Kids appropriate dance?

Hey guys, I am a huge fan of SD4, and have been silently lurking on the forum throughout the season. Your comments and insights were very entertaining, so thank you! I had a question however. I showed one of the performances of the kids (I think it was the 15 Aug episode?) and she was appalled. She said the kids were not really doing age appropriate dance movies. I mean, the twerking and the belly dancing, I guess they are art forms that should be appreciated, but the reality is that they are sexualised, and it might not be appropriate for them to dance to this? This made me feel very uncomfortable.

A few years ago, there was a huge uproar over the Netflix film the Cuties, in which little girls twerked and did other inappropriate steps? Furthermore, is it also appropriate for the Gurus to dance in romantic items with the kids? I mean in a perfect world there is no reason to see dance in any other way, but my friend also told me she finds it inappropriate.

I am a huge fan of SD, and I am afraid my love for the shows and uber cute kids cloud my judgement. What do yall think? I hope these questions do not offend anyone!

Hello! Welcome, though you're late to the party 😛

Anyways, yeah if you go through the discussions, you'd see many of us have raised the same concerns. There were many times the kids dances wandered out of the child-friendly line. For some reason twerking and belly are encouraged a lot on this show. Tbh not as much this season, I mean, in SD2, we had a kid whose super move was twerking and she'd make every guest twerk with her. It was considered cute 🤡

And yeah many times the romantic angle came to play as well. Mostly in Aryan-Anshika's acts, sometimes in Sanchit-Vartika's, and once or twice others have also tried the same concepts. I guess seeing these kids and gurus off-screen, it doesn't hit me as hard like you said, but I did find many such instances inappropriate as did our fellow forum members.

Btw, iirc Cuties had many other criticisms as well, not just inappropriate dances. So I wouldn't say that's a fair comparison.

I completely disagree as they are performers so should be able to perform as any character.

Why not enjoy and get entertained, why do these questions even come up in your mind?

Probably. But it is weird to see couple concepts between a literal child and an adult. Remember Aryan-Anshika's Shaadi Special act? Aryan was mindblowing in it, no doubt, but ughh the concept of a tadapta-hua-premi like Robz used to say,, is a little too much. And besides I don't think children should be exposed to such adult matters at young ages. As for inappropriate dance styles, twerking is a sexualized style. Do children really need to be doing it?

it’s a form of dance so think of it as dance. And why should kids not be be exposed?

Dances aren't just dances just like movies/books aren't just any movie/book. They have ratings which keep in mind how much people that age can comprehend. They definitely haven't done something A-rated but that doesn't make it child-friendly. Themes make a huge difference. These kids are too young to understand these things. They aren't even teenagers. They cannot give informed consent which is why they should not be exposed to such things.

Most of us had a problem with this on the EDT when I was active in discussions. The inappropriate forms, and themes are problems in my opinion. I would rather they had a policy on what themes, moves, expressions are appropriate for them to show.

Completely disagree with the comments…you are curbing art and it’s forms - if they don’t understand it it’s fine - a lot of kids play adults in drama classes and some forms of dances teach them all kinds of expressions.

This is the first result that comes up while googling twerking -

The dictionary describes twerking as dancing "in a sexually provocative manner, using thrusting movements of the bottom and hips while in a low, squatting stance"

Of course you can say it's art and everyone should be free to indulge in all sorts of art no matter the age. And in the end it might be perceived according to the viewer. But sexualizing kids will only rob them of their innocence prematurely, not to mention how it would attract pedophiles. Why do you think child p0rnography is banned? It's not just because of child labour, but also for moral reasons. There was actually a huge issue in SD3 over Rupsa's performances. Sony received an advisory from the ministry to not encourage vulgarity. Here's an article that came on Times -

I'm positive the art forms will remain intact even if only adults partake in it. And even if art forms are curbed, I'm more concerned about the children than the art. There is a difference in between labour and child labour, p*rn and child p*rnography, and just like that performers and child performers. In my opinion they are being robbed of their childhood innocence.
