Satyavati was chedi king Uparichara Vasu's biological daughter. Uparichara Vasu had 5 more sons (one of them who was twin of Satyavati was made king of Matsya). The eldest inherited Chedi. The other three were Kings of Malla Vatsa and Magadha.

Satyavati was only sister of 5 powerful kings that surrounded kuru territory on 5 sides.

She had a skin disease at birth that gave her fish like smell hence named Matsyagandha that Parasara father of Vyasa cured in return for giving him a son Vyasa. The reason for her living with fisherfolk

It was only after that she became a sweet smelling lady good enough to be queen of Hastinapur

There was no love there but politics purely

Could it mean that Shantanu actually started avoiding Jahnavi for Satyvati which led to her leaving the palace??

As you had said earlier (and logically so) Satyavati was definitely not married to Shantanu after Bheeshm became an adult

Because throwing away newborn in water seems true to me only if she would have been mentally ill which doesn't seem a possibility here

It's a miraculous story which basically implies that Satyavati and Matsya were born to an Apsara / courtesan who had been disbarred / ostracised for misbehaving with a Rishi.

Children from Apsara was not an issue but from a cursed / ostracised outcast Apsara would be a problem and hence the miracle story

Regarding Balram.

Vasudev was not in a Jail till Krishna was born. He was in house arrest with access to his wives including Devaki and Rohini but under the watch of guards as well as spies disguised as servants.

Balram was Rohini's son. Devaki's seventh was a miscarriage.

Sankarshana or womb exchange was a propaganda to gain Andhaka parentage for Balaram for future coronation. Mathura was ruled by Andhaka. Vasudev was Vrishni Devaki was Andhaka and her son had a claim to throne. Rohini was a Puru princess. Vasudev himself had no claim on Mathura and neither did Balram and that is why Krishna was offered the throne by Ugrasena. And it is for this reason they had to move out as all kings supported Jarasandh's claim that Vasudev and Balram can never be king of Mathura.

Eventually Balram gets Dwarka in dowry which enables Vasudev to succeed Ugrasena but even that was tenuous as Dwarka was just land citizens were all Bhoja Andhaka and Vrishni Yadava for whom only Krishna was eligible to be their chief. Hence story that Balram was actually Devaki's and therefore a vrishni Andhaka too.

Were not Punjiksthala and Urvashi cursed Apsaras too? Why was curse not a problem for them?

Urvashi was never cursed. She first had relationship with Mitra and Varuna and gave birth to Vashishtha and Agastya. She later entered into a consensual relationship with Pururavas son of Budha and had several children with him and later went back to Indra

Punjakasthala was cursed to be a vanara or rather be with a vanara and took the name Anjana, she had Hanuman with Kesari and went back.

Vanara tribes were liberal probably.

Uparichara didn't have other daughters.

Daughters were important instrument for political alliances. If Uparichara had other daughters he may have got them married to Santanu. She was the only one available.

Why did Uparichara accept Satyavati's brother but not her?

Sons were more important I guess

Plus he wasn't facing any such illness maybe

Anyone on this

Why did Shantanu marry Jahnavi? I don't think it could be any random girl approaching his father

I don't think children married in that way

Jahnavi was adopted daughter of Jahnu (erstwhile Panchala royal). Her alliance came for father who refused and tells her she may marry his son. (Like Arjun for Uttara) eventually she managed to attract the attention of son Santanu and married him.

Coming to drowning her sons. Most likely the sons were still born. They were given a water burial. (even now infants are buried in soil or left in river in Hinduism. They don't get cremation as they haven't been done the first samskara)

The final child she must have presumed to be still born as well he however revived but may have been to sickly to expect to continue to live for long. She must have taken him back to her father to help her save him

Eventually Bhishma returns but Uparichara has plans to get Kuru territory consolidated with his children at helm.

On instructions of her father / brother Satyavati then approached Santanu and convinced him for marriage, rest of pressuring and political power play was taken care of by her fathers and brothers
