The actor who enacted the part of mentally challenged person for some part of the show feels showing love towards mental patients is very important
This year the theme of World Mental Health Day is dignity for mental health patients. Actor Varun Kapoor was seen as a mentally challenged person for a certain period of time on the telly drama, Swaragini. While he masqueraded as a mental patient on the show, the actor's views on mental patients are pretty serious in real life. He says, "All I can say is dignity is every individual's right whether he is afflicted by mental health issues or not. What I feel is if people can't do anything constructive for them; please don't make life difficult for them either. They too have a heart. It is just that they're unable to cope with situations or perhaps are victims of their circumstances. People who have such issues are more emotional than us but many of them are above average intelligence. I feel we need to reach out and show that little bit of affection that will help them get a grip on life."
Earlier seen as Danny on Saraswatichandra, Varun began his stint on Swaragini as Sanskar, who is mentally challenged. Unlike film actors who have the luxury of long workshops or prep time, TV stars have to learn on the sets only. He explains, "It was quite tough. I used to rehearse in advance. There is this aura around mentally disabled characters in shows but for actors it is very tough as we don't have dialogues in most cases. You only have to emote, which can be tough. Finally, when I had to play a normal guy I found it difficult to shake off the body language. Switching on and off is too taxing."
