Episode Two

Special Squad Rocks. We've known it for a long time now and it's time to relive the heady giddiness at the mere beats of the opening track.

A) THE CASE:

The case is satisfactorily presented. A dead intern, two suspects-both girls. In typical SS fashion, each evidence raises the pros and cons of the suspect only to unveil as a third person as the murderer.

Case Synopsis (from the archive):

Place: M.G.Medical college bathroom

Time and Event: 11:00 p.m.-Fresher's party

SS Team : Aryan, Shaina, Boxer, Ajay, Neha, Papaji, Zubin, Ved Sahib, Vivek

Note: Ved Sahib is kept away from the case

Case victim: Jayesh-A passed out from SS,first rank,to join SS

Case Suspects:

1. Maya-a fresher in the college,

Reason: Was ragged and insulted by Jayesh

2. Priya-a passed out from college,same as Jayesh's Batch-second rank

Reason:Next choice to Jayesh to join SS

Case Synopsis:

Characters:

Vivek: A new entry in SS team, Commisioner's nephew-Trainee Investigating Officer

Meenal: Priya's Friend

Bobby: Loves Maya one sided,a rough sort of guy

People at first Investigation : Meenal,Priya

Other characters: Some friends of Jayesh

Killer: Bobby

Motive: To take revenge on Maya, for not accepting him.

Highlights: Q and A interjections at the discussion table. The technique helps in balancing of theories and suspects.

B) THE CHARACTERS

a) Ved Sahab

I start off with Ved Sahab as this episode does a lot to characterize him. We have to remember that this is the second episode and we have yet to know the characters intimately. Ved Sahab comes across as a slightly pushy father. Earthy and realistically portrayed.

Highlights: At the relevation of Priya's friend that she is distraught at not getting into SS, last sequence-thanking Aaryan and offering Neha a book

b) Shyna

Shyna has an extremely forcful presence. Her expressions, the rotating pencil and her stance are the best features of her character. Her tone is snappy and clipped. She is yet to obtain a definite ground for characterization but she anchors the episode.

Highlights: Watching Aaryan through the glass, worried about him.

c) Ajay Desai and Neha Nair

Neha's role varies in the series. She is first a field investigator plus technical consultant, but later sticks to the office. Neha's character gains balance in the episode. Her retorts at Ajay and her interrogation of Maya is interesting. Ajay establishes himself as a cool dude with an attitude you hate but makes you warm up to him.

Highlights:

Neha: Talk with Maya, banter with Ajay

Ajay: attitude with Vivek, the autopsy room scene, flirting with the staff at the water body

d) Shotgun and Boxer

Shotgun is more relaxed than in the episodes before Deepika. His demeanour changes a bit after a few episodes -anger, irritation and refusal to believe in the merits of field investigation. Meanwhile, Boxer is a bit uptight now, but loosens over the episodes. His air of importance drifts away in the succeeding episodes and he no longer participates in the interrogations actively. Makes me wonder why.

Highlights: Talk with Aaryan and Vivek in the pantry, leading Vivek to the autopsy room and leaving him there

e) Papaji and Zubin

Papaji is one of the best characters to have around. He is irritated and quirky in the morning but warms at the day passes. Zubin is more of an accessory character. One thing I noticed is that he calls Aaryan 'Sir' as opposed to only 'Aaryan' in the later episodes.

Highlights: Papaji's scene with Vivek in the lab regarding C2H5OH. (Really, how dense can one get?)...Zubin's scene at the discussion table regarding the sandwich

f) Aaryan Khanna

Aaryan's demeanour is quite calm as opposed to the passionate outbursts in the later episodes. The episode hinges on the entire team, rather than only the chief. I like that. Niharaka and Pallavi's death continues to chase him...

C) UNRESOLVED ISSUES:

How does Bobby come to know that Jayesh mistreated Maya?

D) SOCIAL ISSUE:

E) LOVE:

Cinematography and Filming, background scores...

F) The Wardrobe

Shyna: 1) Black striped jacket with white singlet and black pants
2) Black half sleeved button down shirt with jeans

Neha: 1) White sweats


G) The Dialogues

Scene: The Autopsy room, after discovering unconscious Vivek
Ajay: Hello...Main hoon Bhagwan Indra aur ye hain meri apsara Neha...
