Define Gautam Rode?
I'm a very simple guy. I'm not into parties or alcohol. I just do my work, come back home, catch up with my friends over coffee. That's me.
Who is your inspiration from the industry?
I like what Aamir (Khan) does in terms of his career moves the way he has planned his career. I would like to follow that path.
Are you excited about anything currently?
I'm excited about the kind of work that I'm doing currently. I'm a part of the number one non-fiction show Nach Baliye, and then I'm doing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's grand period show. So yes, this gives me a kick.
Have you found your dream girl?
Oh, I'm single right now. About three and a half years ago, I was in a relationship but it couldn't work out.
And what does Gautam prefer doing in his free time? When I have some time, I enjoy watching movies also, trying to cultivate habit of reading. That apart, fitness and me are inseparable since class 10th I've been working out. I've maintained an athletic physique as it suits any role. As a model or an actor, it is important to keep fit and look good. This is something you have to enjoy otherwise with the kind of bizarre working schedules on sets fitness goes for toss. I try to hang out with friends in free time. I've two great friends in showbiz Nigaar Khan and Waseem Sabir. People say it is tough to have true friends in glam world, but I feel it is the same everywhere.
How was your journey went through??
The journey was full of ups and down as I started my career from the college days doing modeling and then got into the Bollywood and did my first movie and then got a break in the TV screen and then moved onto film industry and now my career is going smooth with the television industry.
Tell us Something about your new show??
My next show is Saraswatichandra on star plus, its a new challenge to me as it is the debut serial of ace director and producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali so the work he expect should be upto his mark.
Tell us something about your character in the show??
I will be playing the character of Saraswati the male lead he is indifferently raised by his step mother and yet he grows up and becomes a compassionate person who has lofty ideas.
The female fans have been inquisitive about your lips which they feel have the red color owing the lipstick you wear, is it so??
I am going crazy and feel like screaming from the roof-top that there is no lipstick used. I cannot believe it as even my mother asked me the same question the other day. My answer to my mom was that 'you know I have natural red lips'. I guess the color looks more bright as I do not smoke or drink.
Tell us something about your show's popularity??
It is good considering the fact that the previous show at the same time slot fetched only 1.1. We have had a growth. It is too early to comment on the project's real potential as ideally any show should be given at least six to eight weeks to settle down. The start phase of any daily is taxing and we are breaking our backs at the moment to ensure that our product is good. I am glad to note that the initial reaction has been positive.
How has the response for your current show Saraswatichandra been so far?
It's been really great so far. See, nobody is going to say anything bad on your face. But the thing that I get a good feeling about the show myself, gives me a high. Also, your family and friends will never lie to you, and my parents and close pals have given me positive feedback. So, I'm happy.
How did Saraswatichandra happen to you?
I was doing India's Got Talent when I got a call from Bhansali Productions regarding a look-test for the show. Mr. Bhansali liked my look-test and then, he wanted me to do a mock-shoot. Then, I had a meeting the channel, and then soon, I was on board.
What excited you the most about the soap opera?
I had heard many good things about Saraswatichandra, the film from my parents. Few other people too had told me the story and the character in bits. So when it came to me, I really liked the character and was more than happy to do it.
What was your first reaction when you realized that Saraswatichandra was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut production on TV?
Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes great films. And he was coming on TV for the first time. So when I realized that I would be playing that great character of Saraswatichandra in his telly show, I was super excited.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is synonymous with grandeur. Do you feel under pressure to give your best while being a part of such a grand show?
Not at all. I'm an actor. Acting is my bread and butter, my living. If I feel under pressure about such things, I won't be able to perform well. I won't be able to do full justice to my character. Since this is a show that revolves around my character, I would say that responsibility becomes more, not the pressure.
Have you read the Gujarati novel the show is based on?
No, I haven't. Actually, Mr. Bhansali and the channel have given me enough material to prepare for my role, to do my home work. For an actor, you need pointers and suggestions on your role. You need situations that help you understand your part and do your home work well. I got it all from them. So it's been easy for me to slip into this character. It's a period love story set in modern times.
What preparations have you undergone in order to look the part?
As I told you earlier, the pointers, suggestions and a brief on my role by Mr. Bhansali and the channel helped me prepare for the character. They told me what they wanted from me in terms of my body language, dialogue delivery and all that. The fact that they were pretty clear about how to showcase my character, made my task much easier. I simply followed their instructions and everything fell into place.
Television industry is dominated by female-centric characters. How do you feel to be a part of a male-oriented show?
It's a nice feeling, certainly. I did a show called Lucky, which was also based on my character. So in a way, I feel I'm lucky. Being a guy, getting two shows with central characters where you play the title roles, in the female-dominated TV industry, is sort of an achievement. I don't think it has happened with anyone before. So, I definitely feel blessed to have got to play such strong characters on TV. I try and do as much justice to my roles as possible.
Jennifer Winget plays your love interest in the show. How is your bonding with her?
It's been good. We are getting to know each other better as actors. She's a professional actress and it's always good to have professional people around.
