Chapter 3
She was sitting on the couch leaning against his chest while he aimlessly stroked the soft skin on her arm. He had his arm around her neck and his legs stretched out on the coffee table in front of him. Much to his boredom, they were watching a show she religiously followed – Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon.
She had followed him for days after that night…running behind him all day long apologizing and begging for one chance. He had finally given in seeing her persistence. She had been really disheartened by his behavior, and her tears had finally managed to melt him. He had known he was taking it too seriously, that it was only a joke, but even he couldn't control the agitation he had felt after that. Why? Even he didn't know…
A smile formed on her lips as she saw the marriage preparations going on in the show. Like any other girl, she had dreams and wishes…about her beloved, about her marriage, about her future.
"Marriages are such fun times, right? I mean, just look at them. They look so happy to be tying the knot." She chose her words cautiously so as not to irk him again.
"They are happy now, because they are not married just yet. Then of course honeymoon comes, it's vacation time. Everyone is happy and cheerful. Real test begins after that. And we both know what happens after that." There was no emotion in his tone. Neither anger, nor disappointed.
She straightened up from leaning against him and turned to him. "Not all marriages end up in the courtroom, and you know that very well. Just because you have seen a few cases around you doesn't mean the whole world goes through it." She sounded as calm as she could. She knew she was hitting a hard wall, but it was worth a try.
"Seeing my parents separate in front of my eyes was experience enough for me to make that opinion of marriages, add to that my brother-in-law who cheated on my sister." He said in a slightly raised and irritated voice and then gestured to the television. "What you are seeing here is no different. One guy is cheating on his wife. The other one threatens and forces the girl to marry him. I mean the whole marriage institution is bull."
"Arnav, this is drama. What else do you expect in drama? How can you say our marriage won't work out to see a happy ending?" She said it too soon without thinking through and she realized it only when she saw him get up from the couch.
Panic was just around the corner for her. She knew she had gone too far and what she was trying to accomplish was a distant dream. Yet, she had done damage.
He paced the length of the room while her eyes roamed followed him in fear. And then something very much expected happened, he yelled. "We have gone through this even before we started dating. I do not believe in marriages and I will not marry you. I am not sure what makes you think you will convince me otherwise. You knew what you were getting into. So why this? Why now?"
"You should have thought about it before you slept with me. What did you think; you will sleep with me and then leave me?"
"Who said I'm leaving you? We can still love each other. It's just that marriage is not on the cards for me. Not now, not ever!"
"I can't do this, Arnav. I can't keep loving you without the hope of a better future. I want much more than just love. I want a companion, I want a partner, I want kids, I want a family Arnav. I want a family."
He looked at her as if she had asked him to chop his head off. He looked at her in disbelief for several moments while she kept waiting for an answer.
"If you can't do this, then don't."
She couldn't believe what she had just heard. How could he be so heartless? His stubbornness was much important to him than her. She should have realized long back she would never be able to change his mind. She was hoped for a lost cause. He was a lost cause.
Tears started to moisten her eyes and before her eyes filled completely, she picked up her purse and left his house.
Days passed and they didn't see each other. No calls, no texts, no emails either. He had been sad about what had happened but he was too proud to go after her. She did not go after him either...
Until…
