Chapter 3
Her morning had been a double disaster after being a spectatorof the horrifying sight in front of her.
First of all, her sister had been getting on her nerves lately. Last night when she arrived, she was immediately was showered with a rain of questions and a fierce scolding. Thank god she wasn't in her senses last night otherwise she didn't know what she would've actually done. And then again in the morning, she yelled at her again just to make sure the harsh comments had travelled through her ears piercing her heart. Khushi figured she wanted to scold her again because last night she wasn't sure if beneath all that alcohol if her words were actually affecting her or not.
And now this.
Could her life get any worse? Actually.. weirder.
She had arrived at work pretty late because of her harsh morning. Because of her sister, she had missed the bus and then she had to wait in the taxi line for almost an hour. She knew her boss was going to get really mad considering this was the umpteenth number of times she was late.
But little did she know she was going to receive a bigger shock.
Finally after receiving a taxi, she told the cab driver the address rapidly settling down in the backseat and the driver took off with a jerk once he heard the words, "Step on it."
The biggest mistake of her life was to think that her bad luck was over. Stuck in traffic for another hour because of some stupid celebrity, she swore at herself again.
She got out of the cab in a hurry and unfortunately, spilled the coffee in her hand all over her dress.
"f**k!" she swore loudly.
She suddenly wished she had saved that word so she could overuse it right now.
Her mouth dropped in shock as she saw the two lovebirds, which she hadn't expected them to be, striding towards her with smiles on their faces, hands in hands.
"Khushi!" Alisha called.
He turned his head towards her too as she called her name out. He immediately noticed the expression on her face and couldn't help letting out a silent chuckle. Alisha let go of his hand and rushed towards Khushi and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Khushi! What happened?" Alisha asked in worry.
What the-
All Khushi could do was stare at Alisha absentmindedly with her eyes wide and her mouth still open gaping.
He walked over and closed her mouth and said, "Khushi, what's this on your dress?"
"C-Coffee" she managed to say.
"Aww.. you poor girl! Looks like you just arrived. Go and get yourself cleaned up," Alisha said with a benign smile.
With that said, she left towards her cabin waving bye to him with flirty fingers.
The minute she left, Khushi turned towards him and blurted, "What the hell!"
"What happened?" he replied confused.
"I don't know! That's what I'm asking! How- What-" she struggled, trying to speak.
"Oh that," he said suddenly realizing what she was trying to ask. He scratched his temple and said, "Well, me and Alisha are dating."
"Shoot. Me. Right. Now," she said with a dead stare.
"Well its true!" He replied excitedly.
She felt like she was just shot in head at his tone of speaking.
"Alisha is not anything like I expected! She really is an intriguing and amazing person," he said with a twinkle in his eye.
Khushi was extremely confused.
Arnav- and Alisha? No- she just wasn't ready to accept it. Arnav hated her guts and now he was acting like a idiot who has fallen in love.
Love..oh gosh please.
She shook her head in denial and raised her hands surrendering. "Okay Arnav, you got me. I totally fell for your joke and now you can tease me all you want."
Arnav shook his head in despair and said, "Khushi this isn't a joke! I really like Alisha's personality and her ideals of life."
"Are you kidding me? Arnav how am I supposed to believe you when just yesterday you were asking me advice to get rid of her!" she replied with shock.
"Khushi look your overreacting," he held her by the shoulders gently.
She let out a sigh and settled herself in the nearest chair and buried her face into her palms.
"Khushi? Are you okay?" he knelt next to her and queried in worry.
She lifted her face from her palms, letting out one more sigh and stood up, striding towards her desk.
"Khushi!" he stood up and followed her.
His gaze followed her as she turned on her computer and took out all of her accessories.
Once more he asked, "Are you okay?"
She turned around in her chair and flashed a smile saying, "Of course I am, why would you think that?"
"Well the way you were acting-"
"Don't worry Arnav I'm fine. Just took a little while for the news to kick in," she replied with a wink.
Phew. He let out a sigh of relief. He really thought something was wrong with her.
He settled into his chair which was right behind her and asked, "So you're okay with me dating Alisha?"
"Of course I am! Why would you even ask me that? And anyways, it's not like I have any right to make the decisions in your life right?"
"Of course you do!" he exclaimed. "We've been best friends since we were kids, Khushi. I really care about you."
"Well that's nice to here," she said with a smile arranging a file of papers.
Still unsatisfied with her answer, he turned around and began filing those taxes. In between he would turn around to check on her and all he saw was the girl engrossed in her work. He remembered how every two seconds she used blurt out something random or have a conversation with him. But today, she was acting as if he was a complete stranger to her.
***
"Let's go," she said in a monotone.
"Where?" he asked.
She rolled her eyes and said, "To your apartment, where we always go."
He ran his fingers through his hair and wondered how to break it to her.
"What happened?" she asked sensing his uneasiness.
"Actually, I was going to go to Alisha's house for dinner tonight," he said hesitantly.
"Oh'" she let out.
"But it's okay! I can tell her to cancel and I'll go to her house some other day," he said with a happy tone.
"No, it's okay. You go to her house. I'll feel really guilty if you guys cancelled your date because of me," she said with a smile.
"Thanks for understanding," he replied with a heartwarming.
She nodded benignly and turned around to leave striding down the corridor.
***
She came out of the shower drying her hair with her towel when she heard her cellphone ring. She instantly knew it was Arnav and without even looking at the screen, she picked it up to only find a girl voice on the other end.
"Hello?" Khushi heard.
"Lavanya?" Khushi replied.
"Yeah it's me. Why are you so shocked?"
"Oh nothing."
"So what are you up to?"
"Nothing much, Arnav ditched me and now I'm alone with nothing to do."
"Aww.. what happened?"
"He's gone over to our boss' house for dinner."
"Why? Wait are they-"
"Yeah they're dating. I seriously can't believe it but whatever," Khushi sighed.
"You want to come over?" Lavanya offered.
"No its okay. It's actually good I have some time to myself. It'll give me time to practice."
Khushi could feel Lavanya smiling on the other end.
"Sure. Bye!"
"Bye!"
And with that said, Khushi took a deep breath in and slowly let it out.
She strode towards her closet and opened it her eyes darting towards the corner of the top shelf. There it was sitting, untouched. It was unfair that it wasn't played for so many years and only caught dust sitting up there. She remembered when her father passed on that lovely instrument the day before he passed away. The sweet loving sound her father used to create with his fingers against the strings were absolutely magical. She remembered when she was a little girl, she could listen to him play all day and night. But now it was her turn. She had taken lessons a few years ago but she doubted she could play as wonderfully as him. She knew that no one would be able to match the melodious music he used to create.
Standing on her tip toes, she pulled the case down and settled it on her bed. She clicked open the side locks and lifted the cover. She coughed as she lifted the case because of the dust that puffed out.
It was still there.
She could smell the faint smell of her father's cologne from the case. It transferred her to heaven immediately flooding her mind with his thoughts. She lifted the beautifully crafted guitar from the case and placed it into her arms in the right position. Struggling a little with the position, she instantly knew that this guitar only had the right of being placed in her father's talented hands.
She picked up the chip, and stroked it against the strings creating a tune delightful to the ear. Amazed with the capability she still had, she closed her eyes and stroked the strings again, playing her favorite song, swallowed into her own world.
***
She lay on the bed waiting for him to arrive when she heard his phone ring. She saw the screen flash with Khushi's name and groaned in disgust.
Why can't this girl just go die somewhere!
She picked up the phone and sweetly greeted her.
"Hello!"
"Umm.. Hello who is this?" Alisha heard.
"This is Alisha."
"Oh hey boss.." she greeted awkwardly. "Where is Arnav?"
"Arnav right here next to me," she lied.
Horrified, Khushi asked, "Can you please pass on the phone to him?"
"Umm.. sorry sweety he's actually sleeping right now."
Before Alisha could say anything else, the loud beep if the dial tone pierced her ear and put the phone back where it was.
"Hey," Arnav said striding towards the dining table drying his hands with a towel. "Who was that?" he pointed towards the phone.
"Oh' I don't know. I picked it up but I got no response. Blank call," she lied as honestly as she could.
"Hmm.." he nodded and settled back on his chair.
***
Immediately after cutting the call, she threw her phone all the way across the room until it hit the window, shattering the glass all over the place.
How dare she- how dare he? He slept with her? What is wrong with him?
She knew him very well and he would never sleep with anyone who he hasn't been dating for a long time. And even if he did, he always talked it through with her first. Both were never shy to share anything but now- He had completely changed.
