1.Jyotirlinga Once upon a time Lord Brahma and Vishnu were engaged in a great argument about who was the better among them. Lord Shiva intervened and produced a huge beam of light (Jyotirlinga) which went through the three worlds. Shiva asked Brahma and Vishnu to find the end of the light. Vishnu couldn't but Brahma lied that he did. Brahma's lie was exposed and he was deemed unworthy of worship. Both of them had to accept that Shiva was the greatest. That endless light beam or Jyotirlinga manifested at 12 places in India, which are the Jyotirlinga temples.

2.Samudra Manthan The Universe was in great chaos over the power struggles of the Devas and Asuras. In order to end the conflict Lord Vishnu ordered them to churn the Milk Ocean' to find the nectar of immortality. But a dangerous poison called Halahala was produced which threatened to destroy the Universe. Lord Shiva drank this poison and saved the Universe.

3. Revival of the Moon King Daksha had 27 daughters who were all married to the Moon (Chandra). But Chandra was attracted to Rohini which angered Daksha. Daksha cursed the Moon and it lost its luminance and subsided into the ocean. Due to the disappearance of the Moon there was great unrest in nature. Lord Shiva put the Moon on his head and thus its curse was lifted.


4.Veerbhadra Dakshayani was a daughter of Daksha who wanted Lord Shiva as her husband. Daksha held a Yagna where he invited all the Devas instead of Lord Shiva, who Daksha considered unsuitable. Shiva had still arrived at the Yagna with his ganas. He was not greeted by Daksha and Dakshayani couldn't stand this humiliation. She jumped into the sacrificial fire and this angered Lord Shiva. He manifested as a demon named Veerbhadra and killed Daksha.

5.Sudharshana Chakra- Lord Shivahad the terrific weapon known as the Sudarshan Chakra. Lord Vishnu wanted to get the Chakra and so he worshipped Lord Shiva with a thousand flowers. But since one flower was missing, Vishnu plucked out his own eye and offered it in Shiva's worship. Shiva was impressed by his devotion and offered the Chakra to him.
