The culprit in weight gain is Insulin. The key is to eat low GI foods that don't spike your insulin. Fats are not the enemy, Sugar(Carbs) is.

I'll add another piece of advice to add to this--try and cut down on white rice, white bread, etc and opt for whole grains. They are low GI and don't cause sudden sugar rushes.
Sugar is a culprit indeed and it's best to be avoided.
