Shreya Shreya Shreya Shreya ANYDAY.
Alka has the tendency to screech at times, quite torturous! But then again, she can also be really pleasant to listen to when she's not her screechy self.
Also,I find Shreya's voice quality much more endearing than Alka's.I just love her melodious voice.I wanna listen to it forever and ever,no matter how boring the song might be.

What (or who?) are these Western and Chinese classicals? Sorry, I didn't get the reference.

As for Alka, she isn't always shrill, and in a fundamental sense, even when she is, it isn't her fault. In fact, some may even consider it a feature. Because even such a magnificent singer as Lata has also been shrill on occasion, for precisely the same reasons. At some point in the 50's, Hindi Film Music evolved a "style" -- more accurately, an affectation -- according to which a heroine's "voice" had to be no lower in pitch than chirping birdsong. That is, at as high a register as could be humanly possible to sing (or even inhuman).

In that department, Lata could deliver where no one else could, and that set the stamp on the industry, and ever since, playback singing for leading ladies' songs has imposed unreasonable demands on the quality of female voices "needed" for them. It was and still is fundamentally a stylistic issue: composers found that Lata (in her prime) could go higher than anyone else, and so they started composing for her higher registers, entire generations of listeners got "trained" to expect precisely that, and entire generations of female singers didn't even consider playback singing unless they could get it up there without breaking into outright falsetto.

But singers like Lata, who could retain bell-like clarity in the upper reaches, are very rare. And yet, singers like Alka generally sing at a register higher than normal, simply because the industry (for basically stupid reasons) continues to demand it. A heroine having a voice like, say, Kesarbai Kerkar, remains "inconceivable" to this day. Which is a crying shame.

Apropos of which, a gooja search of RMIM found some interesting threads...

@ar

You are correct and this was discussed in one of the posts in C2005, where some people living in US told that they made their firends listen to Lata ji's voice (songs of 60s, Lata ji taking fast taans) and invaraibly the friends found it shrill on upper register (like ja ja re ja balmwa: Basant Bahar, first antara -taan-sthyai).

The thread you provided has loads of info and it will take a while to read every thing. but I came across this startling statement of Naushad on that, my goodness when did he say this...??

Naushad might have been ridiculed in this forum for many things including
some of the statements that he has made in the past but one thing that he
said about Asha rings true to me to this day. When asked my Raju Bharatan
is it that he finds fault with Asha's singing he said, "unki awaaz mein
abhi tak woh baazaarupan nahin gaya". Call it baazaarupan, natkatpan,
shokilapan or even nasheelapan, you see one or more of them in most Asha
songs.

again@ar

Reading tons of thread two pints are clear S-J has pushed Lata maimum to the upper register but all including Naushad, Salil and S D burman had their role. Was it because composers wanted this or Lata ji wanted to prove a point is unknown. This bell like clarity was lost later on as lata ji aged and composers stopped making these songs.

Alka ji being an old timer and from the same chool of thought carried on with this tradition. (hence sound shrill)

This is a vast topic and would need further discussion may be initiated by a higher expert like you.

Alka Yagnik has been outnumbered by the more versatile & honey voiced newcomer Shreya Ghoshal. Nowadays, Alka songs can be counted on finger tips, her usual numbers going to Shreya. In award functions also, one does not see a single Alka nomination, whereas for Shreya, we have to wait only for the number for which she is going to receieve the award. Fortunately, for Alka, her good looks & figure comes to her rescue. She has done a makeover & doing modelling to remain popular. Walking the ramp & appearing on magazine covers is certainly a positive way of utilizing free time.

Himani to succeed Sudhini too.

shreya n aging. summerji plz check ur sources. has far as the king knows shreya is very young.

the royal vote goes to shreya. the king states tht shreya is betetr than alka but still has a long way 2 reach kavitaji n chitraji. both shreya n chitra have very feminine voices n suit almost all leading ladies all over india. this is one reason y shreya is popular in the south as compared 2 sunidhi although sunidhi is more versatile.
