We love each other's company

NOT JUST ROMANCING ON-SCREEN: Shama Sikander and Amit Jain in a still from Ye Meri Life Hai

Pooja (Shama Sikander) and Ronit (Amit Jain) are one of the small screen's most popular young couples. And it seems like their on-screen camaraderie has evolved into an intimate friendship off-screen as well.

The two actors have been spotted at various parties and shopping malls together, and were most recently seen together at a film premiere over the weekend.

We certainly didn't think they were 'just good friends', so we decided to get the story straight from the horse's mouth…

Shama Sikander

• The first time I met Amit was on the sets of the show. We hit it off immediately.

• Both of us come from similar backgrounds and have common interests. Since we spent long hours shooting with each other, we got to know each other better. He's a great guy to be with. I haven't come across anyone who is as honest and forthcoming as him.

• He is totally transparent in his dealing with people and that's what I admire azbout him. Also, since he comes from Delhi he doesn't have many friends here, which is why I like giving him company.

• Are we dating? No. Is it possible in the future? Maybe.

• Right now both of us are focused on our careers. It's our priority, and everything else has taken a back seat.

• But yes, our friendship is special in the sense that we enjoy hanging out with each other.

Amit Jain

• Shama and I spend a lot of time together off the set. I know we've been spotted at many malls and we go for movies together, but that's only because I enjoy her company and we are very close friends.

• She's a wonderful person to be with and her personality puts you at ease.
I am quite close to her family and she to mine. I admire the way she's come to this point through hard work and struggle.

• People think we're dating or are in a serious relationship because we hang out together so often, but I think it's too soon to take that step.

• It may or may not happen in the future. As of now, I want to concentrate on work and am sure it's the same with her.

• We're very physical with each other, in the sense that we fool around and pull each other's cheeks, but those are just signs of being close friends and being comfortable in each other's company.

Breaking the ice

Shama and Amit on screen Outofthebox "Like in the serial, Yeh Meri Life Hai, Ronit and I began with a bad note in real life also. Unlike the rest, he wasn't present for the workshops, because he had flown to Australia for the shooting of his Mountain Dew ad. Consequently, we were very curious about him. He was considered the most happening dude in the group because Muskaan (Mandy on screen) and I were playing very simple girls. I am a simple girl in real life too. When he arrived, he greeted the others because they introduced themselves. I was sitting in a corner and reading, he said hello to the person sitting next to me, but didn't wish me. I thought to myself, 'Who the hell does he thinks he is?' And to make matters worse, he started coming late for the rehearsals. I thought he is behaving like a star. Irked at being kept waiting, I ticked him off. From the next day, he was punctuality personified. Since Amit was supposed to be a brat in the serial, he actually behaved like one. I was bugged with him and did not speak to him for five-six days. We would do our scenes and go back home. Muskaan, Ajay and I were one group, while Kushan and Toastee (Annie) and Simple Kaul (Rima) were a group by themselves. After a week, Amit started talking to me out of the blue. We all had small cars, but he would drive down in a chauffeur-driven Esteem. My attitude was: Yeh kya samajtha hai apne aap ko. But when he spoke about working so that he could gather money for charity, I was really impressed. He has a rock-like exterior, but he is as soft as a candle at heart. There are quite a few parallels between the way our relationship is projected on screen and the way it unfolded off-screen. Shama and Amit off screen We spend most of our time together because we live next to each other. We are members of a common gym. Most importantly, we are together on the set for 16-18 hours, chatting away incessantly. On a few occasions, we have travelled home together. Besides, our families are close so we dine out a lot. My producer Vipul D Shah, who is also a family friend, and Amit didn't wish me on my birthday. I was very disappointed, but I learnt later that it was deliberate. They had planned a surprise party for me at Myst. Amit showered me with flowers and chocolates — I couldn't have asked for better gifts. Recently, when I collapsed on the sets, Amit and a few production people rushed me to the hospital. He sat the whole night at the hospital despite shooting the whole day. For two nights, he sat on a chair by my side. I have met his parents and I am very close to his brother. His mother (Leela Jain) is a real sweetheart. Will this friendship lead to marriage? I have no clue. All I can say is that he is the best friend that I have. He is understanding and gives me space and we enjoy each other's company. He is very sweet, but I haven't given marriage a thought — I don't want to marry right now.
