Highlights of the first day


Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci took a 6-4 3-6 6-3 lead over 14th seed Ben Shelton of the United States before the match on court 18 was suspended due to darkness.

Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova stunned Roland Garros semi-finalist and 24th seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia with a 1-6 6-3 6-2 win.

Italian Jannik Sinner, the world number one and top seed, overcame a third-set wobble to beat Germany's Yannick Hanfmann 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3.

American Tommy Paul, the 12th seed, overcame Spain's Pedro Martinez 6-2 6-1 4-6 6-3. Former U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu claimed a 6-4 6-2 win over Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.

World number two Coco Gauff advanced to the second round with a convincing 6-1 6-2 win over compatriot Caroline Dolehide.

Fellow American Emma Navarro, the 19th seed, had no trouble overcoming China's Wang Qiang 6-0 6-2.

Italy's Lorenzo Sonego beat Argentinian 31st seed Mariano Navone 6-4 7-6(2) 6-4 to reach the second round.

Kazakh 23rd seed Alexander Bublik fought back from two sets down to defeat Jakub Mensik 4-6 6-7(2) 6-4 6-4 6-2.

British wildcard and former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu beat lucky loser Renata Zarazua 7-6(0) 6-3 to reach the second round, where she will face Belgium's Elise Mertens.

French 16th seed Ugo Humbert beat Kazakhstan's Alexander Shevchenko 6-1 4-6 7-6(2) 6-7(3) 6-1. 1640 OSAKA BEATS PARRY

Four-times Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, playing in Wimbledon for the first time since 2019, beat Diane Parry 6-1 1-6 6-4.

Qualifier Lulu Sun, playing in Wimbledon's main draw for the first time, has stunned Chinese eighth seed and Australian Open finalist Zheng Qinwen 4-6 6-2 6-4.

Last year's quarter-finalist Madison Keys beat Martina Trevisan 6-4 7-6(4) to reach the second round, where the American 12th seed will face China's Yafan Wang.

Belarusian 16th seed Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn due to shoulder injury ahead of her first-round match against Sloane Stephens. Azarenka has been replaced in the draw by lucky loser Elsa Jacquemot.

Defending champion and Spanish third seed Carlos Alcaraz beat Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal 7-6(3) 7-5 6-2 to reach the second round. 1426 PAOLINI BEATS SORRIBES TORMO

French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini beat Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-5 6-3 to reach the second round, where the Italian seventh seed will face Germany's Greet Minnen.

Last year's semi-finalist and Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev beat American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3 6-4 6-2.

American Brando Nakashima stunned Argentinian 18th seed Sebastian Baez, beating him 6-2 6-3 6-4 in the first round.

Chinese 32nd seed Zhang Zhizhen defeated Frenchman Maxime Janvier 7-6(4) 6-3 6-2 to reach Wimbledon's second round for the first time. Zhang will play Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff next.

Former quarter-finalist and Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina breezed past Zhang Shuai 6-3 6-0.

American 29th seed Frances Tiafoe reached the second round, beating Italy's Matteo Arnaldi 6-7(5) 2-6 6-1 6-3 6-3.

Ukrainian 18th seed Marta Kostyuk beat Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova 6-3 6-2 to reach the second round.

Former semi-finalist and Bulgarian 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov beat Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 6-3 6-4 7-5 to reach the second round.

Australian Open semi-finalist and Ukrainian 28th seed Dayana Yastremska beat Argentina's Nadia Podoroska 6-1 7-6(1) to reach the Wimbledon's second round for the first time since 2019.

Former quarter-finalist and 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Taylor Townsend 7-6(4) 6-1 in the first round.

Greek ninth seed Maria Sakkari served five aces as she brushed aside American qualifier McCartney Kessler 6-3 6-1 to reach the second round.

Tunisian 10th seed Ons Jabeur had no trouble getting past Japan's Moyuka Uchijima 6-3 6-1.


Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki claimed a 6-2 6-0 win over American Alycia Parks in the Dane's return to Wimbledon after four years.


Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva reached the next round as she knocked out former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber of Germany 7-5 6-3.


Greek 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas shook off Japan's Taro Daniel 7-6(5) 6-4 7-5.


Danish 15th seed Holger Rune made an impressive start to his campaign, beating South Korean Kwon Soon-woo 6-1 6-4 6-4.


British number one Katie Boulter booked her place in the next round after a hard-fought 7-6(6) 7-5 win over German Tatjana Maria.


Fresh off her French Open triumph, top seed Iga Swiatek began her quest for a maiden Wimbledon crown with a 6-3 6-4 victory over American former world number four Sofia Kenin.


Latvian 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion and 2018 Wimbledon semi-finalist, eliminated Australian Ajla Tomljanovic after a dominant 6-1 6-2 win.


Anna Kalinskaya, the Russian 17th seed, comfortably beat Hungary's Panna Udvardy 6-3 6-2.


Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev fell to a 6-4 5-7 6-2 7-6(5) loss to 23-year-old Argentine Francisco Comesana, who was making his Grand Slam debut.


Second seed Novak Djokovic, seven-times Wimbledon champion, made a winning return from a knee injury, defeating Czech Vit Kopriva 6-1 6-2 6-2.


German fourth seed Alexander Zverev brushed aside Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2 6-4 6-2.


Lucky loser James Duckworth tested fellow Australian Alex de Minaur, but the ninth seed ultimately prevailed 7-6(1) 7-6(3) 7-6(4).


Seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz rallied from a set down to beat Radu Albot of Moldova 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-4.


Marketa Vondrousova became the first women's defending champion in 30 years to fall in the Wimbledon first round after the Czech sixth seed was beaten 6-4 6-2 by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain. Steffi Graf is the only other women's champion to perish in the first round since tennis turned professional in 1968.


Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina had little trouble in beating Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse, sealing a 6-3 6-1 victory.


Fifth seed Jessica Pegula made light work of fellow American Ashlyn Krueger 6-2 6-0 to advance to the second round.

Norwegian eighth seed Casper Ruud, a two-times French Open finalist, tumbled out after being beaten 6-4 7-5 6-7(1) 6-3 by 37-year-old Italian Fabio Fognini.

Carlos Alcaraz continued his title defence with an impressive 7-6(5) 6-2 6-2 victory over Australian Aleksandar Vukic. Up next for the 21-year-old three-times Grand Slam champion is American Frances Tiafoe.

Former Ukrainian world number three Elina Svitolina, a semi-finalist last year, booked her place in the second round with a hard-fought 7-5 6-7(9) 6-3 win over Magda Linette of Poland.

Danielle Collins, the 11th seed, beat Clara Tauson of Denmark 6-3 7-6(4) to advance to the second round. The former Australian Open runner-up, 30, announced in January she would be quitting the sport in 2024.

Fellow American Frances Tiafoe also progressed to the third round after defeating Croatian Borna Coric 7-6(5) 6-1 6-3.

American Christopher Eubanks, who reached the quarter-finals last year, suffered a 6-4 6-4 6-2 loss to Frenchman Quentin Halys.

American second seed Coco Gauff, the U.S. Open champion, secured a comprehensive 6-2 6-1 victory over 19-year-old Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni to reach the third round.

Twice Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will team up with 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu, 21, in the mixed doubles after the British duo were awarded a wildcard. Murray is also competing in the men's doubles with his brother Jamie, a seven-times Grand Slam doubles champion, after pulling out of his singles opener against Czech Tomas Machac on Tuesday due to a back problem.
