Today was the 2nd part of the Sridevi tribute and they had called in Kavita Krishnamurthy, a singer who's probably done the maximum playback for Sridevi. She was effusive in her recollections of Sridevi and I was especially pleased to hear about the making of Hawa Hawaii and how some of the nonsense lyrics in the opening came about. Truly ... I see Lucy, you see Lucy, Hassi tussi, Lassi Peesi?? Only Sridevi could carry that off on screen 😆
That said, I'm a big fan of Sridevi the actress. Not so much a fan of her songs. So this tribute - although it's the only way a reality singing show could've paid tribute to an actress - fell flat for me in more ways than one. Kavita Krishnamurthy has aged, and it shows in her voice, which she admitted too, which made me respect her humility and her maturity in accepting that she no longer has the same stamina or prowess that she once did. I don't know why but I felt Hemant shouldn't have pushed her into singing Albela with him. She sounded painfully lacking. But hats off to her modesty.
Onto the performances -
My review of today (March 4th) performances again in the order of my rating:
1. Vishnumaya: I know I said Sridevi's songs have never been a major selling point with me, but I make all the exceptions for Hawa Hawaii. It's zany, fun-filled, fast-paced, foot-tapping and Sri's performance elevates a good composition to a brilliant one. Vishnumaya did full justice. I love her voice and I love that she picked this song. I was just waiting to see who would sing Hawa Hawaii and I'm glad it went to Vishnumaya. She deserved her tutaari to the fullest. Not one note out of place and I'm so glad she included the intro which is my favorite part of the song.⭐️
2. Zaid Ali: Gotta hand it to this kid. He's got oodles of spunk and confidence and he shows all of it when on stage. When he started the song, I didn't think he'd carry it off, but I was mistaken. He was just so good. My face mirrored the same look of amazement that was on Kavita's face when he was singing. Simply too good.👏
3. Hemant Brijwasi: I know for most people he'd be on top and I cannot find fault with his singing at all. But--but-- there's more to singing than just technical prowess. I must confess I'm not familiar with the song he sung and perhaps that's why I was unable to connect to his performance. But overall, he's brilliant. His harkats speak of a confident, experienced singer who can pull off anything. He's most likely the top contender to win this show.😃
4. Afreen group: I know the judges praise them to high skies and I gotta admit I was impressed when Shankar pointed out the music they make with just the dholak, harmonium and clapping hands. But for me, they sound the same in every performance. It took me a while to figure out they were singing Main teri Dushman. I know mixing the songs to suit their style takes a lot of finesse, and I can appreciate that, but performance wise, they don't work for me.
5. Shashank: He was competent. That is all I can say. he picked a fairly easy song and he pulled it off with elan. I don't know if he could ever give me goosebumps though.😊
6. Sudeep: I was pretty sure he was going to be bottom today before I heard Sagar. I don't consider him very good, but he's very lucky. Again he was saved today by someone else performing worse than him. The start of his antara had me shutting my ears - I was in pain. 😕
7. Sagar: What can I say? I really wanted this guy to do well. He was bad though. His voice didn't carry and he went off-key so many times, it was unforgivable. I still remember his "Dil ki tapish" during the auditions had given me goosebumps. But since then he hasn't impressed. Dunno if its pressure or something else but so many haven't been able to recreate the same promise they showed in the auditions.
