This is a review which I had written last November after SS got over. Hope you like it.
AN OVERVIEW OF SS
Special Squad is something I thought, must be on the lines of CID. Clearly, I was mistaken, it was something which was a lot more. Set up by the Police Commissioner of Mumbai, Special Squad is a crack team of dedicated and brilliant homicide investigators and forensic specialists. They solve the most meticulously planned crimes through forensic detection. What makes the show different is that it also deals with the personal lives of the squad members, how they to have their own share of trials and tribulations in their lives.
The team is led by Aryan Khanna (played by Bhanu Uday), who is the protagonist of the show, he is an IPS Officer who has never failed to solve a case, except one, the murder of his own wife, Niharika and daughter, Pallavi. He is obssessed with that one failure, it has driven him to the point of obsession to solve all crimes. Aryan is a very complex character who has certain principles in life and is basically a very simple guy, yet it is his simplicity that makes him so intriguing a person. He is a guy who relies on his gut-feel, he is quiet but highly intense and observant. Some of his colleagues in the police force thinks he needs to undergo psychiatric treatment. His character has developed as the series progressed and we see various sides to him and that he can be funny, naughty, child-like and romantic as well. Bhanu Uday has dome complete justice to the character of Aryan.
Then, there is Shaina Singh (played by Kuljeet Randhawa), who is the criminal psychiatrist of Special Squad, she is Aryan's right hand. She is a firebrand in every sense of the word. She is extremly hot-headed and Aryan is the only one who can calm her down, she often jumps to conclusions about supects and is a brilliant interrogator. She too, has a past, her husband left her for a younger woman and ever since she's been a fiercely independent person. She is extremely confident about everything except her son, Sunny. She is always wondering whether she is able to give him enough time or not. But, overall she efficiently juggles a demanding career and the job of a single mother. She enjoys a very good professional relationship with Aryan and there is a romantic angle as well, the chemistry between Aryan and Shaina is simply sizzling. The entry of Deepika Ghosh triggers off Shaina's insecurity and possessive attitude towards Aryan.
Deepika Ghosh (played by Gauri Pradhan) is diametrically oppposite to Shaina Singh. She is extremely organised and disciplined. She follows each and every rule and law, by the book. She likes everything done as per the legal procedure. She wants Special Squad to be more organised, was appointed as Acting Head, initially, she goes on to lead Special Squad superseding even Aryan. She is appointed Forensic Head after Ved Rahi's (played by Paritosh Sand) exit from the series. Her romantic relationship started when she was kidnapped by Bomber. They normally share an argumentative friendship and go on to share a silent romance that builds up into chemistry. She also partly mothers the rest of the quad telling Aryan not to drink too much of coffee, insits that all of them do not work overtime, etc.
Ajay Desai (played by Pankkit Thuckker) is the in-house casanova who's ex-girlfriends keep surfacing out of nowhere, he's an absolute flirt until he falls for Neha (played by Manawa Naik), the computer expert at SS. She seems very docile and shy but is really senitive about issues where women have been ill-treated. She has a deep, sexy and charming persona behind her nerdy looks. She left her home as she was tired of her father's abusive behaviour.
Boxer (played by Iqbal Azad) was a criminal himself at a point of time, he grew up on the wrong side of town, but is absolutely aggressive and street smart, knows all the criminals in town and is an extremely useful and reliable source. Boxer and Ajay are collectively known as the chachu and mamu of SS. Their antics could make one laugh. Zubin Driver (played by Farzil) is the photographic expert and sketch artist at SS. He wants to make it big in National Goegraphic and is geeky and lean Parsi lad. At first sight, he seems like a really sonfused guy, he is the butt of all the jokes at SS, as everyone thinks he takes up too much time.
Jogi is the pathologist at SS, he's a sweet old man, who's a jolly fellow but has an alcohol problem. His wife has been living in a state of denial as his daughter married a Muslim boy. A tough guy with a heart of gold and is lovingly called Pappaji by the rest of the squad. Ved Rahi was the Forensic Head at SS but, got chucked out after being found guilty for having framed Aryan. He was a strict old man was called Ved saab by everyone else except jay who loved to tease him by calling him uncle, Ved is a crusty old man who takes a lot of pride in his profession. He wants his daughter Priya (played by Smita Malhotra) to be the best , Priya is the Assistant Pathologist at SS, Ved loses hope when she gets murdered in the fifth episode. Priya is a gem of a daughter and loves her father a lot, only she has a problem with his constant nagging.
Shotgun (played by Raj Banerjee) is the latent and prints specialist at SS, he is a grim but intelligent guy who tends to look down on investigators and believes that forensics helps to solve cases, but it never gets its due recognition, he had a brilliant career at Scotland Yard, but had to chuck it since, his mother couldn't adjust to the climate there, he's kind of rude and proud but the whole squad tolerates him as his inputs are crucial to the cases. He is often found conversing in Bengali with Deepika, which Aryan finds irritating as he can hardly understand any of it.
Special Squad deals with crime investigation from the forensics point of view. Also the show focuses on the squad members' personal lives which makes it all the more interesting. A great show with minor flaw here and there but is overall great in presentation and style.
