When Ranbir lost out to Barfi
By VICKY LALWANI, Mumbai Mirror
A co-passenger, a die-hard fan of his screen character, failed to recognise the reigning heartthrob, even after a long conversation about the film.

The incident occurred yesterday morning. On his way back from Dubai where he was promoting his upcoming film, Ranbir Kapoor had an experience he will not forget anytime soon. He met a lady on the flight, who despite being an ardent fan of the character he played in Barfi, failed to recognise the actor. And this, after having a chat with him for half-anhour.

An amused Ranbir played along. The lady, who had this curious rendezvous with Ranbir, was Sophia Jammal Samtani --a Lebanese married to an Indian, who was travelling from Lagos to Mumbai to meet her husband.

An eyewitness told Mirror, "Dubai was a stopover. Sophia was sleeping blissfully when Ranbir came and sat next to her. She woke up about half-an-hour before the flight landed in Mumbai."

Ranbir struck up a conversation with her and the topic soon veered towards films. Sophia told Ranbir that although she has not seen many Hindi films, some have made a deep impact on her. She also mentioned Fanaa and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. It was when Ranbir asked if she had seen any recent film, Sophia said excitedly: "Sorry but I forgot Barfi. That was one film in recent times, that will always remain entrenched in my memory. All three actors (she did not name them as Ileana D'Cruz, Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor though) gave noteworthy performances, especially that guy Barfi."

They kept chatting and it was only when the flight touched the runaway, Ranbir introduced himself saying: "Ma'am, I am Barfi."

Mirror contacted Sophia, and she confirmed the story and confessed: "When he told me he was the Barfi guy, I thought he was joking. Although he had the same spiky hair...but I couldn't place him. It was when he insisted that I realised my faux pas. It was embarrassing. I am sure Barfi (note: she is still not calling him Ranbir) must have thought I am dumb."

As the flight came to a halt, a very sheepish Sophia requested Ranbir for a picture. "Thankfully, he agreed. I am so happy to have met Barfi (Ranbir who?)."

Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor has confessed that his heart beats for dancing diva Madhuri Dixit, with whom he did a special song for his upcoming film 'Yeh Jaawani Hain Deewani'.

The 30-year-old actor, who is often linked with his co-stars, said he considers the actresses in his films as his 'friends'.

"They (my co-stars) are my friends. I work with them in films and perhaps that's the reason why people keep talking about us. My heart only beats for one woman and her name is Madhuri Dixit. Through this film, my childhood dream of dancing with her is fulfilled. I feel very lucky to work with her," he said.

Ranbir shared the screen space with Madhuri for an item song'Ghagra' in the film, which will hit theatres on May 31.

The actor also revealed that he was the one who suggested director Ayan Mukherjee to add a kissing scene at the end of the number.

"I do not know if I would get such a chance in life again or not. The kissing scene took four retakes and must say that I have not done these retakes intentionally," he added.

Referring to Madhuri as his 'Dream girl', he continued, "When she comes on the screen, light spreads in all the directions."

Ranbir, who got maximum fame for portraying a deaf and mute boy in 'Barfi', said he would not like to play a similar character like the one he played in Anurag Basu's film.

"I want to play new characters now. My wish is to work in action, thriller-suspense and period films," he said.

Asked if he would like to reprise any of the character played by his father Rishi Kapoor in his films, Ranbir said, "I am a big fan of my father because he is a fine actor. But I don't feel repeating any of his characters. I would not be able to do justice to them."

Ranbir has taken a road less travelled: Rishi Kapoor (Interview)

Rishi Kapoor admits that "films are our family business", is happy that his son Ranbir entered filmdom and praises him for taking an unconventional route to stardom without his help.

Interview with rishi kapoor

Rishi Kapoor admits that "films are our family business", is happy that his son Ranbir entered filmdom and praises him for taking an unconventional route to stardom without his help.

Rishi told IANS: "I am very proud that my son is trying to keep the flag of the Kapoor's flying. I always encourage him and want him to do better work."

Rishi wants Ranbir to be successful while being level headed.

"I want his head on his shoulders. I want him to be very realistic about the fact. Films is not just a joke, it's our family business and I am happy that he is serious about his career and his work," said Rishi.

Although Ranbir, 30, had a dull start with "Saawariya", but thanks to his choice of roles in "Wake Up Sid", "Raajneeti", "Rockstar" and "Barfi", the youngster has a carved a niche for himself in just six years.

"He is an actor who has taken a less travelled route. He is choosing different films and doing films that are not the staple diet of film heroes. For that I give him credit. The choice of his films are totally his, all creative decisions are his, I have no contribution to that at all. People feel I chose his films, but it's not so. I am just his father, not his manager," said Rishi.

Was Ranbir sure shot about becoming an actor?

"He knew his family business is such, so you are inclined to get into it, which is very natural. That must have influenced him. He wanted to go to a film school, so he went there and got trained as an actor. And god has been kind, he has given him some kind of strength to maintain his name," said Rishi, whose family has been a part of Indian filmdom for the past 85 years.

Ranbir, the great grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, represents the fourth generation of the Kapoors with cousins Karisma and Kareena.

Although his son was experimenting a lot in the beginning, but in his heydays, Rishi was stuck to romantic roles in "Bobby", "Khel Khel Mien" and "Karz".

He didn't get to experiment much during that time, but recently films like "Do Dooni Chaar" and "Agneepath" have given him a chance to make up for the lost opportunities.

"I have never got to play these kind of roles when I was younger. When you are young, you want to do romantic roles. Now I am playing all kinds of roles, which are very prominent to the subject and I am happy that they came my way. I love to experiment with different roles," said the 60-year-old who was tagged "cholcolate hero" and "lover boy" in his prime in the 1980s.

Although his father Raj Kapoor was an actor and director par excellence and established R.K. Films, but Rishi -- who burnt his fingers by going behind the camera for Akshaye Khanna andAishwarya Rai starrer "Aa Ab Laut Chalen" in 1999 -- has no plans to wear the director's hat.

"I am not planning to direct any film. I have so much work. God has been kind and I am happy with the work I am doing right now. I want to be focused," said the actor busy with "D-Day", and two more films to be directed under Yash Raj Films banner, "Kaanchi" and "Besharam".

In an interview, Rishi had said that when his first film "Bobby" came, his actor uncle Shashi Kapoor had arranged for a grand welcome for him at an airport. But the new trend of promotional activities are different and stressful, he says.

"Promotions these days are very stressful. I see my son doing it more than me. He is right now promoting his 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and I see him running around here and there - sometimes in London, sometimes in Dubai. It is very stressful," he said.

Ranbir, Anushka to romance in 50's style in 'Bombay Velvet'

Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma has been paired opposite each other in highly anticipated movie of Anurag Kashyap's 'Bombay Velvet' which is based on the backdrop of love, greed, violence and Jazz. The film will tell the story how Bombay became a metropolitan city. The film is inspired from historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables. Prakash has also worked on the script of the movie. The movie will go on floor in July 2013 and will release on December 25, 2014. In the movie, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma will play lovers of 1950.

The film will be produced by Fox Star Studios in association with Phantom Films. Anurag has been working on the script from a long time and he is happy that finally his dream project is ready to take off. Ranbir is working on his fitness as he will be playing a street fighter in the movie. He is undergoing training on martial arts and he suffered injury recently during the training session."I'm on a week-long break. But I have some time as the filming only starts in about two months. I hope my back heals soon so I can resume training quickly," said Ranbir in a recent interview.

"Bombay Velvet is my first film in a trilogy about Bombay, before it became a Metropolis. It's a story that has always fascinated me and we have been developing it for about four years, and I am very excited that now its fully ready and we begin shoot this year," Anurag Kashyap, who is currently at Cannes Film Festival, said in a statement.

Phantom Films' Vikas said Bombay Velvet was an "intricately researched and beautifully fictionalised" film.

"We are looking forward to working together with Fox Star to create a phenomenal cinematic experience of this story for the big screen," Bahl added.

Amit Trivedi is composing the music of the film, which will have a touch of the 60s.

Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, India said, "We are delighted to partner with Anurag on his next directorial venture Bombay Velvet. One of the best storytellers we have today, Anurag will bring alive Bombay in its original glory."
