More on Banglar Mukh: Bengali language and culture are embedded in our hearts. They endow us with the impulse and the inspiration to exist, and be what we are. It is therefore the obligation of every Bengali to preserve and protect them. The responsibility of bequeathing our language and culture to subsequent generations is also ours. It is this sense of duty and commitment that encouraged a group of culture-conscious Bangladeshis in 1999 to launch in Sydney the first and only Bengali television program - 'Banglar Mukh'. Banglar Mukh is a non-political, non-communal and not-for-profit organization. Since its commencement five years ago, our program has been in the airwaves of Sydney on Channel 31 regularly every Sunday afternoon at 3 pm showcasing our creative efforts and also presenting recorded programs from Bangladesh. Apart from this TV presence, we have also organized many successful programs for your entertainment. Notable among these were the solo live performance by singer Kanak Chapa in 2000, a show presented by the 20-member cultural delegation of the Bangladesh government in 2001 and above all we ware privileged and honoured to present the living musical legend of the sub-continent, Runa Laila, along with film celebrity, Alamgir in the magnificent Opera House of Sydney. Together they have put on a musical extravaganza especially created to keep all audiences spellbound throughout the evening inside the Sydney Opera House, a masterpiece in its own right. It will not be out of place to mention that Banglar Mukh is the only Bangladeshi organization to organize a program in the Opera House and we are indeed proud of that. We sincerely believe that with your continued support and cooperation, we shall be able to successfully initiate and implement several programs planned for the future and be able to effectively project our rich language and cultural heritage to the world. We are also always committed towards the search for new talents here in Sydney and helping them realize their potential. So, if you or your children are keen to participate in any of our programs, please get in touch with us.

We now have great pleasure in presenting next year - on a yet to be disclosed date in 2005 - in another magnificent venue of Sydney, The Hills Centre in Sydney's West -- the legendary and the last of the great mass singers and the only great ballad singer alive in India Dr Bhupen Hazarika and his team.

s

Bhupen Hazarika

BHUPEN HAZARIKA is the multi-faceted genius from Assam, winner of many an award, including the 1992 Dadasaheb Phalke Award for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, particularly through his folk songs.

A distinguished poet, singer, music composer, teacher, journalist and author, Bhupen Hazarika began his film career in 1939, when he appeared as a child artiste. He was in Delhi in 1993 to receive the prestigious National Award from the President and it was during this visit that I managed to meet him and prepare his sketch. A personality to reckon with, meeting Bhupen Hazarika was no problem. In fact, it was a delight to see him in his cap. A sketch of his was got ready as he was meeting mediapersons and answering their questions. He was extremely happy to see his picture and he promptly affixed his signature over it.
