I'm only translating this from an interview Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) from DivyaBhaskar Gujarati newspaper

Real Life Pic

Family
Two kids,Daughter in collage and Son in 9th standard.
They live in Mumbai
Originally He is from Gosa village (10 km away from Porbandar, Guajrat)

Childhood:
I started acting in child-plays at the age of 12. I joined Little theatre academy of Namdev Lahute. My first childplay was "Aie Ranchhod Rangila", I was supposed to act as a statute for 7-8 minutes in that drama.

Education
I was in Wilson's College (Mumbai). In the last year I joined N.M. Commerce college.
While doing B.Com, I got INT(Indian National Theatre)'s best actor award twice.
One of that drama was directed by Raju Joshi (Kyoki Saas bhi) and second one was Directed by Niraj Vora (Phir Hera Pheri).
I did piecemeal roles in various dramas but never thought of making acting as my sole profession.

Commercial Success:
1988, (the real) Tarak Mehta converted a Marathi drama into Gujarati, named "Sakha Sahiyara", I got role in it and we did 300 shows of that. After that I never looked back.

First time television break: "Hum Panchhi Ek daal ke"
Then I got the lead role in "Zaraa Hatke" for Zee Tv.
I acted as a Madrasi Rangaa-swaami in "Kya Baat hai"

Films:
N.Chandra saw me in a drama of Sujarata Mehta and gave me a small role in Pratighat.
Then I got comic roles in
  1. Hum Aap ke hai kaun
  2. Phir bhi dil hai hindustani
  3. Khiladi 420
  4. 1 2 kaa 4
  5. Dil hai Tumhara.
  6. Maine Pyar Kiya

Although I still believe, I've never got a proper role in Movies where I could show my real acting skills.
Also acted in a Gujarati movie "Hun Hunshi Hunshilal"

Tarak Mehta ka Ultaa Chashma

When I got the offer, first I rejected it as I was busy with a serial in Sahara One but then that serial production closed down so I joined the Tarak Mehta project.

(Dilip Joshi )

It's a crazy scenario. The entire cast of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is in the city to celebrate the completion of their 700 episodes and it looks like a family affair. Dilip Joshi too is his usual approachable self. It takes more than an hour till you find a hold on him for a chat, only after he has finished greeting, chatting and being clicked by fans and lensmen.

Is it this crazy every time?

(Laughs) Yes, especially when you are in Gujarat.

Has the success sunk in?

To be honest, it has. It's well earned that's why it has. I can say that I have worked hard enough to reach where I am right now.

Is there a long story of struggle?

Yes. Actually my struggle would have started from the very time I would have started acting as a child. I was good in mimicry. My mom thought of putting me in the theater. And these were the days when acting was a social taboo. So from starting to sustaining, it was a battle. Acting is risky business. No matter how big you are, you are never secure. You don't know when you will be out of work. Would you believe if I say that I was almost jobless for an entire year just before I signed Taarak Mehta...!

So what does an actor do during forced sabbaticals?

You introspect! It's very important. You figure where are you lacking, you improve and yes, try and find work! Also the theatre comes to rescue any jobless actor, at least on stage you won't lose the touch.

What keeps you going when you know that you are not doing well, when there is no work at all?

It's your love for the profession, love for acting...I really love acting, so never thought how well I was doing (commercially) or quitting. There was always something or the other, big or small but interesting. And I wasn't dreaming of becoming a big star either.

What were you thinking on the sets of Maine Pyar Kiya/ Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! while playing the small

character roles?

Nothing! In Maine Pyaar Kiya I had a very small role, but on the sets of HAHK I used to feel blessed. I was a small actor standing with all those big stars and I used to wonder that whether it was a dream or a reality!

Do you miss being in films?

Very much. I am looking forward to interesting film offers. Television keeps you so busy that you barely get time even for yourself. By god's grace that I am part of a great team, otherwise it would have been really impossible.

Where do you see yourself in theatre?

I miss being on stage, because I don't have much time to do theatre. But I will never leave theater. I started from there, and when the time comes, I'll do theater again.
