Hi
all,

This is my first thread on the forum. I have to post about the history of the first and only woman ruler of the Delhi Sultanate - Razia Sultan. I will be writing a limited number of posts but care has been taken to ensure that the contents are well-researched and accurate.

Before starting with the actual history of Razia Sultan, i have provided a brief background of how the Delhi Sultanate was established because many readers may not be aware of it. This would be helpful in understanding future posts related to Razia Sultan.

The post covers the struggle between the Central Asians and native rulers of Hind {that time it included India and Pakistan together}, from 712 AD to 1192 AD. All the major wars have been included here, and dealt with as much briefly as possible.

The post also covers the contest between the Sultan of Ghazni - Muhammed Ghori and the last Rajput Emperor of Ajmer and Delhi - Prithviraj Chauhan III, as that might interest some of the readers.

Pictures of various forts, monuments, coins, rulers, etc. have been included in the article to giving a better understanding of the events.

Later, the important people related to the life and times of Razia Sultan have been introduced. The list of references used in this series has also been included in this post.

The aim of this post to tell it was not easy for Razia Sultan to inherit a kingdom where she had to take on the opposition of her own family as well the political adversaries.

The Link of the post is :

This was perfect Abhay, thank u for starting from the very start itself, this was such a good read, and thanks for including the pix too
King Dahir, i remember my grabdparents mentioning him alot, i belong to Sindh Pakistan and king dahir is quite famous😆
a confusion, were the mauryans before this time or after?
and the CAliph u mentioned, was he Khalid bin Waleed? 😲 gosh this dates way back then.

The mention of Mohd bin Qasim and the start of Islam in the Indian subcontinent.

It was amazing to read about Mahmud Ghazni (i fantasy him)😆

The Fort of Tabarhind ( the same place Razia was captured and imprisoned at)

can't wait for ur next post featuring Razia's rule 😳 i wish the cvs had shown the war of gwalior instead of the stupid tracks they have shown🥱

Wasn't Nasir ud din mahmud who succeeded ala-ud-din iltutmish's grandson, iltutmish's elder son nasir ud din senior's son, who died an early death and who was the malik of oudh 😕

Abhay

Congrats on the new section - Razia Sultan! So happy to see the blog grow by leaps and bounds in just a year. :) And congrats for your terrific debut on the Razia Sultan forum. :)

This curtain raiser post on the events that led to the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate, marking a transition from the Hindu, native Rajput rulers to the Muslim, Arab/Turk rulers, is so wide-sweeping that it will take many readings to understand all the finer details of the geo-politics of that time.

There was definitely a major shake-up of how empires would be acquired and run and also of the culture the common people were exposed to while Hindustan was moving into the medieval era. It would be highly interesting to discuss this tumultuous and event-filled period with history lovers here. :)

Razia Sultan - Just the fact that she was able to break through many barriers and become the first woman ruler of Delhi (even South-East Asia perhaps ?) is enough to fill me with awe and respect for her. She was able to hold her own against brutal men, who didn't spare anyone in their quest for power, for 4 years. It speaks volumes about her capabilities as a sovereign and a power player. Am so looking forward to reading more about this firebrand queen and discussing her rule. :)

Last but not the least, it is gratifying to see so much detail of how Delhi changed with each successive ruler, starting from the Lal Kot of Anangapal.

Thank you for such a lucid and comprehensive post about the setting-up of the Delhi Sultanate!

Thanks Sonu, for this generous appreciation. It is good to see that you found the post helpful.

Of course, King Dahir was from Sindh, and hence he might be famous there at your hometown. If you know more details about him then do share.

I think Pakistan has missiles on name of Ghori and Ghazni too. BTW, I did not think about your nationality earlier, but it is good to have a member from Pakistan also on the blog. The blog now contains readers from diverse areas around the globe which is a good sign.

Are you talking about Khalid ibn al-Walid who was the aide of Prophet Mohammed ? If yes, then he had his allegiance to the Rashidun Caliphate and died in 642 AD. And the person, Al-Walid about whom i talked about was from the Ummayad Caliphate, and he died in 715 AD.

Yes, Nasir-ud-din Mahmud was the grandson only, but his son was given the same name, and Iltutmish brought him as his son. Even historians call him the son only (not grandson) for this reason. Hence, i too took this liberty, though i have specified grandson in brackets now. :)

Mauryans were way before Delhi Sultanate as mentioned by another member also on the blog (check there).

Will be posting future parts soon, as per my schedule ; though i heard that the show is going off air, but i would be posting what i have dug up. :)
