Read an article that she was doing pretty good. Good singers will always find a place somewhere. Often Fate has an upperhand.

Alka sounds just fabulous in ' Bakhuda tumhi ho' from Kismat Konnection ... am no Atif fan but the guy manages to amaze with the emotions he brings into his singing ... Alka complements him very well!!! I think she scores over Shreya in these fluffy romantic numbers!
Classical, semi-classical songs ... Shreya no doubt has an edge in these ... She does have a clearer voice and hence harkatein come out well in her voice ...
I just remembered Bela Shende cos she was a guest on the marathi SRGM on TV yday ... very similar voice quality and a very good singer with a classical base as well ... she had won a mega final in the old SRGM ... she has sung a bhajan, 'man mohana' in jodha akbar

I can't stand Alka's voice. Its too sharp and shrill.. I can't stand female vocals like hers in Hindi songs..It hurts my ears and listening to them is like drinking a glass of Karela juice to me, no offense

I ain't a big fan of Shreya's voice either but she is gentler on my ear drums

so i choose her

Ah ha !😆 I love lime juice and red hot chilli. so I am deaf to all the shrills and should. So you like neither. That means you prefer male voices mostly. It is all a personal preterence.
I like certain clear crystal sounds produced by the female vocals, feels refreshing like a strong chilly wind that wakes us up as it coursed through our veins. Or like the melliflous sound of wind chimes.

I think both the singers have wonderful voices and I love to listen to Alkaji's some of the songs (mostly duets with Uditji, and Kumar Sanu). I also agree with some of you about Alkaji sounding too shrill when she hits the upper notes. As far as Shreya is concerned her voice is sweet just listen to the songs from chini kam.

Alka said in one interview she is more from Lata ji's school of music here is what she has to say about the legend:

ALKA YAGNIK (singer):
For me, she's like a member of my family. I've been listening to her songs since I was about four years old. She's like a goddess for me -- someone I've always followed. She has been my inspiration, I've tried to mould my career like hers.
She's perfect -- her voice, the way she sings. Her voice is so beautiful that even if she playbacks for some ordinary-looking actress, her face starts looking beautiful.
She's turning 70, and may she complete at least another 70.
Till today, when I go for work or am travelling in my car, it's not my songs or anyone else's that I listen to. They are always Lataji's songs. She has indirectly been my guru, because I'm still learning from her.
I've met her a couple of times. She's always blessed me and encouraged me. When I was 11 and was being groomed by Kalyanji-Anandji, I'd expressed the desire to watch her record a song. So they took me along for a recording.
The film was Heera and she was singing a song with Mohammad Rafi. I watched her sing and later touched her feet. I still remember what she said to me that day. She said, 'If you want to pursue music, do so. But let me tell you one thing -- finish your studies first!' I was extremely touched and it's something I'd always remember.
I feel there's a glow on her face which is a spillover of her shining voice. Her voice is a very rare combination of purity, innocence, mischief, all rolled into one. The vulnerability that comes through in her voice -- I find that on her face too.
I've heard all kinds of stories about her a lot of them, negative as well as positive. But I maintain that a person whose voice is so pure must have a pure soul. I refuse to believe that such purity does not source from a pure soul. I'm not referring to just her work, that is beyond debate today.
Whenever I'm asked to speak about her, I fall short of words. Every word sounds insipid. How can I express how much I worship and respect her?

well said1 i having grown up in the 90's though I was a kid then have lsitened to a lot of Alka songs and from 2002 just when I was 17 yrs old, shreya dominated. so despite being from the current generation I can compare both...
Shreya has a sweet, melodious voice which rarely hits fasetto. Alka yagnik sometimes sounds sterile if you compare to shreya(in voice quality) Alka's is not over-sweet like shreya's and does not have that angelic tinge which seems to belong to some distant universe. Alka's is more earthly despite being sweet and some of her duets with Udit Narayan are too good(hai mera dil from josh, baahon ki darmiyaan being my personal favourites). So for nostalgi sake I would go for Alka but for overall singing maybe Shreya...but its a tough call
I still prefer Kavita over Alka, Sunidhi over shreya as they are more versatile. However after lata jee My favourite singer is chitra jee who has a beautiful voice and Hema sardesia. Both sadly under-rated by critics and audience. Hema jee has a lilting quality which makes her songs like 'Awwara bhavre' and the recent 'baadal pe paon hai(chak de India) gems of songs

Talking about Nihira, himani, Anwesha and Aishwarya(whom I feel can follow in playback singing)
i see Nihira and Aishwarya singing songslike Shreya and Alka, Himani and Anwesha singing songs like sunidhi and Asha respectively. All 4 rock, and I want to see them making it big
