Dancing with KJo
Johar will be performing on January 26 on his new show Say Shaava Shaava
Say Shaava Shaava (SSS) the show with Karan Johar and Simi Grewal premiered on Monday night. In the episode that will be telecast on January 26, the director will be doing a jig. He enjoyed the dancing sessions so much that he has become exhibiting his skills at parties. His friends may be poking fun at him but here KJo talks about his latest passion.
We hear you've have become a dance monster?
No way! Obviously you have been talking to Farah (Khan) and she's been spreading these vicious rumours (laughs). It was just a two-minute, fun dance number choreographed by Lollypop that I did for the Say Shaava Shaava Republic Day special. They wanted me to choose between dancing and singing but there's no way I can sing. I don't have the right to even sing in solitude. It's been my childhood dream to dance with dancers on my left and right but if I have done something wrong I beg for forgiveness! How could I have had the audacity to do this? I am blushing at the thought of it.
Apparently now you have started dancing at all functions? Farah's birthday and then her baby shower.
I did not dance at Farah's baby shower. I haven't reached that stage where I am going to dance at every function. I hope my friends can survive my dance.
How long did you take to do the promo?
Half an hour. I rehearsed twice and performed live. I am a natural. (grins)
Now will we see you do shows like stars?
Who will want me? I am a nobody and thank God for that. I would die if I had to do it again and have 40 friends falling off their chairs watching me dance.
Rate yourself as dancer.
I don't have the capability to be marked so I am off the scale. I dance at friends' weddings, parties or birthday parties. I don't have the talent to dance on stage. And I am being real, not modest.
We heard that you asked Lollypop the choreographer to give you tougher steps?
No that's not true. I am sorry but Farah has given you wrong information this time. I am a director's dancer β I follow instructions. I humbly accept guidance and perform to the best of my abilities.
Is there a Hrithik in you, struggling to get out?
(laughs hysterically) No. I think Hrithik's toes dance better than I do! If I had to rehearse every day for the next 40 years I might manage to find solutions for the toughest possible problems ailing this world, but I could never dance like Hrithik. He's the best dancer in the world. I dance for fun. It's about completing one's dreams β I was dying to dance on stage. I have been a writer, fashion designer, chat show host, now I have danced.
What's your next dream?
To make a good film something I haven't done at all (laughs).
On the show you have Simi aunty, off-screen which aunty would you pick as your dance partner?
Farah undoubtedly as she's my senior. (cracks up) I am joking of course! She's the only dance partner I would like to have but now I will have to wait a year if I want to dance. She has three dance partners coming up now.
How about an item song?
Not at all. This was a one thing but I wouldn't have the guts for an item song!
And choreography?
No. Why do that when there are such talented people around me?
Maybe for Farah's next? She says she won't choreograph anymore.
Then I will choreograph her films but I think she will want me more as a babysitter than choreographer.
Your choice for best dancerβ male and female?
Hrithik Roshan and Madhuri Dixit.
SSS is cheesy β you pit your team against Simi's and mouth lines like 'Mere munde tumhari kudiyon ki chutti kar denge'.
It's like a sangeet type of show where Simi is with her boys and me with my girls. I am just being myself. It's a reality show and we can't be real about reality can we now?
Why are our reality shows so cheesy?
Are they? I think they are funny and entertaining. Anyway who are we to sit on our high horse and comment on glamour, glitter and glory as long as it's entertaining? Every reality show doesn't have to be high on aesthetics.
Nach Baliye or Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa?
This year I liked Jhalak more maybe because I watched more of it. I love Nach as a format.
Why TV stars and not movie stars for the show? Did you even recognise them?
I did, actually. My mom watches their shows and sometimes I watch with her but I don't know the contestants personally. The only person I know well is Simiji as we used to be neighbours. I didn't have anything to do with their selection as I am not the creative producer or director of the show.
