Celebrities Speak :

Anil Biswas ( Music Director )

Ham aas lagaye baitthe hain... tum vaada karke bhool gaye... ya soorat aake dikha jao... ya keh do hamko yaad na kar...
" Mukesh came to me," says Anil Biswas, "wanting to be second Kundanlal Saigal. He had just heard Naushad record in the voice of Saigal, 'jab dil hi toot gaya' for Shahjahan". So he studiedly cast him in the mould of K.L. Saigal through this song. "Having done that, and on proving a hit, I told Mukesh that we had both proved our point that we could do a Saigal. Now we had, I told him, to prove that Mukesh was Mukesh, the genuine product, not just an imitation of Sai- gal. I had myself cast Mukesh in the Saigal format, and now, I myself brought him out of it with 'jeevan sapna toot gaya', even getting him to sing, in his own distinct voice in the same Anokha Pyar, a snatch of 'yaad rakhna chaand taaron is suhani raat ko'." The raag was darbari, year 1945 and the song brought a still relatively unknown Mukesh to the altar of public fame. On his death in 1976, Anil Biswas said that he lost one of his sons. Noushad ( Music Director )
Dil se mita ulfat ka nishaan... &n bsp; tujhse hamara pyaar kahan... &nbs p; pyaar ka naata tod yahin... &nbs p; geet adhoora chhod yahin... main bhi na gaaun tu bhi na ga...
Was it then Anil Biswas who made Mukesh with "Anokha Pyar"? Biswas certainly put him through his first vocal steps, but then, in the very year in which he claims to have brought Mukesh out of his Saigal trance, Naushad argues that it was he who performed this feat on Dilip Kumar. This is how Naushad argues it came about. Mukesh, says Naushad, had a major drinking problem in his formative years as a singer. "One day," says Naushad, "I caught him drunk during the daytime in Kardar Studios. And I told him: 'Mukeshchand, you've already proved that you can do a Sai- gal. What is it you are now out to prove - that you can out-do Saigal in the matter of drinking too?'" The shot went home. From that point, Mukesh took a firm grip on himself. "He was in tears," says Naushad, "as I offered to demonstrate that he had a voice identifiably his own - that he didn't need to imitate Saigal, or any other singer, to prove his vocal credentials." Raj Kapoor ( Actor )
Ek Din Bik Jayega Mati Ke Mole.
Jag Mein Rah Jayenge, Pyare Tere Bol.
Duje Ke Hontho Ko Dekar Apne Geet...
Koi Nishani Chod, Phir Duniya Se Gol...
Ek Din Bik Jayega...

There was Mukesh - my soul, my voice, I was a mere body. It was he who sang to the hearts of the people all over the world, not me. Raj Kapoor was an image, just a carcass of flesh and bones. When he died, it was destroyed. I felt, there goes my breath, there goes my soul. I know what went away from me. There was a void, a vacuum and then I had to get over it and go on. This is the price an artist pays.

Long Live Mukesh - Long Live His Sangeet.

Lata Mangeshkar ( Co. Singer )
Hothon pe sachchai rahti hai....   ; jahan dil mein safai rahti hai....   ; hum us desh ke washi hain...   ; hum us desh ke washi hain.... &nbs p; jis desh mein ganga bahti hai....
To millions of his fans around the globe Mukesh was a singer of memorable film songs . To me he was much more ! one of the few whose I respected like an elder brother .
In an age when even a little success distorts a person's perspective , Mukesh , despite international fame , was a very humble man . He has left behind him memories of greatness , both as a human being and as a singer .

Singers sincere silent salute . Asha Bhonsle ( Co. Singer )
Vo subah kabhi to aayegi... jab ambar jhoom ke nachega.... & nbsp; jab dharti naghme gayengi.... vo subah kabhi to aayegi....
I used to like him very much because his Hindi was excellent. It was very clear and his pronuncation was excellent. No one could match that. We are Maharashtrians and I think my Hindi has improved because of him. His voice had a speciality. He never imitated anyone, he was an original. Jaane kahan gaye woh din from Mera Naam Joker is one of his classics. Ram kare aisa ho jaye is also worth remembering.

Mo. Rafi ( Co. Singer )

Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya...
" Once, while Rafi Sahab and Noushad Sahab were discussing a song, They were informed that Mukesh had breathed his last in America. Rafi Sahab was stunned. The only words which he uttered were:" Hai kitna achha gayak, kitna achha insaan, kitna pyaara saathi chala gaya ! "

O. P. Naiyyar ( Music Dir. )

Chal Akela Chal Akela...

Mukesh is a handsome,well dressed,and well educated
man.He has pleasant manners. His style of singing is
distinctive and his own. After hearing him sing "Mein
tho ek kwab hoon"from "Himalay ki god mein" tuned by
Kalyanji and Anandji,I went to a dealer's and
purchased the record. It is my strong belief that no
othersinger can do justice to this song as Mukesh has
done. Moreover, I think it is the best song of 1965,
the best sung, best composed, and best written.

Interesting Fact About Mukesh

Sudhir Kakar, the well-known psychoanalyst, has an interesting explanation for Mukesh's popularity. In conservative India, failed romances outnumber successful ones. And Mukesh gives voice to the unarticulated despair of a nation unable to love openly. Hritik Roshan the hottest Indian film star sang a Mukesh song "Kabhi Kabhee Mere Dil Mein Khayaal Aata Hai " in an interview with Simi Grewal on T.V. Sachin Tendulkar had demanded Mukesh's songs cd's during stay at Landmark hotel & listening all of rest time , running their one day cricket match at Kanpur. Happiness comes from the soul's satisfaction, not from the vital's or the body's - SRI AUROBINDO :
Happiness is much more than physical comforts and luxuries. If our mind and innermost self-our Soul- is not at peace, real happiness will never be experienced. Pleasure is not happiness!

The small girl was insisting upon hearing the famous playback singer Mukesh of the Indian Screen- not through discs or tapes, but in person! The girl was an invalid and because of her illness she became more depressed an consequently more demanding.

"I like his voice very much, Mama!" She used to say: "If he comes and sings to me personally I will be cured."

"Don't be silly!" The mother used to say: "have you become mad? He is a very big man...."

"Do you know how much he charges for a song?" Some one said: "He is very busy- always."

"But..... I want him to sing to me!" The girl used to say between sobs.
And as the days passed by her condition became more and more serious.

At last a physician approached the great Artist and told him about the sick girl's stubbornness'.

"Perhaps she would be cure, Mukeshji!"

"Achha!" (ok) said the artist :"I will come today. A little late, but not too late!"

And Mukesh did come and sing to the delight of the small patient and everybody else present in the hospital. Next day he said to someone "I was more happy than the little girl!"
Impression and expression :
One of the classic true stories of musicdom concerns a top-notch classical vocalist, playback singer Mukesh and veteran music director Kalyanji. The singer was leaving the composer's music room after a sitting when the classical luminary entered for a social call. After Mukesh departed, this worthy told Kalyanjibhai, "Look at the irony! What does that man know about classical raag and sur? And he drives a Mercedes and I have to travel by bus!" Kalyanjibhai beckoned the man to sit next to him and asked him to sing Chandan sa badan chanchal chitwan along with the harmonium. The classical singer sang the line, with excessive murki as per his training.

Kalyanjibhai again explained to him the exact notes. Try as he might, the classical maestro could not get the requisite straight and heart-touching rendition needed for this Saraswatichandra classic. Gently, the composer drove home his point by telling him, Ab aap ko pataa chalaa ke woh Mercedes main kyoon ghoomte hain? (Do you now realise why he drives a Mercedes?)

Mukesh was probably the least classically-accomplished among our master-singers, but he has an amazing 90 per cent success record among his songs. According to industry insiders, even K.L. Saigal, Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar were far from highly-trained.

Music is an art first and a craft last, and emotional expression will always win over attempts at calculated impressions.

Concerts of Mukesh

Mukesh in Mauritius -

Popular singer Mukesh, making his first trip out of the country, went to Mauritius, sang to appreciative audiences, became 'quite jealous' of Raj Kapoor from whom he ghost-sings on the screen.

The shy, good people of Mauritius, a large number of them of Indian origin, reports Mukesh, would start asking him a couple of question about himself and then would switch to "endless" queries about Raj.

The Governor of Mauritius and his lady, as well as the Prime Minister, heard Mukesh sing. He was there for 36 days, though originally he had scheduled only 22 days and as many performances.

The theme songs from Raj Kapoor's "Jis Desh Mein Ganga Bahti Hai" was the opening piece of every day's concert. Mukesh thought it a particularly apt choice, not only because he himself came from India bur because most of his listeners had Indian ancestors. They had no more links with land where the Ganges flows. Indian film and film songs were very well known in Mauritius, Mukesh discovered - of his own the "sad" songs were most popular.

On his way back home, Mukesh landed in Nairobi. The plane he left at the airport, he latter heard, developed trouble and could not resume its flight. He was very lucky, Mukesh thought wondering what would have happened if the "trouble" had started an hour or two earlier in the air with himself on the plane.

In East Africa, Mukesh was thrilled by a visit to the Kenya game sanctuary - he "bagged" a lioness with his camera. In contrast to Africa, Mukesh recalled, was Mauritius which

May be it was because he wasn't feeling too well or because he had a premonition of his death, but Mukesh sent an SOS to his son who was vacationing in America to join him in Montreal for the 23rd concert. The show went off well. It was nearing the end. Mukesh was on his last song, his favourite song, 'Jaane kahan gaye woh din...' when he announced that his son would be singing with him. Surprised, Nitin Mukesh stepped out of the wings. After the first antara Mukesh stopped and Nitin Mukesh took over. The words were almost prophetic though he didn't realise it then. The crowds went wild. Mukesh had a smile on his face. His son, he knew, was ready to take over from him. Four days later he was gone. And it was Nitin Mukesh who was singing the song at the next show on August 27, alone.

Mukesh Alwida...

Some Rare Snaps Of The Funeral...

Funeral Coverage :

Bombay, Screen 10 September 1976

Hundreds of mourning fans of Mukesh saw the last journey of the singer in a fifteen-minute programme telecast on August 30 in homage to the celebrated singer.

Besides the funeral coverage, the programme included recorded interviews with Hridayanath Mangeshkar, who was with Mukesh during, the concert tour, Raj Kapoor, whose singing voice Mukesh was more than two decades, and veteran Ashok Kumar who knew Mukesh from the time he began singing for the films in Bombay.

The Hridayanath Mangeshkar interview (done by Sudha Chopra in Hindi) was particularly interesting and touching because it was like a flash-back to the happening in Detroit, where the troupe was scheduled to give its ninth show on August 27, when that haunting golden voice was stilled for ever.

A tape containing the last song sung by Mukesh during the eighth show, which was in Philadelphia, was played and it must have surely touched the hearts of all those who have listened to and enjoyed his singing and all those who knew him well, that song "Jaane kahan gaye woh din" was one of the singer's favourites

APPLAUSE TOO

Hridayanath also wanted viewers to hear snatches of the wild applause that Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar got when they rendered that very popular "Milan" duet, "Sawan ka mahina..." with its very charming recitative prelude.

The funeral coverage was also done well without the usual callous concentration on star faces and the most moving moments was when the camera panned the singer's drawing room full of shelves, lined with trophies and awards won by the singer in his 35-years-old singing career.

And the camera interestingly lingered on a little framed message, which more than sums up the singer's character and philosophy of life. It says : " If you meet a man without a smile, lend him one of yours."

Delhi TV was, for once, quick off the mark, when they immediately reacted to the extremely sad news of the death of Mukesh in the United States of America on August 27. The very next evening they telecast a memorial programme, which very appropriately opened with Mukesh's famous and popular songs, "Ek din bik jayega maati ke mol." For now what's remains is the memory of Mukesh's golden voice and, of course, the many songs that he sang his long career as a play-back singer.

FAREWELL FRIEND

Mukesh, ''Soul'' of Raj Kapoor, recorded his last song for Raj Kapoor's Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram on July 26, 1976 at the Famous Recording Studios at Tardeo—exactly one day before he left for America to join Lata Mangeshkar's U.S.A./Canada concert tour (he died on August 27, 1976 at Detroit, Michigan, in the United States of America). There wasn't any immediate need to do that song (because shooting-wise it was not slated for immediate picturisation) but Mukesh did have it recorded before his departure—and it was a recording which went on into the small hours of the morning.

Always at Famous Tardeo (then under recordist D.O. Bhansali), it was a tradition that a bottle be opened and they drink, listening quietly to the song being played back and discussing it. But that night it was nearly 4 a.m. by the time the recording was over. Music-director Laxmikant excused himself and went home. Raj Kapoor went home. Zeenat Aman (who had also participated in the recording) also went home. And so did Mukesh.

That night the traditional post-recording drink session was not held. But unknown to Raj Kapoor and to any of the others, Mukesh had brought with him a jar of King of Kings and had handed it to John (Raj's factotum), telling him: "You open this for him after the recording is over."

That jar of King of Kings was never opened — until Zeenat Aman came to see Raj Kapoor at The Cottage on the night of September 19, 1976. She had just returned from a month-long sojourn in the U.S.A. and the U.K. Shortly before she arrived, Raj Kapoor asked John whether there was anything to drink at The Cottage. John went inside and returned a moment later, holding that jar of King of Kings. He said: "Mukesh sahab had given it for you. He had brought it, saying: 'Open it after the recording."

That was the last drink "soul" Mukesh and "body" Raj Kapoor could not have together...
