IF SRGMP Forum Singing Contest –

The journey started in March this year when Abhilash came up with a fresh and unique idea of having a real singing contest in the virtual IF world. The idea was very well received, as the SRGMP section had many enthusiastic and talented singers. There were some initial apprehensions if the recording and uploading of the songs was too technical, but Abhilash provided a good step-by-step tutorial on the same, and that was a great learning for all. Very much influenced by the Challenge 2005 gharana concept, 3 gharanas were introduced in these contests as well – and highly respected trio of Sahana (Punjini), Appa (Apparaohoare) and Sunil (Surpremi) were appointed as the custodians or the mentors for the gharanas. After the initial auditions from the singers, 12 finalists were chosen and were divided into the gharanas as follows:

It was suggested that neutral judges be appointed to judge the different rounds so that personal friendships with the contestants or the mentors has not effect on the results. Thanks to Minnie and Anitha, as they graciously accepted to judge the contest in spite of their busy schedule.

With all the ground work done, the final contest started off successfully in the end of April. Each week, the contestants were given a theme (songs from a particular Music Director) and after being trained by the mentors, they would upload the songs within a given deadline. The songs would then be passed on to the judges and every week 2 contestants getting the minimum score from the judges would be eliminated. This is how the show progressed. The overall journey was a roller-coaster ride with some contestants falling sick sometimes not to meet the deadline to upload songs, mentors musical arguments and exchanges, enthusiastic support from the very vocal supporters, Dev team trying their best to accommodate requests for everyone's benefit and what not! The show had its own fun moments when even the Mentors, Dev team and supporters shared their songs with all. Overall, it has been one memorable experience for all!

As the show comes to an end for this season with Urmi selected as the deserving winner, its party time for all in the SRGMP section. The grand show would not have been possible without the wonderful participation of all the singers, mentors and the judges, the brilliant execution by the Dev team and the enthusiastic support from the audience. All are now looking forward to a better and bigger second season of the show!
