Part 9-A
Jai stepped out of his flower-decked car on to the red carpeted porch of the hotel only to be greeted by the simultaneous flashing of hundreds of camera bulbs. The air was thick with noise and there was a sudden rush towards him as several journalists began to jostle for his attention.
"Mr. Walia, Kaisa lag raha hai aapko aaj apni shaadi ke din?"
"What made you decide to suddenly get married?"
"There were rumours that you were dating Ms. Roshni Chopra. Any comments?"
"Aap Bani se pehli baar kahan mile?"
Enthusiastic jounralists bombarded him with questions, some of them thrusting the microphone right into his face.
Jai lifted his sehra from his face slightly to look irritably at the milling media-persons. "Let me go
please." He said curtly trying to push his way towards the entrance.
"Who is this Bani Dixit? Was it love at first sight for you?" A particularly pesky reporter insisted tugging at his sleeve.
"I said LET ME GO! I don't need to answer your questions GODDAMIT!" Jai roared furiously shrugging him off with an aggressive gesture.
Aditya appeared by his side at that moment along with some members of the hotel security staff and cleared a passage for him. "Gentlemen…please! The groom can think only of his beautiful wife at the moment." He immediaately said smoothly. "All your questions will be answered later…I promise you that…But for now PLEASE…We are getting late for the wedding." He waved cheerfully at the journalists and placing an arm around Jai lightly followed him inside the hotel.
As soon as the glass doors of the hotel were shut to the clamouring media, Jai spun around to the hotel manager who was hovering obsequiously by his side...
"What THE HELL was THAT? Can't I even come to my own wedding without being hounded by scores of people? This is the bl***** security you were promising me?" He thundered as the manager cowered with a frightened expression.
"Jai…Jai…please calm down…" Aditya interposed laying a soothing hand on Jai's arm…
"You don't understand Aditya…I am playing these people a fortune DAMMIT! Can't I even expect this much?" Jai bellowed shaking off Aditya's hand and turning from him to the manager.
"Its OKAY Jai…Let him go. Its not his fault. "Aditya said again tugging Jai's arm and simultaneously gesturing to the white-faced manager to go away. "Come Jai…see everyone is watching us. Look at all the guests there. What WILL they think…Calm down". He spoke rapidly pointing with a look to the people teeming in the lobby. Many of them had turned to watch the groom's entrance, and were now interestedly watching the little scene in progress. Jai took in the curious expressions on several faces and with a final glare at the manager decided to let him go.
He began walking ahead with Aditya even as several people came forward to greet him enthusiastically.
"I
said I don't want a big wedding. I gave express instructions that I wanted it low key. Why the hell is the whole city here today then?" He growled in an undertone to Aditya.
"Jai…its
your wedding. Of course people are excited about it." Aditya replied with a slight smile.
"I BET its all Jigyasa's doing…She must have invited all those journalists and now all these people. Why can't she listen to me for once?" Jai continued angrily hardly listening to Aditya.
"Jai…RELAX! Its your wedding yaar…Aaj ke din to mood mat kharaab karo. Okay…look…there is Nishikant ji…" Aditya responded pateintly.
They had been walking rapidly while speaking and were now in front of the the banquet hall where the main arrangements had been made. A huge bower had been erected with white and pink roses at its entrance, and underneath it stood Nishikant Dixit among a knot of friends and relatives. He was wearing the traditional pink headgear which was worn by the male members of the bride's family and was holding a garland in hands for welcoming the groom.
Jai saw him and his face stiffened, a look of utter loathing came into his eyes. Nishikant Dixit caught sight of them at almost the same moment, and immediately advanced forward to meet them, his face wreathed in a cloying smile.
"Aayiye…Aditya ji…Jai Beta…Aap hi ka wait kar rahe the…" he said with a simper folding his hands in a greeting, and then stepping ahead to embrace Jai. Almost automatically, Jai took a step backwards looking disgusted… "Please…" he said with a scowl, staving him off with his hand.
There was an awkward silence for a few seconds as everyone stared surprised and Nishikant Dixit looked strangely discomfited.
Then Aditya came forth taking things in hand again… "Sorry Nishikant ji…Hamein thodi der ho gayi…" he said warmly… "Laiye…mujhe dijiye…" he said taking the garland he was still holding. Behaving as if nothing had happened, he put the garland around Jai's neck with a cheerful smile. Jai directed a black look at him, and then strode forth thunderously, even as everyone gave him room to enter.
Aditya followed him behind closely, and putting his arm around him, gently led him away from the others.
"Jai…yeh sab kya hai?...Why are you behaving like this? Kab se dekh raha hoon…tumhara mood kharab hi hota ja raha hai..." he immediately said in a tone which was half-concerned, half-reproving.
"I don't know what you are talking about…" Jai replied gruffly.
"Yes you do…you know
exactly what I am talking about…And I want to know the reason…Everything has happened as per your wish….YOU said that you wanted to marry Bani…Then why have you been acting as if you don't want this wedding to happen at all?" Aditya said, sounding exasperated now.
"You are damn right Aditya…I DON'T want this wedding." Jai said gritting his teeth.
"Jai…I just don't understand you…" Aditya told him looking impatient… "First you came and said that you wanted to marry Roshni. We accepted that. Then one fine day you came and announced that you had broken off your engagement with Roshni and wanted to marry Bani instead. All of us…Jigyasa, Maa, myself… kept asking you what had happened…But you never said nothing. All you said time and again was that you had made your decision and Bani was to be your wife. And now…on the very day of the wedding, you are saying that you are not happy with all this…Yeh sab aakhir KYA hai Jai?...Tum to kisi ke zindagi ke saath aise nahi khelte. Phir ab kya kar rahe ho?"
Jai looked at Aditya, his face becoming clouded… "Tum nahi samjhoge Aditya…I can't explain it you…" he said at long last with a far-off look in his eyes…
Aditya stared at his friend, a worried furrow on his forehead… "Dekho Jai…I am your oldest friend. I don't know what's eating you up from inside. But I just want to say this… Bani bahut acchi ladki hai. Maine tumhe kabhi kaha nahi, par maine kabhi Roshni ko tumhare layak nahi samjha. Par Bani…woh sab se alag hai. Yeh sach hai ki maine kabhi bhi tum dono ke baare mein is tarah nahi socha tha. Par jab se yeh shaadi ki baat uthi hai, main convince ho gaya hoon ki Bani hi tumhare liye theek rahegi. She will make you very happy."
Jai listened to Aditya in a stubborn silence, turning away his face with a disbelieving expression at his last words. Aditya comfortingly squeezed his shoulder, forcing him to look back at him again…
"Listen to me Jai…
Don't do this…Be reasonable. This wedding is on now and Bani's happiness is now going to be your responsibility. Don't forget that." He said. His eyes traveled over the distance and noticed Jigyasa gesturing to him frantically to come and join her to meet someone. He waved to her to wait before turning his attention back to Jai…
"Accha dekho, tumhari behen ka bulava aa gaya hai. I will be back soon. Tab tak yaar tum apna mood theek kar lo. Okay?" he enquired and patting him on the back hurried off in the direction of his wife.
