Faiz seems to have done better in the rehearsal than the actual shoot!
But they really get their editing priorities wrong!!!
Lots of grudges still remain even from Indian Idol 12 when they edited out key moments / performances of Arunita 😡

Tbh I always feel he is at his best off-screen. His songs in interviews, bts, and yt videos are much more enjoyable than what we have seen in the show. I think too much instruments and background voices tend to muffle his voice a lot. His auditions, with minimal accompaniments, remains his best performances for me so far.
Same with Rohan though. I think he is a really good singer, but he's being restricted as a performer in the show. Not sure about others since I haven't heard all of them off-screen.

Well, what happens in the show is that the TCT Music / Voice coach team under Neeraj Kalkar dictates what and how the participants should sing. And that creates unnecessary issues for the contestants.
Two examples from Idol 12 - of the participants I followed the most, obviously.
Some of the songs Pawandeep sang on the show sounded a bit nasal and as though he was trying to fit into a scale that wasn't natural for him. When he has sung the same songs multiple times on his concerts after the show, he sings them in his natural preferred scale and he sounds significantly better.
For Arunita, since their objective was to promote somebody else at her expense (we know who) they did a lot to create trouble for her. For one thing, she kept getting repeat songs of the ones others had performed earlier, so that there was an unconscious bias towards the first performance. However, she is so far ahead of the others that when she sang the previous performance was forgotten altogether and now the audience only remembers her performance. Secondly, they made life difficult for her by changing her songs. In Idol, they have a 7 day schedule as follows: Wednesday the songs are assigned, Thursday and Friday is for self practice and setting with the band, Saturday is for final setting with the band, Sunday for technical rehearsals, Monday - Tuesday for the shoot. This is a set schedule that gives 5 clear days for the contestant to practice and get comfortable. For Arunita, her mother has gone on record stating that they have often changed her song assignment 1 day before the shoot. That means in that 1 day she has to practice, get the nuances, finalize the setting with the band, and go straight to the rehearsal and shoot. And yet, she being who she is, she unfailingly hit the ball out of the park.
So... long post, but the summary is that the way TCT / Neeraj Kalkar and team work is that they have their biases and their favourites, and they go out of their way to make life difficult for others.

Woah, didn’t know this. Thanks for the detailed explanation.
That explains the poor song choices for some contestants. Like, I always wondered why they highlighted Faiz for one week with his Baatein Ye Kabhi Na but the rest of the weeks his song choices were below average and almost felt like he was struggling to deliver on stage according to what was expected.
Meanwhile, some kids - I think the obvious names are Mani, Rituraj, Sayisha - are given songs well suited to their range and style of singing. Aryananda also seems to suffer the same problems as Faiz, because from what I’ve heard, she’s an impeccable singer. But her performances on the show haven’t been very impressive. And she seems to be struggling while delivering her lines.
Although, why would they deliberately try to control a singer’s performance? Like, wouldn’t it benefit the TCT itself if the singers do well and audiences love the show because everyone is doing well? It’s deplorable that they might be doing this in a kid’s show because like you said, Aru and PD are much experienced singers. But for kids, it would only lower their morale if they are not able to deliver their best, in turn affecting their future performances.

Well, it is deplorable, but that is how it is. And they make no secrets about it. Neeraj Kalkar even chooses whom he wishes on IG on birthdays, who he tags in his posts, and so on.
From some convoluted logic, they probably believe that creating controversy by bringing down good contestants is better for their popularity.
I have had the good fortune of meeting him and few others from RD Burman's band. It is a life lesson to see how humble and down to earth they all are!
