Okay, this is not a discussion on whether a baby track should or should not be played out...that is a decision that the makers will have to take...am sure they will take the right decision based on a whole lot of factors that they alone can fathom...

I just thought it would be interesting to have a discussion on the kind of challenges that we have had to deal with when faced with the career vs motherhood conflcit...there are a number of women who are mothers out here...and why leave the men out...maybe there are a few who are fathers...and who can share their wives' stories with us...at some point in time, when the makers decide to take on this issue, they might have a lot of real life stories to base their track on...

Let me share with you one of my challenges...

I went back to do my masters when my son was two years old and my daugther about ten months. My mother was working as a professor in a college...my son was going to pre-school then but there was no one to leave my daughter with...my in-laws were not able to help...we had a maid for my daughter however...my daughter and the maid would accompany my mother to her college everyday...since she was the HOD, she had a room to herself...so my baby used to sleep atop my mom's table when she needed to sleep...when she was awake of course, everyone of my mother's colleagues used to take turns in caring for her...the maid actually had nothing to do...my mother's principal was very supportive too and permitted my mother to do this...my mother's students also used to take turns to carry the baby around, feed her etc whenever they had a free hour...after my classes, I used to go and pick up my daughter and mom from college and we would return home together...my entire first year of PG was completed this way,...in the second year, my daughter also started going to pre-nursery...but I must say, my mom's colleauges missed her a hell of a lot in college!

Career of a woman suffers definitely with the motherhood ,how much ever supporting system one has... The emotional and physical stress leads a woman to make several sacrifices... one cannot stay late.. take leave quite often when the child is sick... many times no escape from the household work... It is very stressful to have all the male colleague's (sometimes inferior ones too) comments for the disability to stay back and do the work and often women are not assigned with important tasks...

I had taken a break because I was not well after the first child birth and immediately after the second child's birth...and... Though, I regained confidence within two years ,I did not join and opted for being stay-at-home mother as I had noticed, my son has an extraordinary ability in maths and I liked to hone his skills and monitor him personally to give him correct environment and exposure...

Almost after 10 years I have joined back in the work, and was the junior most...had to slog twice than a colleague who is ten years younger than me... I completed Post graduation from IITB with a rank exactly after 20 years... Though I have guided and mentored several research based projects... I am almost 20 years behind my once upon classmates... In my field of work, the degrees we achieve, the funded projects we attract are the mile stones than today my son standing on the top of the hill... I might have achieved something great being a mom...but surely lost my career ...
