||Part 4||
Khushi and Arnav had the aamras handed to them and left towards the forest, walking hand-in-hand, with a companionable silence enveloping them. They sat under a tree and Khushi made a wall of creepers fall around them - creating a curtain between then and the world - with lots of fragrant flowers on them, and willed a few hundred light bugs to light their private tent. They played with their fingers as they leaned against each other, their soft laughter, the only sound being heard. They were just about to start talking about the lesson the teacher had taught them that evening, when they heard Akash yell for them.
"What is the matter?" Arnav lifted the creepers and stepped out, looking at a pensive Akash, the light from Arnav's talisman glowing in the dim light of the twilight. Khushi made their private setting disappear as she came to stand next to Arnav. "Bhai, Bhabhi." Akash bowed his head in respect, and Arnav repeated his question. Akash replied in a disturbed voice, "The sage has summoned you both." Arnav nodded, noting the disturbed state he was in. But before he could ask the reason behind Akash's disturbed mien, he heard Khushi ask the same in her stern, yet warm voice, "Is anything the matter, Akash?"
Akash seemed to relax when a soft breeze blew his way, no doubt Khushi's doing, and answered, "Early this morning, while I was performing Sandhyavandanam, instead of feeling the usual peace and calm, I felt terror grip me. I have been feeling restless since then." Khushi had felt and seen a few bad omens too, but had chosen to ignore them. Now that Akash mentioned the same too, she felt an uneasy feeling in her gut and started moving towards the ashram, Arnav next to her, and Akash behind them.
When they saw their teacher sitting on the steps leading into his cottage, they knew something was terribly wrong. His shoulders, which always stood in pride, was now stooped, and his eyes gave away the despair, which he tried to mask. "Guruji! What is the matter??" Arnav exclaimed, as he felt anger crash inside him, at whatever had brought his teacher to this state. "I have bad news, children. Two of them." he said, his voice devoid of the dignity that was always there.
"Sage Chaitanya is no more."
There were collective gasps from all around. The students there were mostly from Jnaana Kshetra, so they knew the importance of the great soul in their land. The disciples from other lands too, felt sad at such a loss. Khushi's eyes teared up at this, and she saw how Arnav stood in shock too. Somehow, they had never thought of the day when Jnaana Kshetra would be without its once- great ruler and the protector. "Wha. . . How??" Arnav murmured, and Sage Shaastradhaari's voice came in a cold, distant whisper, "He just left. His body was found. . . soulless, this noon."
Arnav gasped in utter shock. This was not possible. He would at least inform someone that he would be leaving soon. It was so unlike him to just leave! Or was he forced to leave?? Arnav thought, for he knew that many envied Sage Chaitanya's capacities and powers. He looked at his teacher and saw that his doubt was indeed the truth. The teacher nodded minutely, answering Arnav's question which he had not voiced out. "There is another bad news?" Khushi questioned.
At this, he looked at Khushi and said, "Your sister has been abducted." Khushi gasped, and had opened her mouth to press for more details when she felt a different type of terror spread through her. Her eyes started seeing things that were not physically in front of her. She stood in a dungeon. Damp, and cold, and scary. She saw her hands search along the walls and found another room. She entered and found that this room was slightly more habitable, she noted. There was light at the corner of the room, and she neared it automatically and turned to search around the room. 'Where am I??!!' she heard a voice in her mind, which Khushi was sure, did not belong to her. And suddenly there was a mirror on the wall which showed not Khushi's face, but Payal's.
'Jiji!!' Khushi shouted, and Payal's voice rang clearly in her head. 'Khushi?! Where are you?! What is happening here??!!'
'We'll think about all this later, Jiji! Just tell me if you are not harmed in anyway.'
'Oh, I am physically alright, Khushi. Though I do feel a little week. I had been unconscious all this while. But I had heard some people talking as I neared consciousness. "This is the wrong girl!" a voice had shouted. I do not know who it belonged to and what he meant.'
'Don't you worry, Jiji! I shall soon come and help you out of this!' Khushi was thinking when the. . . bond that had been the means of communication with her sister was blocked so forcefully and immediately and she opened her eyes. Gasping for air, she saw that Arnav had been trying to shake her awake for quite a time now. "Khushi! What happened?!"
"Jiji! I spoke to jiji! How could that possibly be?!" Khushi sputtered and heard the answer from Shaastradhaari, "The truest of blood bonds share a mental link too. Which most usually comes to form when someone is distressed."
Arnav and Khushi remained silent for a few seconds, grasping this, and Akash spoke to Khushi, "How is she, Bhabhi? Where is she?" "I could not make out the venue. It looked like a dungeon. But she is safe."
"What do you mean you could not make out the venue?? Did you see where she was?!" Akash pressed further, and Khushi mutely nodded. Khushi saw a flash of jealousy pass through Akash's eyes, which he covered up easily and said in a voice filled with steely determination, "We must get her back."
Arnav nodded in consent and looked into his brother's eyes, a reassuring look in his eyes for Akash, which Khushi did not understand, as he said, "We will get her back. . . ."
