ke liye hi
nahin kiya. Magar shayad apne liye bhi bhi kiya. Lekin yahan aa kar jab
main aaspaas dekhta hoon toh sirf anjaan jageh aur anjaan chehren
dihkai dete hain. Thoda sa CG toh yahan par bhi hain par CG toh nahin
hain. Aur yahan bauji nahin hain...tum nahin ho. Pata nahin Urmi main
yeh kar paonga ya nahin...abhi toh ek din bhi nahin hua hain mujhe
yahan par.
U: Mujhe pata hain ki aap zaroor kar payenge. Shayad humare aane wale
zindagi ke liye yeh zaroori hain. Taki hume kisi baat ka afsoos nahin
reh jaye. Mujhe pakka yakeen hain ki bahut jald sari Mumbai har subah
Sandeep Shukla ke likhe hue editorial padne ke liye bekarar hogi.
S: Haan thik waise hi jaise tum roz bollywood ki khabrein chod kar editorial padti ho.
U: Par aap jo bhi likhte hain woh toh main padti hoon. Maine akhbaar
wale Rahim chacha se baat kar li hain. Woh akhbaar ka Mumbai edition
yahan deliver karenge. Hala ki woh ek din purana hoga. Aur mujhe yakeen
hain ki aapki likhi hui editorial log usi tarah padenge jaise filmi
news padte hain.
Sandeep laughs.
S: Chalo main rakhta hoon.
U: Mummy ke theple khana mat bhuliye.
S: Kaise bhool sakta hoon? Itne saare jo hain. Poore saal chalegi.
Urmi laughs. They put down the phone.
Sandeep walks back into the flat, smiling. Just speaking to Urmi had soothed him, reminded him of why he was doing this in the first place. Now he had to succeed, there was no choice but to. Urmi was his future, and this was what he had to do in order to achieve that. No matter what, he knew he would make this a success because he had to.
He walks to the kitchen and unpacks the theplas, smiling to himself.
