The laughs flow naturally in Jihne Mera Dil Luteya

By R. Paul Dhillon, August 4, 2011

Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Neeru Bajwa, and Gippy Grewal. In Punjabi with English subtitles. Rated PG.

After decades in the doldrums, the new Punjabi cinema is maturing and diversifying with new story lines and a new generation of stars, including a number of Indo-Canadian figures such as Neeru Bajwa and Punjabi singer-turned-actor Gippy Grewal.

Both Grewal and Bajwa feature prominently in the entertaining new romantic comedy Jinhe Mera Dil Luteya (She Stole My Heart), along with another popular Punjab-based singer-actor, Diljit Dosanjh.

This campus-set film pits Dosanjh€™s Gurnoor against Grewal€™s Yuvraj by having both chase after the affections of sexy new student Noor (Bajwa), the only child of a wealthy U.K.-based father who has decided to relocate to his homeland, Punjab, following his separation from his wife.

In a reversal of the usual plot device of parents being obstacles to their kids€™ romance, the filmmakers have the fathers tell their sons to get the girl. The fathers seek to inherit the fortune of the girl€™s father, who is building a multimillion-dollar fertilizer plant.

Although the sons don€™t need any convincing, they nevertheless use extortion tactics on their landowning fathers and demand a hefty allowance as they wine and dine Noor, one-upping each other to win her over. The laughs flow naturally from their pitfalls, pranks, fights, and friendships.

Bajwa, as usual, breezes through her role as Noor. Grewal holds his own against Dosanjh, an emerging talent who seems destined for superstardom. Popular comics Jaswinder Bhalla and Binnu Dhillon lend strong support.

There is nothing particularly original in the film, which borrows the plot structure from classic Bollywood love triangles. But director Mandeep Kumar brings a breezy quality to the narrative, keeping the action moving to create a funny, entertaining film that has fresh characters and sharp dialogue.
