Chapter 2 ' To New York

Taani vigorously bit her nails while she walked into the huge building. The place always gave her the goose bumps, although she could never figure out why. Maybe because this place was the one about which she thought she would never be able to enter - yes, it was the Ganguly group of companies, the most successful company in India. It was true that she knew Anurag in school, but they never shared an intense relationship, according to her. So when she was approached to do the interior decoration of their new branch in Kolkata, she was surprised like crazy. Apparently, Shekhar Ganguly's personal assistant was her late father, Bimal's close friend. That's how she ended up doing a project for the GGC.

She made sure that she put in her best to make the work wonderful and submitted it. But now, she was called to the main office to talk with the one and only Shekhar Ganguly. All she could do now was just hope - hope that he wasn't angry with her, seeing her work.

Entering the huge office, she felt like she was in another world. The place was so serene and not a tiny speck of dirt could be spotted anywhere. In each intervals, there were refreshment centers and various cabins, with people whose eyes were glue on to the PC. Taani checked her reflection in a mirror to confirm that she looked perfect. In her peacock blue salwar, she looked like the angel from heaven.

"Uncle!" Taani called out as she caught sight of the person, Mr. Sharma who helped her. "When can I see Mr. Ganguly?"

"Umm...let me just check his schedule'" he said and looked through a file. "Right now. I'll lead you." He said with a smile and led her to Shekhar Ganguly's cabin.

Taani heart started beating more than normal and she felt dizzy. With fingers crossed, she entered his cabin. A stout man in his mid-fifties faced her. "Please take a seat." He said with a smile, which made her relax a bit. She found a British accent in his voice.

"So...Ms. Bannerjee, right?" he asked. Taani nodded slowly. "Any idea on why I called?"

God!If he goes like this, he'll soon give me a heart attack. Taani thought. "Maybe because you didn't like my work?" Taani admitted her feelings.

His sudden laughter took her aback. He shook his head and said, "No, Ms. Bannerjee. In fact, it was awesome. And why I called you is to let you know a very important matter. Mr. Sharma told me that you have not completed your course. Why?"

"Umm...family problems, sir'" Taani mumbled.

"Ok. If I said that I've decided to sponsor you and is interested in sending you to the New York University to complete your course, would you like to accept it?" he asked.

Taani felt short of words then. A person like him, sponsoring a girl like her? She couldn't believe it. "Sir..I would like to ask my maa." He nodded. She walked out of the room and immediately called her mother.

"Maa...What should I do?"

"Taani, these kinds of chances will never come again. Tu haan kehde." Labuni maa was adamant.

"Maa...but...I can't '" Taani was about to say, when her maa interfered and said, "'can't leave us? Forget about that. Tumhara mama(labuni maa's bro) hain na?"

"Maa...I think we need to think more about this'" Taani hesitated.

"If you care for your maa, then you have to go'" Labuni maa was adamant. "Aur...Taani...if..um..if you can take Mauli too.."

"Maa!" Taani said at once. "I can't ask that to him. He is already sponsoring me...and how can I ask him like that?..No maa! I am keeping the phone'" Taani cut the phone and went inside to Shekhar's cabin.

"What did your mother say?"

"Umm...she said I can go'"

"So start packing.You are leaving tomorrow'" Shekhar said.

"Tomorrow? But sir'"

"Don't worry about anything else...There will be my assistants to take care of everything'"Shekhar nodded.

"Sir, saying thanks would be an insult'." Taani said. "But still, thank you so much...aap ne mere sapne ko poora kar diya'"

"It's my pleasure to sponsor a talented girl like you." Shekhar told. Taani was about to leave when he said, "Arey haan! I forgot'you have a sister, right? Take her too...'"

In her whole life, she has never seen a great man like this. Taani could only gape at him.

"Dada...you finished packing?" Robi asked, as he sat on his brother's bed.

"Yup'" Anurag who was stuffing his gadgets into his suitcase, turned. The chocolate brown eyes and dimples made him the dream guy of any girl.

"Dada...jaane se pehle mein kuch keh rahi hoon'please don't ruin my reputation by being a snob there." Robi said.

"What the...? Snob, huh? You think I am snob because I am not going out with anyone, right?"

Robi nodded a casual nod.

"Listen...Mr. Robindo Ganguly'I am not interested in dating many girls in one day like you. So just shut up'"

"Arey dada! I was just joking...I know you can't love anyone other than Taani...lekin...what assurance is there that you would find her?"

"I would find her...I just know'." Anurag said, confidence spreading his face.

(Next day)

"Bye baba...We would miss you a lot'" Anurag said, fighting back tears, as he didn't want to look girly.

"Tu ja'." Shekhar said, hiding his tears. Getting separated from his sons was the most difficult thing for him. "Umm...btw, you are not meeting your mom?"

Anurag clenched his teeth. Robi said, "I don't think so, baba. Chalthi hoon...bye'" they hugged for a last time and left.

"Maa...please don't cry...how would we go...if you cry like this?" Taani asked, cupping her mom's cheeks.

"Haan maa'" her sister, Mauli joined her. "We will come back soon, ok?"

Labuni maa just nodded. "Apna khayal rakhna...and...and.."

"I know maa...we shouldn't make friends with any English men, right?" Taani asked, trying to stifle a laugh.

Labuni maa nodded. "Chalthi hoon maa. Apna khayal rakhna..." Both of them said and left.

(In the flight)

"Mauli,your seat is there." Taani said, pointing to a seat behind hers. Mauli nodded and sat, while Taani took her seat. Within hours, they would be in New York, she mused. She had always wanted to study abroad, but she didn't even want to leave her mother. Thinking about her mother, tears appeared in her eyes. She suddenly wiped it off, but saw that she was being watched by someone, who was apparently Anurag.

Anurag looked at the girl, who was the second most prettiest girl for him. Obviously, first would be Taani, no matter what. He especially liked girls without make-up smeared face and this young woman was one of them. Might be twenty or something, he thought. She looked simple, yet angelic in her white salwar. ****! Why am I thinking like this about a stranger? Anurag shook his head, but it just seemed impossible for him to take his eyes off her.

Near to her, was a guy, who looked cute and hot in his tee and jeans. Might be 23 years or something, Taani deliberated. He was staring at her, to which she felt uncomfortable. She knew she wasn't that beautiful to be ogled at like that. She felt something familiar in him, but couldn't figure out what it was. What if I have got something on my face that he is staring at me like that? Taani doubted and suddenly started rubbing her face to which he chuckled.

Precap: Anurag and Taani tells each other, in unison, "Anurag'" he says.

"Taani'" she says. And both of them just stares deeply into each other's eyes.
