Lakshman sat outside the small hut in the lone forest. Ram and Sita slept inside peacefully. Still, 10 years of their Vanvaas was left. He thought to himself,"Had I brought Urmila with me, I don't think she would have caused much of a problem. Yes, she would have a problem to adapt to all this, but then she is the sister of Sita, the daughter of Mithila, and the daughter in law of Ayodhya too. She is my wife. Of course she could have adapted to this. But then, she is not as quiet as Sita Bhabhi. Oh, she would constantly talk and chatter. Not letting me rest." A tear escaped Lakshmans eye, a tear of pain. "But then now, I have put her to a complete rest.." Thoughts from a time which seemed far back now struck his mind again. They struck his mind every night though. ..
Lakshman walked through the corridors of The Palace of Ayodhya angrily. How dare Mata Kaikeyi do this? How can she have such a change of heart? How can she think of breaking a family? No, he couldn't let this happen. He couldnt let Ram go alone. He had to go with him. Maybe then, Kaikeyi would have a change of heart and call them back. But no, as Ram, Lakshman and Sita had changed into the forest dwellers state, she didn't react. She remained still. Urmila controlled her tears as much as she could. She was now the anchor of the family. After Sita left, Mandvi now had to take up the responsibilities of the queen, leaving her and Shrutkirti alone to look after the devastated elders. As Ram and Sita took blessing from the teachers at the palace gurukul, Lakshman walked out into the massive garden of the Mahal and sat to penance. A thought was disturbing him for a long time. Now, he thought of executing it, that because he was to follow his Bhaiiya and Bhabi into the forest. He prayed deeply, and recited the Vedic Mantras with ever the more energy.
He prayed to Lord Nidra, lord of Sleep. Within a few moments, hearing his deep plea, appeared the Lord. Lakshman opened his eyes and seeing the dark haired Lord pleaded to him,"Please, give me a way to stay awake for these 14 years of exile, so that I can protect my God like Brother and Mother Like Sister in Law from the dark clutches of the forest." The Lord laughed. Lakshman was stunned at seeing this. He asked the Lord, "Lord, have made any mistake at which you laugh?" The Lord replied in a voice only to be heard to him,"No. The way is with your better half itself. Go to her, she will tell you." And he disappeared. What could Urmila possibly know about this?, he thought. He rushed into his grand room which he would never for the last time, only to find his wife Urmila sitting in front of the huge mirror and wiping her tears. He walked up to her slowly from behind and she looked up. Lakshman couldn't match his eyes with her; he thought he was committing some crime by leaving her. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't. Urmila smiled, with her teary eyes, and got up to face him. Lakshman looked up to her, finally, and asked,"Urmila, actually I performed,," "You performed a penance to Lord Nidra to help you find a way to protect Jijashree and Didi, I know. And this is something I know more than you. I am your wife, nobody understand you better than me." Lakshman was dumbfounded. Really, she was his philosopher and guide, and would be all through life. He held her arms lightly and asked with a breaking voice,"So what do I do?" Urmila smiled, letting a tear escape. She gave a deep breath and said,"You don't have to do anything . I did it. " Lakshman looked at her in a questioning way. She continued,"I asked the Lord to take the sleep of the night away from you and give it to me. In turn, he has given all my energy to you. So now, you will have the energy to be awake, both night and day." Lakshman didn't understand how to react to this. Yes, it was what he wanted, but not in the way he wanted it to happen. He held her tightly and asked,"But what about you Urmila?" She placed her head on her husbands chest and said,"I will die without you if I stay awake and alive. As I give my energy to you, I will control over myself for the next 14 years, I will go into complete subconsciousness. I will dream my memories with you, and will be awake only when you return. " Lakshamn yelled,"NO!! Don't pay such a big price for this! You already have done a lot Urmila, now please dont give up 14 years of your life for me." But it was too late. Lakshman didn't realise that as soon as Urmila touched him, her power had gone into him. And now she was drained, and Lakshman held the lifeless, motionless, though ever smiling body of his wife in his arms. He cried and sobbed loudly. But then, he heard the footsteps of his brother coming. He wiped his eyes and placed her on the bed. He placed a light kiss on her forehead and went off, not turning to see her again and shut the door behind him..
Lakshman cam back to the present as a small bee bit him on the toe. Everything was the same here. Maybe back there too, he thought. He felt proud and smiled on the very thought that he had a wife like Urmila and that as generations would come, they would be immortal. He reminsised the words of a Saint who had crossed his way once that,"Tum to vishwa ke sabse acche bharata ho. Parantu, yadi sansaar mein kisi stri ka apne prem ko tyagne ka sabse bada udaharan hain, voh hain tumhari PATNI Urmila...
