Transcript of LIVE CHAT with TV actress, Prachi Shah at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 7 , 2005 in Mumbai

Prachi Shah
TV actress

"In the present trend of movies it is very difficult for a classical dancer-cum-actress to make a place in Bollywood. In times of Vijayanthimala and Hema Mailni, the fashion (of movies) was more Indian."

Meena > Hey Prachi, why did you leave Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabi Bahu Thi ?
Prachi Shah > Well, I was not too happy with my character's graph, and the story relating to my character.

Reddi > Dancer, actress, TV presenter- which one of these do you enjoy the most and why?
Prachi Shah > Dancer because that is what I have actually grown up with since the age of five. When I perform on stage, I get the immediate response of the audience.

Rahul2005 > You have worked with Nana Patekar! How was the experience of working with him? I am told he is very rude.
Prachi Shah > It has been a wonderful experience working with him. According to me, he has been misunderstood as a person by the media.

Rahul2005 > Don't you think that all good things must come to an end and so must Kyonki Saas ...?
Prachi Shah > Yes, it should. According to me, you should always leave good memories with the viewers.

Clod > Do you think a dancer can make a place for herself in Bollywood and on TV. Actresses like Vijayanthimala and Hema Malini were just exceptions and there aren't many like them (today)?
Prachi Shah > I would say in today's trend of movies it is very difficult for a classical dancer-cum-actress to make a place in Bollywood because the entire trend and value systems have changed. If there are ten movies (made) then out of them only one movie is like Devdas (traditional) and that happens once in a blue moon. In times of Vijayanthimala and Hema Mailni the trend of movies was more Indian.

Ramu > In the current scenario, where trance music and modern dancing has taken place and item numbers are so popular in films and slowly TV is also falling prey to it. Do you think classical Indian dancing has a place in entertainment field? Please answer honestly, without patronising or taking sides...
Prachi Shah > Well, as I said, it is difficult now for any Indian classical artiste to make a place in the entertainment field as there are very few youth interested in it.

Jigs > Are you spiritually inclined?
Prachi Shah > Yes, I am.

Kali > When is your birthday? What are your hobbies? Where are you from? Are you a Gujarati or a Marathi?
Prachi Shah > Birthday is on 12th of December. Hobbies- dance, playing sitar, singing and I love watching movies. I was born in Pune and brought up in Mumbai. I am a Gujarati Jain and my mom is a Maharashtrian.

Gal28 > Why do you keep such a low profile? We hardly see you on Page3 of newspapers. Shouldn't an actress be heard and seen in public, to maintain her popularity?
Prachi Shah > Well, my colleagues and friends have told me that I am featured very often in the Bombay Times. Thankfully, it's not for the parties that I attend but for what I have achieved.

Katy > Are you married?
Prachi Shah > No, I am not married.

Ronie > Where did you learn classical dancing? Do you also plan to start your own school one day? Do you teach dancing? Would you like to teach dancing?
Prachi Shah > I learnt from my guru (late Pandit Madan Kumar. A year ago, I started a dance school named, Prachi Nitya Niketan at my home at Andheri (Mumbai). I have two students.

Mehak > How did you get into this field?
Prachi Shah > I had won a contest called Miss Teen Bombay (when I was 17) where I got my first photo session done (courtesy some gift vouchers that I had received as part of my winning the title) I circulated those pictures and got my first call from BR Films. It was for a mythological serial called Amar Chitra Katha in which I was playing the part of Goddess Parvati.
