Archery

A different year and another Olympics, but for Indian archers, the target will be the same -- fetching their first ever medal at the Games.

For the first time after London 2012, India will have a full six-member squad after both the men's and women's teams qualified on the basis of rankings. This means they will compete in all the five events.

Each archer will shoot 72 arrows and the scores in the qualification round of 128 athletes from 53 countries will decide the seeds for the main knockout competition beginning with the women's team finals on Sunday.

The opening ceremony is orchestrated by renowned stage director Thomas Jolly, who has invited a stellar cast of local and international stars to celebrate the rich history and diversity of French musical culture.

So what are the big names on the lineup?

Aya Nakamura, France’s most listened-to singer, will be performing a Charles Aznavour classic, accompanied by the Republican Guard. Queen of ballads Céline Dion will serenade with a song by Édith Piaf, and American pop sensation Lady Gaga will also grace the Olympic stage.

A feast of French musical talent will take to the stage. In terms of collaborations, expect a duet between pianist Sofiane Pamart and singer Juliette Armanet, a B2B set featuring singer Philippe Katerine and drummer Cerrone, and an intriguingly ‘original’ collaboration between opera singer Marina Viotti and eco-metal band Gojira. Parisian rapper Rim'K, from hip hop band 113, will also make an appearance.

Taking place along a 3.7-mile stretch over the Seine, the Olympic opening ceremony will be hosted by Mike Tirico, Kelly Clarkson and Peyton Manning. The festivities will feature nearly 100 boats carrying more than 10,500 athletes and performers, with the flotilla passing Nôtre-Dame, the Louvre, the Grand Palais and other historic landmarks before ending across from the Eiffel Tower at the Trocadero. It marks the first time that the Olympics opening ceremony won’t be held in a stadium.
