An example of change:

A Tamil Brahmin friend of my mother-in-law who lives in a place far from their native had trouble with one of his son's marriage. As they live far from their native place at a distance of around 18 hours traveling, his relatives were unwilling to get their daughter married to his son.

He is the main priest of a big temple. He asked my MIL to speak to our neighbor who is a Kannada speaking Brahmin for marriage proposal. For practical reasons, he just wanted a Brahmin girl for his son and he is okay with other differences.

vishnu you're talking about Atiraatra and Somayaaga. But not that they are conducted only in a gap of 12 years. These two are considered as the supreme most among all yagjna-yaagas described in vedas. No other parts of india are doing any of them for around last 1700 years. Its because the Vaidika Tradition that once spreaded all over India got confined only to Kerala, after the fall of Jaina & Buddha religions followed by raising of Aagama tradition. Also you're right, the Yajamaana of these two must be married. Without his wife, its incomplete. She has a major role of participation in both.

Naina, wonderful reply.

another thing I would like to add. I've learnt about a female physician of Vedic times, by name Saraswati (mostly not the goddess of wisdom) who also owned own Gurukula to teach system of Medicine. Another queen (I forgot her name) who fought Asuras (may be her enemies) and lost one arm, which had been replaced by Indra, the physician. So its clear, in Vedic times, ladies enjoyed equal status.

umdu ji so sorry for spamming your thread.

Thank you Vishnu, Bharati mmanju and misscooleyes for all your encouragement . I totally agree with you changes are happening but regression in the form of Khap Panchayats in Haryana, Rajasthan and UP where they release statements like if girls are getting raped get them married early or girls should not have mobile phones as this encourages them to elope or honour killings is also happening and they without a single women representative issue dikaits which have to be followed by all and those who oppose are boycotted by the entire village. Changes have definitely happened in cities but half of the country still lives in villages. There change is still slow and gradual. Our politicians are unwilling to fight the khaps who guarantee them votes by a particular caste enbloc, so they are indifferent to this social malaise. The Khaps have become extra constitutional authorities .Unless this is tackled it is like taking one step forward and two steps backward.

Excellent post UMDU, very much informative, I got to knew many things from your post. You are an orchard of knowledge.

I only somewhat knew about the sati system and it was originally meant for Rajput princess who used to sacrifice themselves when their husbands are either killed or taken in as prisoners so as to escape being abused by the invaders. It got twisted in Bengal and many women bore the burnt of it due to some greed of the Brahmin class.

Regarding dowry, you enlightened me about the aspect that it was originally used for giving women their share of inheritance, but sadly it has been badly twisted and now many families are exploited for dowry.

Other points were quite informative and enlightening, kudos for such a post 👏

Agree to each and every point you made. I remember two very particular female names here-

Gargi Vachknavi and Maitreyi --These are the two female philosophers of very early times and participated in all kind of philosophic talks and debates.I would highly suggest everyone to google these two names and read about them.

Somewhere down the line, ideas got messed up.And the situation of women became what it is right now.As you've mentioned ,the current situation is a result of a series of misinterpretations of earlier literature.

There are some rituals that are followed and have highly significant scientific meanings-There are particular scientific reasons why a name of god must be chanted for a certain number of times using a mala, why it is important for women to wear bindi's and ear-rings,why earlier male brahmins had just a short lenght of hair just at the centre of head and no hair anywhere else(the latter two are associated with strengthining the nerves on forehead, near ear-lobes and at the centre of the head which make nerves in those regions very active). And there are few things which bore meaning at certain point of time but not any longer. Like Men cutting the coconut.Earlier, without much help or right kind of technique, women were considered physically less strong to indulge into activities like these and men usually performed them to help the women. This act has been highly misinterpreted and it is now a rule that during poojas and other occasions, men have to compulsorily break the coconut and not women.

In today's episodes, both Brahmins as well as Bhabo and Meena and others represented the generation of people who never bothered to think what knowledge was being passed onto them was right or wrong. They have digested and learnt any information that was passed onto them.Sandhya on the other hand represents the section who think before blindly following anything that is being said. There is one important thing to notice here.Even Sandhya who personally would never believe in these rituals follows them and sticks to the rules just because Bhabo asks her to.Even while talking to Brahmins ,she talks from a distance just to respect the thoughts of Bhabo and Brahmins. That is a very grave reality.Even those who dont want to believe and practice these rituals blindly are forced to do them just to keep in peace with the older members of the family and respect their thoughts. It's only when Sandhya manages to permanently change Bhabos idea will she also be free to not follow wrong things.

EDIT--My timings doesn't suit me to read all the comments that have been made till now,I just read the first post and typed down what I felt.I am sorry if I have re-written anything that has been already posted

Naina you have not re-written but added more information in your post and I will definitely look up Gargi Vachnavi and Maitreyi on google.

@bold - You are right and in the past also there may have been people like Arvind Kothari and Sandhya who were free thinkers and questioned everything but they did not have much support around them in the society. In Sandhya's case she has the support of her husband besides from the society there are more people who think like her as well in these modern times.

But you are so right that it takes a long time to bring a good thinking change in the society and if it is brought then it may not take long to again change it back to suit the stronger or the more powerful. Just like the rulers/administrators/politicians of a country... who come to power and change policies for good or bad.
