She is boisterous, savage and bold, impulsive, hardworking and an endearingly loveable mother of three children. Pushpa Patel hails from a small town Patan, Gujarat and resides at Bapodra Chawl, Mumbai. The show is a peek into her day-to-day struggles, her small victories, her Jugaad, her shortcomings, and her constant pursuit of living a good life while struggling as a full-time mother and part-time businesswoman along with being a Class 10 student. It is an autobiography of a mother, who decides to go back to school and change her life by impacting many lives!

A story of a woman’s unconventional journey to earn a life of respect and dignity.

Pushpa Impossible, the story of a woman and her phenomenal turnaround in her quest to earn respect from her family and society through education. Starring Karuna Pandey in the lead role, the show traces a woman’s stellar transition from a victim of fate to a champion of her destiny.

Image

Pushpa Impossible recounts the story of a self-made woman Pushpa from Patan, Gujarat who runs a tiffin service out of her Mumbai chawl room, to earn a livelihood and secure the future for her three children. Trying to keep her family happy and not being disappointed by the things she doesn’t have, she becomes stoic and outspoken. She has little or no time to think of herself or about her aspirations. However, Pushpa regrets not being able to complete her studies. Oscillating between the pressures of running the household and ensuring a survival, Pushpa’s inadequacy is often held back by the urge to keep moving forward. She never bows down to society’s conventions until she is thrown out of the dream by a setback and confronted with a harsh reality; Her children being embarrassed of her.

The show may remind you of the times of Baa Bahoo aur Baby, but does not take away from the charm of today either. The characters are sketched out so well, they are pretty normal people with their quirks and flaws, who just want the best for their own lives. A show, with true essence of women empowerment, depicting a story of Pushpa Patel, a complete phatakdi, who rises against all odds of life but hasn't lost her self-respect in the bargain and will not let anyone put any blemish on it either. Pushpa's children may not be the most ideal in the world, but they do have immense respect for the sacrifices of their mother, and will not cross a certain threshold of morality. The Patels have a very transparent relationship, jaisa dikhta hai waise hi hai, there is nothing under the surface that they dont share with each other, and even if they chide their mother for being a little too frank, it does not take away from being worried about her welfare when she for instance disappears in the middle of night or struggles to arrange for money for their needs.

"Padhai icecream ki tarah hoti hai, use maza le ke karo, ek baar fir gayi to use wapas nahi kha sakte!"

The story focuses on her not wanting to give up on the new goal that she has determined for herself; to educate herself at least at the basic level (and invariably make herself capable to help out Ashwin with his marriage expenses, which has been limited due to her educational status so far), and being willing to fight even the world to achieve it.

What follows next is an astounding journey to complete her education which will turn the tide of fate and set her on the path of earning a life of dignity and respect.

Created by Hats Off Production, Pushpa Impossible features an amazing ensemble of actors in Karuna Pandey, Naveen Pandita, Darshan Gurjar, Deshna Dugad, Garima Parihar, Sachin Parikh, Sarita Joshi and Bhakti Rathod.

Mr. Neeraj Vyas, Business Head – Sony SAB

“Pushpa Impossible is a story of a woman who is distinct in her life choices, unfiltered in her beliefs and unlike any conventional mothers on Indian television. Her quest for respect from her family and society leads her to realize the significance of education in a person’s life. For her, respect and education are intertwined, and she aspires to achieve both. We are glad to have found a perfect ‘Pushpa’ in Karuna Pandey, she’s a powerhouse of talent and conviction. We hope the audience welcome Pushpa into their homes and hearts.”

JD Majethia, Founder, Hats Off Productions

“In Pushpa Impossible, we are delighted to present the story of a mother who, despite her shortcomings is strong willed enough to take a shot at life. She is not the quintessential woman waiting to be saved by someone, instead, it’s her astonishing journey to become one for herself and many others like hers. A spunky woman with a simple mantra in life – even ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ can be looked at as ‘I M POSSIBLE’. Finding the perfect actress for this role was difficult, we went far and wide and found Karuna to possess the flawless combo of softness, talent and skills to play Pushpa. We are happy to collaborate with Sony SAB once again and present to our audiences another slice of life offering that’s sure to resonate with women across the country."

“Life Ne Full Time Mujhse Fielding Hi Karaayi Hai, Isliye Ab Main Sirf Batting Karti Hoon”

Much like her one-liners, Pushpa is known for her courage and perseverance, who doesn’t like to give up on things easily. Pushpa is very much like her name, spreading love and freshness wherever she goes. Her determination keeps her going.

Pushpa is famous for her culinary skills and never fails to fill the empty stomachs of her clients. She lives by the philosophy that 'life will throw many problems at you, how you deal with them will determine your chances of success'.

She is the perfect combo of tenderness and strictness as a mother. Self-respect is the most treasured jewel of her and she doesn't let anyone trample over her self-respect.

Beyond her lively, simple and hardworking exterior, lies a woman inside her whose happiness lies in the little things of life; listening to classic Hindi songs of Kishore Kumar, having Gajra of her favourite flowers and the love for playing cricket.

Her determination to study and the hard work she put in for it, going against her own children shows her perseverance and strength. She is not the typical woman who only wants her kids to take up conventional jobs, she encouraged Chirag to use his sketching skills to make a living.

Ashwin is the eldest son of Pushpa who has seen his mother's struggle right from childhood which has made him mature and a responsible son. He is just not an elder brother to his siblings but a father figure too, especially to Rashi. Ashwin knows and understands that taking care of his brother and sister's academics is just not their mother's responsibility but his too, in the absence of their father in their lives.

He is no different than a responsible and sensible son of a middle-class family who contributes to the family by his earnings, thinking about family's needs first and keeping it above his own needs, and sometimes needs to create an extra source of income to fullfill his and family's needs. Despite being in a chawl environment, he is still very sophisticated and responds to someone in the same sophisticated manner if they taunt his family.

Ashwin not only left Deepti's parents impressed but won most of the audience's hearts too when he stated very clearly that his mother, brother and sister are his responsibility and he won't leave them for Deepti. When Pushpa decided to continue her study, he's the one who acted maturely, understanding both Rashi and his mother's POV and tried his best to make Rashi understand their mother's point of view. Not having a father's love and care might upset Chirag and Rashi sometimes but they're lucky to have a supportive, loving elder brother like Ashwin who guides them, appreciates them on their achievements and scolds them for their wrongs just like a father. Though Pushpa lost her parents at a young age, but sometimes Ashwin makes her feel like she also has a mother, by doing and saying exactly the same things which she used to say to him when he was child.

Ashwin as a partner, is both loving and supportive. Both Deepti and Ashwin have a great understanding between them. Though he works under Deepti but never feels embarrassed to work under her or is jealous of her growth; infact he was equally happy with Deepti's promotion just like her parents.

Ashwin's best friend, Bhaskar suggested taking up a job in the Gulf countries, like he has, so that he could get better off financially in less time and Ashwin considered it. After a lot of thought, he realised that he could not stay away from his family, even if it was for their betterment. He declined the job and continued his current one. Pushpa welcomed his decision happily, and so did Deepti and her parents.

Ashwin is played wonderfully by Naveen Pandita, bringing the shades of a doting son, a sweet lover and the responsible eldest sibling out in perfection.

'Dil accha hai lekin tareeka kaccha hai' perfectly fits Chirag, the second child of Pushpa, her youngest son who is more attuned to Pushpa's feelings as compared to his two siblings.

Seeing her mother's struggling life he got involved in gambling, trying to make quick money in order to contribute his share of money in running the house, without knowing the reality of its bad effects. His intentions weren't wrong but the path was; but luckily, his mother got to know about it at the right time. The way Pushpa brought him back to track by chasing him with a bat, might have taken 90's born children back to their childhood when mothers certainly followed kids with belan when they did some mischiefs, but a very rare sight to watch nowadays in any family especially with today's kids, who immediately threatens to call the police for child abuse anytime even when parents scold them rightfully.

Chirag is more like Pushpa in every way whether it's about the hidden artist in him, or their indirect way of speaking things, or playing cricket or doing some jugaad to get the work done when the work seems difficult.

With Saraswati Maa's blessings he is gifted in the art of sketching which landed him with a job at the police station as a sketch artist, but either he wasn't grown up or intelligent enough to realise that his art can be transformed to a career leading him to path of success, which will get him accolades and money. Thanks to Prathana, his college-mate and neighborhood friend who gave him this idea and encouraged him and finally, with Prathana's partnership and seed capital given by her, Chirag managed to open his business PC Creations - a studio.

He might not be a responsible and mature son like his elder brother but he is a loving son who cares about his mother's feelings. When Pushpa decided to quit her study again for Rashi's ego it was him who saw more that what it seemed to be and took charge to make his mother change the decision. Sometimes he also tries to do little things for her which makes her smile whether it is bringing Gajra of her favourite flowers or sending her school after feeding dahi-cheeni or appreciating her efforts in study like when she wrote 'Mathematics' on the cover of her textbook.

He is protective, caring towards his family who can't tolerate wrong words against his mother and if someone does that he makes them pay back for it. Sometimes he behaves sensibly while rest of the time indulges in masti with his family or neighbours, making others laugh.

His teasing, sharing problems and little flirtation with Prarthana is cute, unaware of her true feelings for himself, though it seemed like his elder brother has sensed something. It will be interesting to watch whether Chirag will get to know about Prarthana's feelings on his own or his elder brother will give some hint to him and what will happen to Bapodra-Chirag angle if this love-story ever takes off.

The character is played brilliantly by Darshan Gurjar, bringing all nuances of the character well on the screen, who got this role after his fantastic performance as cameo in another show of the same channel.

Rashi is a tenth grade student, a typical teenager we see all around us. She is the youngest but not spoilt per say by her mother or brothers. She loves her family, can see the limitations, but she wants her own sky too.

Her frustration about her mother being less educated, or the undertones of bullying she has to suffer because she is not naturally gifted in academics or she creating obstructions in the path of her own mother's dreams for her ego seemed relatable to some extent. But, now she has come so far that she is missing her mother's presence in the school and remembering every moment she spent with her in the school, when her mother wasn't there as a student. She genuinely wants her mother to come back as a student and continue her study.

She truly proved before the world that she is her mother's daughter when she stood up to the bully Aryan and told everything to the Principal without shying away from accepting her mistake.

Deshna Dugad, a talented actor who has appeared in several TV shows like 'Mariam Khan-Reporting Live', 'Bal Krishna' is portraying the role of Rashi Patel.

Deepti is a beautiful, strong headed woman, ambitious, stern or sweet as the situation demands and simple, loving and caring on the whole. She talks more with her eyes and gestures than words.

She loves Ashwin and knows they have different financial backgrounds, but is ready to share her life with him. She accepts Pushpa as her second mother and lends full support, teaching her, taking revision and occasionally scolding her for not paying enough attention to studies. Deepti has a sweet bond with Rashi and Chirag as well. She is already a part of the Patel family.

The maturity and understanding shown by Deepti and her parents when Ashwin did not come to her party and did not pick up her calls was heartwarming. She was understandably upset, they were skeptical and rightly so; the first time you hear news like this, that is exactly how one will react, no one will immediately process it without an outburst. But Deepti heard his side and understood his compulsions and the need to be there for his family instead of attending a party. She fully supported her would-be mother-in-law's decision of continuing her study at athe age of 44 and felt proud on her. Also, Deepti herself dropped Pushpa on her first day at school.

Garima Parihar aptly portrays Deepti. She said in an interview, “She is open-minded, and upfront about her feelings. She doesn’t believe in the status quo and accepts Ashwin the way he is. Not only this, but she also is a feminist. I am a hardcore feminist too! We are the two sides of the same coin, I personally resonate with her a lot”.

Sonal, Deepti's mom is a very practical person. She and her husband are very well sorted. Sonal has her reservations about the Patel family and their financial status being better, yet agreeing because her her daughter loves Ashwin so much and is happy with him.

Instead of breaking the engagement due to all the problems they are supporting Ashwin and his family. They are showing the true definition of what family means. Sonal is inspired by Pushpa completing her education and decides to pursue her degree.

They're not caricaturish, but real people with relatable concerns. Like yes, she cares a lot about Deepti and wants to secure her future, but the moment she saw Deepti loved Ashwin, she kept all those inhibitions aside for her happiness.

Loved the scene when Sonal and Manish come home and Pushpa is about to serve with her hand then uses spoon and says 'chammach to kitno ke muh mein jaati hai, hath to sirf apne muh mein jata hain' the cringe on her face.

Bhakti Rathod, who is playing Sonal's character summed-up her character in her interview "Sonal Parikh is the complete opposite of Pushpa in all regards except one; that she also wants the best for her child".

Image

✿ 𝕄𝕒𝕟𝕚𝕤𝕙 ✿

Image

Manish is a doting father, loving husband and a wonderful person. He sees the struggles Pushpa goes through to keep her head high and provide for her children. Her simplicity and boldness, the Desi tadka touches his heart and he is the one to crack jokes with her and tease Sonal.

These Vevai-Vevaan (Manish-Pushpa) are like siblings at times, making fun of the names of the international dishes Sonal tastefully makes or eating with hand instead of spoon.

Manish is down-to-earth and readily accepts teaching Pushpa, only to feel it like a punishment when he has to translate the words from English to Hindi and finds it difficult. He asks Sonal to teach her Science, "akele main hi kyu padhau?"

Sachin Parikh, a versatile actor whom we had seen playing various shades from positive to negative on screen is now winning hearts as Manish Parikh.

Mahendra Thakkar is Pushpa's friend, who is like a brother to her. He lives with his son Golu in the same chawl as Pushpa and works as a local shopkeeper there. He just not consoled her with words but also provided financial support in her struggling days without asking any return of payment from her.

He has a great hand in upbringing of Ashwin as he helped Pushpa in taking care of Ashwin, paying his school fees etc, when Pushpa went to other's home for work and never did show-off of the favours made to Pushpa before others. Mahendra is truly a person having a heart of gold.

Played by another actor from Gujarati Rangbhumi, Amish Tanna – a native of Gujarat’s Veraval Somnath town located in Saurashtra’s Gir Somnath District, who started his Hindi TV career from the show Papad Pol. He has acted in innumerable HIndi shows since then and appeared in many Gujarati theatre plays. The boy who is playing Golu suffers from Down-syndrome in real life. He is a superb actor full of energy.

Ashutosh Nanavati is a true educator who understands the necessity of spreading education across the sections of society, taking forth the vision of his mother. Pushpa touched the chords of his heart with her dhagash, junoon to study.

Nanavati Sir is the mentor of Pushpa on whom she can rely on for solutions when she’s facing a roadblock in her studies. Pushpa benefits from his wisdom and empathy while Pushpa’s unique mindset makes Ashutosh learn something new in each of their conversations.

A student and teacher’s relationship is said to be sacred but when friendship is added to this equation, it becomes a very wholesome combo. Pushpa's relationship with his mentor Ashutosh Nanavati, the trustee of her school is just like that. Ashutosh, an open-minded and inspiring person, is a major supporter of Pushpa in her educational journey and is someone whom she looks up to. He became a stepping-stone towards her success. Their bond though is beyond the limits of Guru-Shishya, they are also good friends.

Jagat Rawat who is inspiring all of us with Nanavati Sir's character once commented about his character in an interview that "Ashutosh is a major catalyst in Pushpa’s education and it feels good to play a character who is so open minded and inspiring, who is a mentor to such a great woman like Pushpa.”

Vikram Saran, a counsellor, who's young, intelligent, smart, funny and very positive. He helps everyone and especially Pushpa to achieve her educational goals. Saran is an unconventional educator, he tells Pushpa to "listen" to the chapters so that she can learn while doing her tasks and understand the material in her own language. He can be seen encouraging Pushpa to fight all fights and come out stronger, specially to have her basic education.

Saran and Pushpa's first meet of of felling the mangoes from tree and eating it was the most heartwarming and the essence of their relationship is learning both ways. Saran explained Pushpa the difference between wise and intelligent and she understood it well which can be seen when Pushpa told Kaku that Kaku is wise and she herself is intelligent. Saran is a mentor, guide and sometimes a friend to Pushpa.

Adish Vaidya, who has worked in both the Hindi and Marathi industries is playing the vibrant character of Saran and is being praised for his impressive performance. He also participated in Bigg Boss Marathi 3.

The English, Science or Maths teacher has come so far in Pushpa's educational journey, once who wouldn't slow down to help Pushpa pen down her notes is now appreciating her efforts to keep up with the pace and her presence of mind. It was a journey of accepting an older student along with the teenagers as a part of the same class and having to maintain the balance between the two.

Initially Mrs Sudha, the Maths teacher who was a little bit bitter towards Pushpa because of the PTMs incident is also now pushing Pushpa to answer in the class. The Hindi teacher, Geeta Mam is always encouraging Pushpa and using her as an example for other students. The school Principal, Veena Mam also sets an example by rusticating Aryan, who used to bully other students and mentally harassed Rashi by blackmailing her.

Rashi's best friends Sameer (Sam) and Parminder "Cheese" became friends of Pushpa too. They accepted and welcomed Pushpa in their group, helped her in making notes and homework and occasional translations of English to Hindi. Some of Rashi's classmates do make fun of Rashi and her mother studying together but soon realise that it is a feat in itself and accept Pushpa as a co-student.

Sameer is a good and mature boy, a true friend who advised Rashi to support her mother when he came to know about Pushpa joining the school. He also told Rashi to share her problems during Aryan's case and followed Rashi upto Bandra with Parminder bunking the classes just to save her. He is the one who informed Pushpa about Rashi going to Bandra and helped Rashi.

Meghna, Rashi's friend also supported Rashi during the Aryan's case and suggested taking a video of their meeting so that she has proof of his harassment tactics and spoke in her favour to the principal. She's also in favour of Pushpa continuing her schooling.

The recent case of food poisoning during a unit test, where Pushpa helped and carried the kids to the ambulance has won the hearts of students and even parents who had their reservations about Pushpa studying in school.

The Parents had earlier made a representation to remove Pushpa from school but later they agreed to let her stay if she passes the exam.

Some characters that aren't of much importance still played an important role in Pushpa's life and are the reasons behind why Pushpa is so strong, inspiring and admiring.

Image

✿ 𝔹𝕒𝕡𝕦𝕛𝕚 ✿

We all inherit some punji from our parents, it may be materialistic or non-materialistic like their creative qualities or their teachings. Sometimes these qualities are in-built, which we need to acknowledge and polish it and sometimes our parents upbringing instill those teachings and qualities in us. Pushpa's father didn't leave any materialistic punji but his teachings are always with her which gives the strength to Pushpa to fight against all odds and win it. Once, when Pushpa wanted to study at night without disturbing her children's sleep but couldn't find a way, it was her father's teachings which showed her the solution to the problem - using his old lantern (lalten).

Her father wasn't a great man, he too learnt from his mistakes; he learnt the importance of having a daughter after losing his wife for the desire of having a son, which he himself confessed to his daughter. He also taught Pushpa the art of handloom weaving and gifted a 'Patola' to her which they had woven together, with her mother's gold bangles. He was the first teacher of Pushpa who told her 'Never to lose hope', which she remembers always.

Image

✿ 𝔸𝕣𝕧𝕚𝕟𝕕 𝕄𝕒𝕤𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕁𝕚 ✿

Arvind, the teacher of Pushpa who taught her upto 9th standard when she lived in Patan with her Bapuji. Pushpa used to steal tamarind from his teacher's garden, hence became famous as 'Imlie Chor' of Patan. Arvind MasterJi used to be happy when Pushpa asked her doubts. He always encouraged her for studies. Even when she decided to continue her study after a long gap he helped her by giving the required documents which he had kept safely for so long. Pushpa talks about him a lot which clearly shows how important he's in her life.

✿ 𝔻𝕚𝕝𝕚𝕡 ℙ𝕒𝕥𝕖𝕝 ✿

Damini Mehra is a reputed lawyer who charges 6 lacs fee for one hearing. Her entry scene where she walked up to Pushpa in style was amazing. She as a character brought soo much energy and positivity in the show.

Later her daughter meets Pushpa when her purse gets stolen and Pushpa helps her get it back by doing her tikadam. Damini Mehra meets Pushpa again when her daughter gives a description about her to find her in the police station and the sketch was made by Chirag.

When she meets Pushpa in her Chawl and sees her condition, she agrees to fight her case for free, as she says woh Kanoon ko dhaal banati hain (treating Law as a shield) to help women in need. Pushpa still gave some money to Damini but she returned back those by keeping it Pooja's thali of society's temple (Lawyers are always asked to give back the money to the society to help those who can't afford the fee). Damini is someone whose one stare can make Bapodra and other lawyers shut up and can even re-open a case in Supreme court at 12 mid-night.

She brings the lawyer who made the agreement many years back to save Pushpa's house and sent Bapodra to jail. Also, forgeing the documents made Asthani lose his 1 year as a lawyer as punishment.

Played by Mona Singh who gave a fantastic performance in her powerful and sweet cameo. The class and freshness she brings as Advocate Damini Mehra is something different from what we see on daily ITV shows.
