Q Tell us about your serial, Doli Saja ke.
This is a story about a girl Anupama whom nobody loves because when she was born, her mother died and her father holds her responsible for it. Her father gets married again and she is ill-treated by her step-mother too — like a servant in the house though she belongs to a rich family. On the other hand, Anupama is a sweet lovable girl. There comes a guy in her life (played by Amit Sareen), who gives her immense happiness and eventually marries her. It's nice playing Anupama, as it's a great learning experience for me. Aroonaji knows how to extract the best from her actors and I am happy that I got to work with her.

Q Why is it delayed for so long?
I really do not know. We were looking for the right slot. Kittu was supposed to go off air but now it has got an extension. Then it was slotted for this month but due to the World Cup even that has been postponed. I don't know when it will be telecast.

Q How was it working with Aroona Irani?
Aroonaji always makes women-oriented serials. But this one is dealt with differently. Aroonaji is not only a director but also an actor herself, so she knows what an actor can deliver. She doesn't look at just completing her episodes but also considers the performance delivered by the actors at every shot.

Q Is anchoring a stop-gap arrangement since Doli… hasn't taken off yet?
Nothing of that sort, I enjoy it. While anchoring I can be Barkha, I do not have to be portraying some character. I really like being myself. I will continue to anchor. It takes three hours for an episode and I do 12 episodes in a month. So I shoot only for around 12 days a month. The rest of the days are for Doli Saja Ke.

Q Interested in films?
I do not like running behind producers requesting them to give me a role in films. I'm passionate about acting and if something good comes by in films, I might do it. Some actors dream of making it to films, but I'm happy with television. For modelling, you have to give auditions. I do not have time for that. Moreover I can only do commercials on television. My height is not fit for the ramp but there are many actors who walk the ramp on special occasions. I don't mind doing that.

Another jolt to Aroona's Doli
By: Shaheen Parkar
March 30, 2007

As if constant delays weren't bad enough, actor Anuj Saxena has now walked out of the show after shooting 10 episodes

Inteha Ho Gayi... intezaar ki: Aroona Irani
It looks like this bride and groom will continue waiting for a while longer. Though it has been long-in-the making, there's fresh trouble for Aroona Irani's soap, Doli Saja Ke, slated for SaharaOne.

The inordinate delays have resulted in actor Anuj Saxena quitting the show even before it is slated to go on air by April-end.

Busybody

Saxena has shot for more than 10 episodes, so a re-shoot with a fresh incumbent could prove daunting. It is learnt that Irani has submitted four audition tapes to SaharaOne to pencil in on the replacement.

Says Saxena, "I opted out of Doli Saja Ke out of choice. Presently, I am very busy with other commitments, so it was better to part ways.

My production house Maverick is presenting the film Dulha Mil Gaya (starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen and Fardeen Khan), besides some other projects."

Kahani mein twist

No Time: Anuj Saxena
It is learnt that Saxena had an amicable parting with the channel. Earlier, the actor was seen in SaharaOne's shows like Asha Parekh's Kuuch Pal Saath Tumhara, Raja Mukerji's Prratima and Kinnari Mehta's Solhah Singaarr.

"May be a few months down the line something interesting may come along. I will look at it," adds Saxena who has featured in soaps like Kkusum and Rishhton Ki Dor in recent times.

Doli Saja Ke is a family saga about the trials and tribulations of a father and daughter.

Somewhat similar to the Anil Kapoor film Lamhe, the story takes off after the wife dies giving birth and the father becomes indifferent to the offspring.

Saxena plays the role of the husband who loses his wife (Surbhi Tiwari). The daughter (Barkha Bisht) is considered unlucky and has to live with the curse of being responsible for her mother's death.

Jaya Mathur essays the role of the second wife. Manoj Bidvvai and Arzoo Govitriker also feature in the drama.

Irani has produced shows like Des Main Nikkla Hoga Chand (Star), Rabba Ishq Na Hove and Mehndi Tere Naam Ki (both Zee) and Vaidehi (Sony).

Incidentally, she was also slated to produce Dor, starring Muskan Mihani, for SAB, which never took off despite a long shoot schedule.

'Doli Saja Ke will not replace Kituu'

Off We Go! Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai

Manish Goswami's Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai will be yanked off air next week.

But the new show in the 10 pm slot will not be Aroona Irani's Doli Saja Ke.

Says Kalyan Sundaram, programming head, SaharaOne, "The last episode of Kituu will air on April 6 but we are not replacing it with a soap.

Comedy Champions will air during that hour. Doli Saja Ke will air April-end."

'Indraneil has everything a woman would want in a man'

Barkha Bisht comes clean about her feelings for Indraneil Sengupta.

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Barkha Bisht may have screamed from rooftops earlier about not seeing Indraneil Sengupta, but now, she openly acknowledges that the good-looking model turned actor is more than just a friend. "I wouldn't like to say that we're just friends; that's so cliched," clarifies the dusky beauty, who says that Indraneil and she share a special relationship. "We are certainly more than just friends but beyond that, I can't say much," she adds. As for marriage plans, Barkha believes it is too early to plan for something like that. "I'm not thinking of marriage right now," she says. Not even with Indraneil? "Well, Indraneil is a great guy, he's nice and understanding. He's almost everything a woman would want in a man," is all Barkha's willing to say about her feelings for the man in her life. But even that says a lot! The actor who made a debut on the small screen with Ekta Kapoor's Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi, shared screen space with Indraneil on the sets of Pyar Ke Do Naam, Ek Radha Ek Shyam. The serial went off air a few months back after which Barkha became a Zoom anchor with Popkorn news. "It's good fun anchoring a show because I get to be Barkha Bisht in it and not some character. Earlier I used to get butterflies in my stomach, but now I've got the hang of it," she says. Recently, she acted in Shhh Pphir Koi Hai and says that she had a great time shooting for it. "It was scary because we would shoot late at night and there would be dim lighting on the sets," she recalls. The dusky beauty has recently signed Aroona Irani's new serial Doli Saja Ke, where she would be playing the character of a girl whose father hates her as her mother dies during childbirth. Later, a guy comes into her life and they fall in love. But ask her if she thinks the audience isn't bored of daily soaps and she says, "The Indian audience is not prepared for anything different on television. They crib and criticise the saas-bahu shows but at the end of the day, those are the ones that get the highest TRPs," she says.

Jas Arora replaces Anuj in Doli Saja Ke

It's not that the dashing Jas Arora has not essayed a role of a father on a TV show before. He was last seen in Star's Prithvi Raj Chohan, where he played the protagonist's papa, warrior king Someswar. And now he's been roped in to play papa again to Barkha Bisht in Aruna Irani's Doli Saja Ke for Sahara One.

The role (a cameo of sorts - almost 20 episodes) was earlier slated to be enacted by Anuj Saxena but he recently quit it on grounds of inordinate delays.

Coming back to Jas, he was a rocking model in his hay days and has also tried his luck with Bollywood. Though his films (Dushman, Chalte Chalte and Monsoon Wedding) were a hit, it failed to foster his career.

This tall, fair and handsome hunk still has girls drooling over him. As a papa - maharaja he still is quiet acceptable but as a lovely lady's dad…….we are skeptical, unless he dons some silver streaks.

By A. L. Chougule
An actress for over 40 years, acting is her first love. Most of her experience comes from acting and producing Hindi and Gujarati films for the last six years. Starting with Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, the TRP topper one-hour weekly that enjoyed unrelenting success for over two years, the veteran actress-cum-producer followed it up with two more moderately successful shows, Menhdi Rang Layegi and Rabba Ishq Na Hove.

Currently busy producing and acting in her own weekly show Vaidehi which has been revamped into a daily from November 6, Aruna Irani is all set to work outside her own production banner. The veteran actress will be seen in Ekta Kapoor's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.
Obviously the call came from Ekta.

"She called up to see if I was interested in doing a role in Kahani. I asked for a couple of days to think but before I could say yes another call came from Balaji. I thought I must do it because I am an actress first and I want to do good roles," she says adding "Ekta's success story is amazing. I don't think it's possible for anybody to emulate her success."

It's not just the role that made Irani say yes to Ekta's offer. "Most of the time we live and work in our own world as if nothing exists outside. A closed mind is a sign of creative death. But I have an open mind and want to see how others work. I am really excited about getting into the Balaji camp," says Irani who plays Nayan Tara in Kahani.

"Nayan Tara is like Krishna of Mahabharat who will guide Parvati fight against people who have done injustice to her. It's not a very long role but a cameo that will last for about two months. I could not have done a long character because I am busy with Vaidehi which is becoming a daily.""

Given her age Irani was never comfortable producing and working in a daily. "But circumstances have forced me to get into the grind of making a daily. It's the need of the time. Nobody watches a weekly, no matter how gripping the story is simply because the waiting period is too long for viewer who is used to watching television drama on a daily basis," she reasons.

Irani really seems to be opening up to the opportunities that television is offering. For, she is making another daily show Doli Saja Ke, a story of father-daughter relationship staring Barkha Bisht and Anuj Saxena that will premiere on Sahara One soon.

Aruna Irani's a real perfectionist !!

Aruna Irani has been a name synonymous with successful television shows like Mehendi Tere Naam Ki, Tum Bin Jaon Kahan, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand and Rabba Ishq Na Hove to name a few. Carrying further the marathon of her successful innings on television would be her new primetime show on SaharaOne, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna. The show would hit the airwaves by the end of the next month. Its star cast includes names like Anuj Saxena, Amit Sarin, Jaya Mathur, Surabhi Tiwari and Barkha Bisht.

Adds Barkha Bisht who plays the female lead Anupama in the show, "Aruna Ji is a perfectionist in the real sense of the word. She cannot settle for less if she is not getting the best out of you. Shooting with her is a lifetime experience and as an actor I have learnt a lot during the shoot of the show."

The show is the story of a girl who has to go through the tribulations of losing her mother, living with a step-mom and finally coming to terms with the complexity of her circumstances.

Barkha Bisht who is also hosting an entertainment show further adds, "It has been one of my most touching moments shooting for the new show. The sensibilities involved into my portrayal have made me aware of the finer human feelings. I am sure the audience is going to have a great time watching the show."

Amit Sareen, who plays the lead opposite Barkha says, "I play Chatainya in the show and it is one of my finest performances. That's all I can say about it at the moment."

Taking a cue from Zee's success with soaps, SaharaOne is also sprucing up its primetime in a bid to woo more audience attention. With Aruna Irani's new show being part of the same strategy, we hope it turns out to be a great success story.

It's hot!

Aroona Irani is back, and how! She's doing a sizzling item number for Ekta Kapoor, a reprise of the popular 'Dilbar dil se pyara' number from the 1971 film Caravan.

NOW

THEN

Aroona performing in Teen Kahaaniyan Teen Raaz A still from Caravan

Remember a young Aroona Irani sizzling on screen to the sound of R D Burman's very popular number 'Dilbar dil se pyare' in the film Caravan all those years ago? Well, she is back, this time older and wiser, sizzling to the same song for Ekta Kapoor's Teen Kahaaniyan Teen Raaz episodes to be telecast on March 26 and 27.

"But of course this was Ekta's idea. And of course I couldn't say no to her. She's such a sweetheart," says Aroona Irani, who's currently playing, what she calls, one of her most interesting roles in Ekta's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. "In fact, I originally performed the 'Dilbar' number with Ekta's father Jeetendra, in 1971. In those days I'd constantly run into Shobhaji when she'd drop in to meet her husband. Then Ekta was born. Ab bachchi kitni badi ho gayi (Now she's grown up). But she isn't the least aware of how big she has become. That's the secret of her success," she adds.

So how did the 'Dilbar' replay happen? "Very simple!" enthuses Aroona. "Ekta asked. I agreed. Of course, our choreographers Harshal-Vitthal have made the steps very different from the original number. And I've performed the song in a sari here, while in the original I had danced in a banjaran's (gypsy's) costumes. All this makes a lot of difference. But I really enjoyed myself, dancing to the same number again."

Aroona's own production house is ready with two new daily soaps. She says, "The first, called Doli Sajake, starts on April 30 on Sahara channel. I've given myself a role in the soap. The second is for Zee. Our movies just don't have a proper place for an actress like me, but I'm keeping myself as busy as possible through TV. I want to die working."
