IN THE HOSPITAL:

As soon as the Viren and Jeevika rush in with Manvi, as promised, Dr Bansali, the Vadhera family doctor, and his team are waiting. Manvi is quickly wheeled into the ICU, Jeevika and Viren are stopped outside. Jeevika watches her sister, her tears not stopping. Viren puts an arm around her and gives her a little squeeze. "Sab thik ho jaayega." He whispers. He doesn't dare say more, for even he is unsure of her fate today. He looks at Jeevika, who stares through the small glass window at her baby sister. He sighs, not knowing how to make her feel better. Finally, he decides to go call Virat. He knew Virat would want to know where Manvi was.

"Jeevika, main Virat ko phone karke aatha hoon. Tum yahin rukna." He says quietly after a while. Jeevika doesn't respond, but Viren doesn't push. Slowly, he walks away from her, reaching for his phone.

Jeevika meanwhile looks on. Inside, the doctors and nurses are busy connecting Manvi to all sorts of machines and pipes. She remembers how terrified Manvi is of injections.

"Di! Di, injection nahi! Di!" Manvi had screamed when they were at the doctor's. Manvi had been just 12 years old that time. She had been sick for 4 days with high fever. Both Jeevika and Beeji had gone crazy with worry. Finally, they had brought her to the doctor to get her checked and the doctor had said that an injection was necessary. She had protested, cried and even tried to escape, but beeji had made her get the injection. Even though the entire process took less than a minute, Manvi had grasped Jeevika's hand so tightly, she had a purple bruise on her hand that lasted for days. After the injection, Manvi still didn't let go of Jeevika. Quietly, she had turned to her and said, "Thank you, Di. Aap nahi hoti toh..."

Jeevika clenches her fists. Oh, what wouldn't she give to walk in there right now for Mannu to hold her hand? What wouldn't she give to get that purple bruise again? She cringes as one of the nurses take Manvi's hand and jabs a needle in. Instinctively, Jeevika's hand reaches out, wanting to rub her aching hand. Although she knew Manvi probably didn't feel a thing, Jeevika could feel the pain in her arm. That's how it had always been. If Manvi got injured, Jeevika felt the pain. Every time Manvi had cried, all Jeevika wished was for all the pain to come to her instead, so her Mannu would never have to endure it. She looks down at her hands, her mind backtracking.

Manvi had just come home from school. When she entered, Jeevika noticed red stains on her skirt. She ran towards her, worried. "Mannu?!" she quickly lifted her skirt to see a deep gash on Manvi's knee. Manvi didn't say anything. Immediately, Jeevika called beeji to clean the wound and put a bandage. Jeevika had never seen Manvi so injured before. Watching blood ooze out of Manvi's leg, her eyes welled up and she began to cry. Manvi looked at Jeevika, confused. She hadn't felt like crying at all. It wasn't even hurting that much, then why was her di crying? she wondered. Innocently, she asked, "Di? Aap kyon ro rahi ho? Chot to mujhe lagi hai."

With teary eyes, Jeevika looked up and answered, "Haan. Par dard to mujhe ho raha hai na."

That had been the first time Manvi had been injured. There were countless times after that, and there wasn't a single time when Jeevika hadn't shed tears and felt her pain. But at those times, she had been able to take it away. She had been there, with her sister, by her side. But today, this door, this stupid door had become an unsurpassable barrier that stopped her from running to her sister to protect her.

It hurt every part of her to know that she couldn't do anything. She watches on helplessly as the doctor works on Manvi. Manvi is still throughout. She doesn't move a muscle. This unnerves Jeevika. Her sister had never been so still and quiet before. Even in her sleep, she would mumble, move, sometimes even kick and punch. But today, today she was so still. So quiet. So unlike her little baby girl.

Jeevika remembers how Manvi used to run all around the house, never able to sit still for a second. "Mannu! Chup chap baith idhar!" Jeevika had scolded her once. Today, she felt like screaming, "Mannu! Jor jor se chilla!" All the times she had been annoyed with her noisiness and hyperactivity, she had failed to see how the absence of all that would leave her so cold inside. That was who Manvi was. It was what defined her sister. Right now, she would give anything to run around to catch her sister.

"Mannu, please uth ja..kabhi tujhe baith kar chup rahne ke liye nahi kahungi..." she whispers, leaning against the door for support, her legs unable to take the weight anymore. She slowly feels herself sinking as her legs give in to tiredness.

Then, Viren's arms are around her, pulling her up, supporting her, in more ways than one. Gently, he lifts her and half-carries her to a chair nearby. She looks at him as he settles down beside her, his fingers wrapped around her hand.

Viren. She hadn't even met him before that day in Hrishikesh. Blindly, she had agreed to marry him, stepping into the unknown. So many things could have gone wrong, but everything, everything went right. Viren was the perfect example of a perfect husband. He supported not only her, but her family as well. He was her pillar of strength. Slowly, she places her head on his shoulder. Viren cups her cheek in his hand.

"Manvi ke saath yeh kya ho raha hai? Kyun ho raha hai?" she asks after a while. He goes still, not knowing how to answer. He doesn't know what to say. He drops his hand to his sides. Jeevika stiffens and straightens, noticing his sudden change in behaviour.

"Viren ji?" her voice quivers. He looks at her, but doesn't meet her eye.

"Viren Ji?" Jeevika says again, her voice louder. Viren doesn't say anything. Another thought hits Jeevika.

Viren had been acting strange from the last few days. She had felt something was wrong, but she couldn't put her finger on it. Viren had been filled with rage against Manvi one day, and everything had just disappeared the next. Manvi had been hiding something from her, something big, about why she hadn't donated blood. She had tried to get it out of her, but Manvi had been so stubborn, that she just had to let it go after a while. Bow down, like she always did. In all that, she had forgotten about Viren's reaction to the situation. She looks at Viren again who is still avoiding her eyes. She had felt something was wrong when Viren had gone to bed all of a sudden that night. She just hadn't given it much thought. Or she hadn't had a chance to. Until now.

Jeevika turns towards Viren. "Viren ji. Baath kya hai? Kya chupa rahein hain aap mujhse? Jhooth mat boliye, please."

Viren doesn't say anything. Just then, another realisation dawns on her. What if...what if that truth had something to do with what had happened to Manvi? Jeevika panics. She grabs Viren's face and turns it towards her. "Viren Ji, please. Please mujhe bataaye baat kya hai!" she begs.

Viren looks into her frightened eyes. If he didn't tell the truth now, Jeevika would never trust him. But how could he just tell her like that? Jeevika's pleading eyes finally break him.

Viren leans forward and wraps his hands around Jeevika. Placing his chin on her shoulder, he takes a deep breath, determined to tell her the truth.
