@jenny156: I totally agree with you. The show is becoming little predictable in terms of song selection, I can almost guess what they are going to sing next.
What do you guys think of weekly song genres that are given to contestants. Like for example one week all have to sing party songs, the next week they have to sing folk song etc.? I personally am not a fan of this as it takes out the individuality of the song selection but it may bring in some versitality? Though it might get boring after a while listening to same kinds of songs the whole episode.
Thanks Lissa!! See this is the status quo in most reality shows. The contestants stick to their comfort genres/ zones and things are never about overall versatility but more about how good you are in your genre. This is the era of specialization! ๐ Everyone finds their niche and gets on with doing more and more of the same. It might explain it better of you look at what the ultimate goal of most of these singers is - playback singing in BW. And with a plethora of singers available these days, the composers pick and choose based on the genre of the song - Sufi song hai - Kailash Kher ko le lo, pop sing hai - Arijit Singh ko lo and so on.
Back in the days, that wasn't totally the case. There were only a handful of singers and they had to be comfortable with all genres. Look at a prolific singer like Mohammed Rafi. IMO, he's undoubtedly the most versatile singer EVER, just look at the sheer range of genres he has covered!
The reality shows on singing these days also focus on the fact that they don't need versatile singers. They need specialist singers, if at all. Add to that the public voting that has become the norm in all singing shows. What do the public really know about the nuances of singing? Usually a layman would not know much. He/ she would go by what appeals to their ears in the moment and of course, that is totally ok since the singers sing for public consumption and satisfaction more than anything. But more often than not, public voting is clouded by other extraneous stuff - like where the contestant hails from, what his/her backstory/ profession is. Why do you think the channels focus so much on the contestant's backstory??
I don't know how many of you have watched the very first Sa Re Ga Ma with an extremely young Sonu Nigam as the host. The show's format was so so unlike reality shows these days. There was no audience voting. The judges were the only decision- makers, which may or may not have been a good thing. They would invite stalwarts of the music industry such as O.P Nayyar, Naushad, Pt Jasraj, Shiv Kumar Sharma etc. There would be just 4 contestants in one episode. They would then be put through rigorous testing. First round would be freestyle singing where the contestant could pick the song of their choice. Then would come the really tricky rounds - the "taal" round where the beats of the song would be ramped up or down and the contestant would have to keep up with it. The "sur" round where the pitch/scale of the song would be varied and the contestant would have to adapt accordingly. Then a round of "raag" based songs. Then a judges' choice round where the contestant would have to sing a song picked by the judges. And its all impromptu. The judges would tell them to sing a particular song, they would have no time to prepare, and if they didn't know it they'd be given something else on the spot.
I'm not sure how it works in Rising Star and other shows - if the contestants pick their own songs or have it picked for them by the judges/channel. But in either case, they have a whole week (or maybe more) to prepare and rehearse the song before they actually present it. And some of them don't get it right even after so much practice!
About having weekly song genres - I think it's a good idea. But better still, they can have a weekly theme - like a tribute. The tribute to Sridevi didn't get boring because they could cover so many genres. And it also served to remember a great artiste. I would love it if they did tributes every week - perhaps do a song genre theme on Saturday and a tribute on Sunday. The limitation on song selection that it would impose would be good for the contestants to show their versatility. But then again, is that what the show is really looking for???
