Roma Navani is shocked that her actor husband Sooraj Thapar is on the look out for a wife. The actress, who is seen in the Sony daily Vaidehi as Mrs Walia (and also in Padmini Kolhapure's play Abhi To Main Jawaan Hoon), says that though there have been problems in their marriage, she is still Thapar's legal wife.
"We are not yet divorced, so how can he declare that he is searching for the right kind of woman? Our divorce case is still pending. And the Hindu law does not allow two wives!"
Marital discord
Navani admits that in the past year there has been a strain in their relationship. "I have not been staying at Sooraj's home at Oshiwara for the last several months. I am now living at my parents' place at Four Bungalows." She alleges that the cause of their marital discord is certain problems on the home front. "That is why our relationship has floundered."
It is learnt that Navani first met Thapar on the sets of the film Angaar, when he was shooting in the vicinity of her house. "I was still in school, then. Later, I met him again when we started doing theatre. We were going around for several years before we tied the knot nearly four years ago. I always thought of Sooraj as a balanced person," adds Navani, who is also seen in the DD show, Jaaoon Kaha.
No woman, no cry
Navani and Thapar were initially part of Om Katare's theatre troupe, Yatri. She had featured in Katare's play, Woh Tum Hi Ho with Shekhar Suman, as well as in Farooque Shaikh's play Azhar Ka Khwab. A few years ago, Thapar broke away from Katare to stage plays, also under the Yatri banner. He is seen with Poonam Dhillon in the Hindi play, Perfect Husband. Thapar is also seen on the small screen in Sharaarat and Pyar Ke Do Naam — Ek Raadha Ek Shyaam.
When asked whether he had made statements about looking for a wife, Thapar claims that he does not know how such things got reported. "It is a two-year-old issue and both of us are living separately. Our divorce is now a mere formality, as only one or two issues need to be sorted out. But I am in no hurry to get into another relationship. Right now I am happy with my acting."
