Functionings of a Dysfunctional Family

So the missing father and his second wife showed up today and the entire Jagotia family's dysfunctionality was on display. Everyone was in the same room with Sarita washing and ironing the clothes in the living room (who does that??). So I guess, these people do come together and all of them display resentment, temper tantrums and what not in public. I think aimf wrote one time that this family is fascinating in how they wash their dirty linen in public.

Looking at normal interaction between Divya and Gaurav and openness of her with both Gaurav and her siblings made me think that Divya had a lucky escape from this lunatic family. Now she is trying to get into middle of this despite Gaurav's warnings. Gaurav was being sensible in warning her to stay away from Raj and Sarita even though part of his warning was coming from feeling insecure. He and Sarita both felt insecure about Raj and Divya's connection. The method of expressing fear was different as Gaurav is a sophisticated person and Sarita has a direct in-your-face blunt approach.

Coming back to Jakotia family, I felt sorry for Kamla for the first time after the leap. So it seems that Sarita is her punching bag and she takes out all her frustrations that she has towards her husband on Sarita. I really liked how she was suppressing herself when she was forced to worship her husband. Who asked her to do all this? Was it Sohalal or was it Dadi who started this and Kamla has to continue the tradition.

Kamla is pretty much alone because her daughters who side with her when she torments Sarita actually abandoned her when it came to the father. Since father more than likely holds purse strings, they were ridiculing their mother (by smiling in amusement) to make him happy. Nobody respects Kamla - Dadi, husband, daughters, DIL and even son. But maybe Raj is the only one who gave her importance in past and that's why she blames Sarita because Raj became this way especially after his marriage to Sarita. Also Sarita is choice of Sohanlal and probably that's the biggest black mark against her.

Dadi is another character who is two-faced. She supports both Sarita and Kamla very discreetly, but never stands up for them upfront. She was even slightly amused when Sohanlal called Kamla an imbecile. She only reacted to his being nice to his second wife who butters him up at every instance. She taunted him for neglecting his mother, but did not say a word when he was threatening ot beat up Kamla. It seems that when he can't control Raj, he takes it out on Kamla. So everyone in this family takes out their frustration on the other person.

Raj also is very disdainful of his father. His retort at his father that things bought or deals made by him doesn't interest Raj, even if they were good looking. The camera zoomed to Sarita on this part. Was it not only "abandonment" of Divya that made him like this. Is ignoring Sarita also a rebellion against his father because Sohanlal made a deal with Sarita's father in exchange for the marriage. According to Sarita, they got a lot of dowry 10 years ago.

Sarita too is coming out as a messed up character to me similar to Raj . Now I am curious about her background. What kind of parents marry their daughter into such a family? Also, even if she got married into such a family, why is she putting up with them. So far it seems that she is so much in love with Raj that she doesn't want to walk out of this relationship because she knows that Raj wouldn't care and would actually be relieved. I don't understand such a behavior of wasting one's life on somebody who doesn't care at all for her. In any case, both Sarita and Raj needs to sort themselves out before they would be ready for a relationship.

So, Gaurav was right even though he doesn't know this dysfunctional family. Divya is only getting herself deep in a things that would consume her. Maybe her honesty and an ability to call spade a spade would transform this family. She does seem to be a trigger for everyone so far - Raj and Sarita. Divya in some sense is a force of nature that is here to shake up this family. She is a free spirit whose spirit I hope is not killed by this family.

Also I liked Gaurav today who seemed more realistic with his insecurity and legitimate fears about Divya. It seems that Divya though open is quite stubborn once she decides on a path. Wonder if that's how she reacted 10 years ago. She is very goal oriented and once gets something on her mind doesn't deviate from it.

In conclusion, today the actor playing Kamla impressed me. Her Haryanavi accent and her body language were really good. Her suppressed anger and resentment while serving the husband and his wife, then trying to control her tears when Dadi was admonishing her for being responsible for the whole mess and then her taking out her anger at Sarita was done very well. Rubina and Shristy were also quite good even though there was very little scope for Rubina. I liked Rubina in her scenes with Gaurav and then trying to control her emotions after seeing Raj. However the actor playing Kamla was the star for me today.

Very nice analysis of today's episode. Indeed the contrasts that you mention were heightened in this episode.

Thanks, aimf. Actually I am more and more stuck with similarities between Kamla and Sarita even though they seemed so different in the beginning. Just as Sarita became bitter (and Kamla like in her querolous nature) in 10 years of marriage, it seems that Kamla too became like that. Unlike Sarita, Kamla is greedy. But she did have dreams of a faithful husband (as told by Dadi) that got broken. Also he is a very sadistic, chauvanist husband. Maybe that's why Raj doesn't stand up for Sarita as he may have a soft spot for his mother's sufferings. It is not right, but still it can explain his passiveness in ignoring abuse of Sarita.

Then there is Dadi who gives false hopes to Sarita. Always her words affect Sarita because Sarita gives respect to Dadi for her mild support. Sarita partially is blaming Divya for everything because of Dadi doing the same. Today Dadi's words made her insecure and she again started questioning her decision to bring Divya in Raj's life. Dadi is such a hypocrite that she can taunt her son, but not stand up for her DIL or tell him that his actions are wrong. She has done the same thing to Kamla where she has taunted her on various things (inviting her sister etc.) but did not stand up for Sarita until just recently. Then Dadi's words on "man's nature" and not trusting a guy with a beautiful woman were terrible. What kind of value system she has given to her son who has no respect for any woman?

Gosh! I posted something very similar in another discussion. So, I agree with everything you said about Raj, Kamla and his family.
I felt very bad for both Raj and his mother - especially his mother. To end up with a husband who insults her before her kids and who has brought a second woman into her house after a long married life must be unbearably painful and heart breaking. Taking it all out on Sarita is wrong but at least she hates her husband as well.
Gaurav's words resonated well with me - they were words of reason and everyday practicality. I currently like his the most in the most - purely based on his character. Or, maybe I am biased as for the first time I am seeing an academic person on TV who's not a nerd. I mostly avoid shows as I never relate to characters on TV - there are no non-geeky researchers, no good working Mom (the one who loves her kid but wants to work for personal satisfaction).
Raj's sisters and his dadi are just caricatures - no real personality. Honestly I can never believe that any grown up daughter can take her mother's insult the way Raj's sisters accept - irrespective of the money factor. Even my 2 year old kid reacts when I have even minor disagreements with my husband - and he always supports me over my husband (something that makes him jealous 😆).

Angie Very true, and observant statement.

What simultaneously intrigues and fascinates me is that the value system of this family is so topsy turvy. What others hide, they like to air out; what should be in the open is hidden, and in the midst of all this, we are totally clueless about the motivations of the actions of the characters. Dadi, as you mention, is obviously a survivor, and will say anything to just ensure that she is not thrown out of the house by her son. Plus, they all belong to the 14th C in terms of their thinking. I also was struck by similarities in todays episode and made a post in the main forum. Please read it if you have time.

nice analysis TM!

what struck me is this is a family where every1 has their own agendas n its all abt me, myself n i but nothg abt family unity n support!

kamla n sarita has stark similarities but both seem to have different motives to stay in loveless unhappy marriages?

shocking was not seeing the kids atleast standing up for their mother! somehow i get this is a family who has no respect for humane prespective much less women, n raj is no exception!
i dont think raj shld have neither divya nor sarita!

This episode was kinda twisted to me...i get it that they tried to show that Raj was forced by the father to marry Sarita...but what do not understand is this man, raj's father has two wives?! married both kamla and other legally?! is that even possible, isnt it bigamy?
Anyway, hope divya will consider gauravs words and wont go to that house..or else the poor girl will b shocked..

lol... no, bigamy is illegal! legally there can only be 1 spouse at any given time unless n until d spouse dies or divorce is granted by court then a person can marry again!

Kamla seems to be d legal wife so d other lady is d mistress only!

poor raj n sarita n divya! I dont like these new characters!
