Television actor Barun Sobti, who became a household name with Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? on Star Plus, is in Kolkata to take part in a two-day workshop for a Hindi feature film, to be directed by Mitali Ghoshal. She had recently made a documentary, The Warrior Prince, on cricketer Sourav Ganguly.
Barun Sobti Ghoshal's debut feature film is set against the backdrop of cricket. "It is a human story. I loved the film's script," says Barun. The working title of the film is 22 Yards. A few months ago, when he decided to quit the popular daily show, Star Plus had to wrap up owing to protests from fans. Ask him and he says, "I didn't quit the show for films. I decided to work in Mitali's film much later. I was having a crazy work schedule for four years, so I decided to take time off." Barun has decided not to work on two projects simultaneously. He has also worked in Main Aur Mr. Right.
That said, it doesn't mean Barun won't ever return to the small screen. "If I am offered something creative and if it doesn't demand crazy schedules, I will surely do it," he says. What does he think of the trend of television actors debuting in films? "It is a bold step, as it involves a lot of risk. But, at this moment, the scene is looking up. People are taking interest," he says.
Ghoshal's film will be shot in Kolkata, Mumbai and the UK. Eden Gardens and Maidan will feature in the film, produced by MS Productions. The shooting of the film starts April-end. Salim-Suleiman will compose the music. However, the female lead is yet to be finalised. "After watching Barun's show on television, I decided to offer him the film. We are looking for a fresh face opposite Barun. If budget permits, I can ask a few cricketers to appear as guests in my film," says Ghoshal, who worked as a sports journalist before coming to films.
