Prologue

Subhadra Rathore looked at the head, it was seperated from the body.Her husband ,Pratap Singh Rathore was beheaded.She looked at her elder son, Arvind Singh Rathore who was just 10 years old.Rajasthan was burning, the conflict between Thakurs and Jaats was on peak. Her 8 years old younger son Arjun screamed in fear.

Police arrested the killer, Dharamveer Gaur. He was not at all sorry. Pratap Singh Rathore made rape attempt on his pregnant wife,she stabbed herself with sword, leaving their 10 years old son Ramchand behind.So Dharamveer had to take revenge, he beheaded Pratap Rathore. Court gave him death sentence.

Later, he got pardon from the Government on request of Subhadra Rathore and he got life imprisonment. Subhadra Rathore took Ramchand in her shelter. Dharamveer died in jail after long time illness.

Disclaimer

This fiction is purely fictitious.It it is not meant to offend any caste, community, clan, race or religion.Though it is based upon the social maladies i.e. Caste system, Khaap Fatwas, Exploitation, Honour killing etc. The base of the story is the conflict between the Thakurs and Jaats of Rajpuatana in early 50s and 60s. But I don't mean to hurt any feelings either of Rajputs or Jaats.

Unfortunately, some social maladies are still dominant in various parts of India.I just tried to show how human life is affected because of these maladies. Though I always tried to touch the reality, but this is a work of pure fiction.

Part 1

3rd July,2009, Khem Karan Army Base, India

2000 hrs

"Lt. Col. Arnav Singh Rathore", said Brigadier Surjeet Singh Hundal.."will you please get some time to meet me later?"

"Sure Sir, I am just coming...10 minutes.."..Arnav said.

"Thank you.."..Hundal went to his cabin.

"Some tea?"..Hundal asked..

"No thank you Sir.."

"Some drink?"

"No thank you Sir.."

"Want to smoke?"

"No thank you Sir.."

"Spare me the pathetic monotone...have some smoke..possibly it will help..".

Hundal offered him a Dunhill...Arnav didn't refuse.

Hundal smiled, said ,"You know Rathore when a man becomes so angry?"

"When Sir?"

"When he is madly in love...they say being in love and not being love have one single thing in common..regret.So, what are you regretting for? For being in love or for not being in love?"

"I am not regretting Sir.."

"Interesting, you know Rathore, why men want to control women? It's not they are superior, they are just scared to admit their feelings, they think admitting would make them weak, but they all are bloody fools, trust me..losing your beloved only because of this fear is complete idiocy, everytime I see you and I think that what have you gained over the years? Few promotions..few medals, few more stars on your shoulder..and what you have lost that is much more...in fact enormous damage to your life."

"Sir, we are soldiers, if we will be like this then who will serve the country?"

"If you want to tell me that you are doing these things out of your patriotic feeling..then you will be disappointed to know that I will simply reject your argument... it happens ..in fact shit happens when a girl comes in your life..but more shit happens..when you let her go.."

"What about you Sir? You let her go?"

"Not at all, it was never an option for me and look at me , I smile everyday..and look at you..as far I know, last you smiled when you were receiving AVSM from Mr. APJ Abdul Kalam in 2006,your stern face is a topic of gossip among the other Unit members...and among their wives too..are you sure that you are doing justice to your life?"

Arnav became silent.."What do you want me to do Sir?"

" Go and get her.."

"There is nobody Sir..."

"Yes, there is...you are escaping from her, that is why from last five years you are taking voluntary postings in most of the forward areas in India..it's not your love for India, it's your escapist nature.Now you are even saluting a woman as your Supreme Commander, yet you are not giving entry to that special woman in your life..don't you think it is double standard?"

Hundal passed the glass full of neat whisky to Arnav, "Big boy, it's time to take your hand out of your ass and do something about your life..honestly speaking..."..Arnav took the glass and sipped.Hundal was totally determined to get the truth out of him. He met him in various Army Events from the beginning over the years again and again.First he met him in 2002, in Inter Command Polo Championship, handsome hunk with very expressive eyes, Captain Arnav Singh Rathore, again in 2003 and 2004 and in 2005.Then he came into notice for his brilliant performance during Tsunami, he was a brilliant leader in disaster management in Andaman, by the time he was a Major.His name was recommended to the President, and yes, he got it. Ati Vishishth Seva Medal.But, Hundal missed those bright eyes.He was smiling for the sake of the protocol, but his eyes told that his heart was bleeding badly. Hundal's wife, Mrs. Suprava Menon Hundal suggested Hundal to talk to Arnav, so that Jasjeet, Hundal's niece can get married to Arnav. Hundal simply rejected that proposition.This Rathore was very much unknown to Hundal, his eyes were expressionless, smile was fake and voice was monotonous.

In the year 2008, Arnav became Lieutenant Colonel by rank at the age of 30. This time Hundal had him in his Unit. From Col. Ranjeet Singh Nathawat , who was Arnav's distant relative, Hundal came to know about some facts.Those facts were quite disturbing.One name was there which was not uttered by Arnav so far, Khushi Kiran Gaur.

"Come on..speak out.."..Hundal insisted again.

"Sir, please..don't make me do that...please.."...

"Rathore..come on ..be a man..."..Hundal refilled his glass.

Arnav closed his eyes, it has been almost four years. As if it happened yesterday.

"It's a long story..."..Arnav said finally.."I am just giving the brief.."..

"Her name is Khushi Kiran Gaur, I met her several times, but , I only knew her name, I only knew how does she look..nothing more than that because I was not interested to know about her. My father, told me to marry her, it was around 2005. .."

"Continue..."

" I truly disliked her father, Ramchand Gaur, because he used to take undue favour from my father, monitorial favour of course, and my father helped him without any hesitation.When my father talked about my marriage to her, every drop of my blood boiled.I mean how far one can be shameless..I thought.I mean, Ramchand Gaur was uneducated, he couldn't even sign on a paper, but there were ways to earn livelihood, instead of begging to my father."

"Hmmm..then..?"

"Obviously I was not going to be the son-in-law of a beggar..I refused to marry her, when my father pressured me to the optimum level, I rebelled..I went to Ramchand Gaur's house, insulted her to the highest..."

"Why you insulted her?"

"Why shouldn't I?"

"Her class troubled you so much? You never tried her to know her beyond her class?"

"No..."

"And now..insulting her is troubling you so much, till now?"

Arnav became silent.After few minutes he said ,"What I said to her was unforgivable.."

"What..?"

"I called her bas***d.."

"What?"

" Yes, but that is true..she is not the real daughter of Ramchand Gaur, Ramchand's wife had illicit connection with some other man, Khushi is the result of that connection. Vaidehi Gaur..Vaidehi means Sita, wife of Lord Ram, what an irony, Vaidehi Gaur couldn't remain faithful to Ramchand. Payal, Ramchand Gaur's own daughter was 3 years old when Khushi was born. Vaidehi died when Khushi was 7 years old. But Ramchand did not throw Khushi out,, he kept her as his daughter."

"Why?"

"He loved his wife deeply, that is why he let Vaidehi give birth her illegitimate child.."

"How do you know all these?"

" Not so many people know this fact, I came to know from Ganraj Singh Solanki, a friend of my father..."

"How did he know..?"

"He is the biological father of Khushi, one fine evening, he confessed all..of course he was dead drunk..it was the death anniversary of Vaidehi Gaur.He felt guilty about her, he shouldn't have slept with a married woman..."

"Was she that beautiful?"

"When she died , I was 12, as far I remember, she was stunning, possibly my ancestors used to declare war to win these kind of women. Payal has mixed features of Ramchand and Vaidehi..she looks nice.."

"And Khushi Kiran Gaur?"

Arnav took a deep breath, said ,"I don't have that much vocabulary to describe her..."
