Just watched the episode. Most of the performances were good, but wasn't Varun Dhawan supposed to be the guest today? πMy, my - what a turnabout by the judges! π² Looks like they've been reading the forum postsπ. Yesterday just singing in sur was good enough to swipe green and today suddenly the criteria have changed? π²
And that comment to Hemant about over-confidence! π
And they seem to have made a 180 degree turn in their voting of the performances. Chetan who got tutaaris for yesterday's performance today got voted down by 2 of the judges while I thought his performance today was, in fact, better than yesterday's.
And how does Afreen group who's been getting tutaaris for every performance suddenly end up with 53%? All that post mortem they did on their performance seemed like crock to me. The 3rd guy did go off sur a bit, but the first 2 were fine. In fact, when they started I thought this might be the one performance of Afreen group that I'd finally like. The fact that they saved them for the last, and the clip they showed with everyone thinking they were the weakest, all added up to shenanigans by the channel to ensure they'd go. When Sanjana talked about Chetan being repetitive, I was like- lady, talk about the pot calling the kettle black!π
Onto my rating of the contestants.
1. Hemant: It sure was hard for me to choose the top performer for the day, but I had to pick Hemant for his vocal range and the way he sang the tricky bit in the antara. I love this song and I love how Sukhvinder sang it. Hemant was awesome, he wasn't flawless, but nearly there. Over confidence might just bite him in the back one of these days. The 89% he got today might drop lower if he isn't careful. He has to remember that he isn't invincible.
2. Akhtar Bros: Finally today they hit their stride! They were wonderful! They brought in the right amount of energy, passion and devotion to the song. I was mighty impressed. The one brother doing an alaap while the other continues to sing the refrain thing that they always do is getting old though. But the harmony they did during the refrain of "Deva Sri Ganesha" was perfect.
3. Zaid Ali: Some of his harkats are unbelievably good. That said, I still think the lack of maturity in his voice makes it tougher for him. That's the problem when you judge solo singers, groups, people of all ages on the same platformπ.
4. Vishnumaya: I wasn't too impressed when she started the song. Like Diljit said I thought she began it on a lower key than she should have. But she impressed me with the last scale change. Just for that, I'm rating her above Rohanpreet. She has a fantastic voice and can carry off any kind of song.
5. Rohanpreet: It's hard not to notice that he's stuck in his comfort genre. I have no doubt he can be versatile if he tries, but who would want to shake the boat when it's sailing smoothly and winning him all the votes he needs? Diljit is right, Hemant's toughest competitor is Rohanpreet by virtue of the solid fan-base that he seems to have accumulated. He sang well, even added his own touches in a couple of places, but he never stretches himself beyond a point.
6. Chetan: I'm not sure why Shankar and Monali voted down for him when they have swiped green and even given him tutaaris when I thought he was bad- like yesterday. Today, I thought he was better than his previous performances. Shankar thought he did well yesterday and in his dard-e-disco performance? π Glad they commented on his shouting, but I thought that comment came a little bit too lateπ.
I do agree with Shankar that sometimes they mix up the inherent energy of the song with the performance and votes get handed out. That is why it's so important to be smart and pick the right songs that will appeal to today's audiences.
7. Afreen Group: I've never been a fan but today their exit seemed to be set up by the channel and the judges. They sounded to me like they always sound - not better, not worse. How then is it that they get tutaaris everytime but today got picked apart by all of them?
The last song by Hemant after Chetan was announced to be safe was tacky and in poor taste IMO. No one seemed to care much that Afreen group had exited. They weren't even given a chance to speak. Instead were subjected to some torturous cross-questioning by Shankar. ππΌ And then followed Ravi's usual bhashan of how so many roads have opened up for them now that they've been on Rising Star!π₯± Coming in the aftermath of the clip they showed with everyone voting for them as the weakest, it certainly seemed like they were made the Bali Ka Bakra today. That said, my top performance by Afreen group was the opening they did today with the Dangal songs.
ETA: Forgot to mention- another thing that I thought was fishy was the way the meter was moving today during Afreen grp's performance and the fact that they seemed to have performed for very little time before the voting closed. Voting seemed to close super early for these guys. π³
