This morning we had a fierce debate in class on the subject of love stories and self-loathing (in the context of Neruda's poetry). A point that came up is, when a person does not love themselves, how can they truly love other people? If I hate myself, but if I tell somebody I love them, what does it even mean? The debate (like most debates in our classroom remained unresolved ' the Mallu boys in one team, the Bong chicks on the other team and the rest of us of the what-the-eff-was-that in the third team).

Anyway, so I thought, Khushi's problems come from this fact ' she doesn't love or respect herself enough. That explains the lies. That explains why she is a doormat at times. That explains why she always puts others feelings first. It is not so much about being selfless; it is just that she somehow needs validation of her existence from others. On occasion she comes across as feisty, but sadly, that is more of an aberration than the norm. I can understand why she is so. She has always lived on the crumbs of others and most of who you are as an adult is shaped by how you get treated as a child. I know the fact that Arnav had an unhappy childhood is something that they allude to all the time and is meant us to understand why he is a "ukdha hua papad ka tukda", but I think Khushi is pretty damaged too. We may never get to understand that facet though, unless Gul Khanji decides to.

The other day my sister made an interesting analogy and I am going to just steal it from her. She likened Gul Khan to Arjuna (the Pandava), whose eye is solely on the eye of the bird (the honey-coloured brown eyes of a bird), which is why she will never see the rest of the bird, the tree that the bird is sitting on and the sky above it. And while I love brown eyes, I am just endlessly annoyed because I never get to see the complete picture.

I am going to reserve judgement on Anjali Di. Her volte-face was rather startling and like all things in IPK-land not explained well enough. I understand that she is like Khushi too, in the sense that she needs validation from others. Which is why her brother saying I married that chick for YOU and I love YOU left her pleased as punch. Bah! I guess, I dislike the actor and the character both, so it is tough to not be judgemental about her. But I am trying not to be. Trying being the operative word :P

Anyway I am recommending both these lovely girls to watch Jab We Met and memorize Kareena Kapoor's line ' main apni favourite hoon! I think everyone should remember that, it is just the right mix of whimsy without being overtly self-indulgent.
